Father of American terrorist suing US government

The families of three Americans killed in US drone strikes in Yemen are suing the government, arguing that it had no right to assassinate them without a trial. The wrongful-death suit was filed yesterday by Nasser al-Awlaki, father of Anwar al-Awlaki, and Sarah Khan, mother of Samir Khan, the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18896232) reports. Awlaki and Khan were killed (http://www.newser.com/story/129887/yemen-al-qaeda-preacher-anwar-al-alwaki-killed-in-airstrike.html) in the same September drone strike (http://www.newser.com/story/129910/another-american-killed-in-strike-on-anwar-al-awlaki.html); Awlaki's 16-year-old son Abdulrahman was killed in another in October. The suit names as defendants Leon Panetta, David Petraeus, and other top military officials.
"There is something terribly wrong when a 16-year-old American boy can be killed by his own government without any accountability or explanation," said a lawyer for the Center for Constitutional Rights, which along with the ACLU is backing the suit. Eric Holder has previously argued (http://www.newser.com/story/141126/holder-defends-the-right-to-kill-americans.html) that the US is allowed to use lethal force against wartime foes, even if they're American. But the suit argues that the killings happened far from any defined battlefield—and hence violate international law as well, the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444097904577535321940484032.html?g rcc=21c760846404b009779e9cc1c1eaf7b3Z3ZhpgeZ0Z628Z 200Z98Z2&mod=WSJ_hps_sections_news&grcc2=10138948901ea628284f74814ce5b078~13426668193 90~18f3b45caef80572d421f68a979bd6dc~cmiller117~134 2666542735~3~2~0~0~0~628~200~98~0~2~) reports.

Says it all right there doesn't it?

I think you're looking at this in the wrong light. If Obama is forced to take the pro 'killing Americans with bombs is okay' stance just before elections, that could have a marginal effect in voter decision/turnout.

Part of me says we should Send them a bill for the munitions expended.

Now, on the flip side of the coin, the American government has no right to deprive any american citizens abroad of life, liberty, or the persuit of happiness, without due process of law. Sure he was a bad guy. Bring him to justice, prove it, then put him away or kill him.

if you side with the enemy then you should be treated as such.

This. You forfeit your right as an American citizen when you commit treason- they probably handled this wrong and should have revoked any right to American citizenship prior to execution of these strikes, but regardless, once you turn on your own country you are doomed.

I agree, but the burden is on the government to prove it, then punish for it. You can't just willy nilly kill people who say they don't like the america or it's governmnet. Otherwise the government has justification to kill half the people on this board just for things we've posted.

Apparently these guys deserved a hellfire up the ass...

That being said ..

You can't go around offing American Citizens all willy nllly.

BUT

Were these guys the main target of the attack or they just happened to be with a bad guy that "just needed killin" ? If these "americans" were collateral damage. I don't feel bad. Don't be hanging out with terrorists and you won't catch a hellfire up the ass.
