I didn't write this, but I love it.
I think I'm going to rant for a bit. Its gonna be good.
Blah blah blah thoughts and prayers. Insert compasionate statement here. I'm such a good person. Everyone click "like". Move on to the next thing the TV tells me to be concerned about.
It turns out horrible things happen every day. People are inherently evil. It...'s a big scary world out there full of bad stuff and sharp corners. Get used to it. Carrying a gun isn't going to save you from your own stupidity and irresponsibility. Today a man in full tactical gear carrying an assault rifle walked into a movie theater and unloaded on the audience. Their first instinct? It must be part of the show. Seriously.
We as a people are losing our survival instinct and I'm not only talking about these freak incidences like earlier today. How many of you even keep jumper cables in your car? Batteries going dead is a pretty common occurrence isn't it? But instead of owning a 5 dollar pair of jumper cables the majority of people in this world literally choose to be helpless. Do you have a flashlight and candles for when the power goes out? How about a couple gallons of water for when the water main breaks? Here's an important one. Do you have the capability to defend yourself if your life is threatened?
You will hear a lot of my shooting buddies use the phrase "for when the zombies come". Nobody actually believes zombies will come, it's just easier to smile and say zombies rather than "Just in case I'm attacked in broad daylight by a naked man who eats my face and leaves me horribly scarred for the rest of my life." I'm not encouraging everyone to start carrying guns because honestly I think I know maybe one person who is actually proficient enough with a handgun to protect himself or those around him if the need arose. You might think to yourself " I can put a full magazine into a 5" group at 25 yards at the range, I am competent with a handgun." Well can you draw your gun from your holster and accurately place a shot while somebody is in the middle of stabbing you? Or would you grab for your gun and accidentally shoot your own leg or some other innocent bystander. Theres a good chance you would pull your gun and just point it assuming that simply having a gun will solve your problems. It won't. If you flinch or hesitate then some hardened criminal is just going to take your gun away from you and shoot you with it. GAME OVER please insert coins to continue.
Do you own a gun or intend to purchase a gun for the purpose of personal protection? If so were will you keep it? Do you keep it loaded? Are you going to carry it on you? Do you carry it every day? If not, how do you decide when you need the ability to protect yourself? "We are just going to the movies, I doubt anyone will try to kill everyone there. I don't need my gun today." If you have a CCW then it is not any different from sitting next to the emergency exit on an airplane. ARE YOU CAPABLE OF PROTECTING YOURSELF AND OTHERS IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. If you don't think so then you have no business carrying a gun. Leave your security blanket at home, unloaded, in the gun safe, so you can't hurt yourself. Go play gangster at the shooting range every other month or so and put the pictures on Facebook so everyone knows not to fuck with you. "I feel sorry for the guy who blah blah blah at my house cuz I got a whole buncha really cool big guns." How many of your big cool super neat guns can you effectively use all at once? Since I used the word EFFECTIVELY then its probably none. Especially since most people don't keep their guns loaded or they keep them locked up for "safety". Try calling TIME OUT while your being raped. You need at least a two minutes to get your gun out of it's case in the closet and load it. Now it's GAME ON and that bad guy is gonna get what's coming to him for sure.
Try not to get too comfortable in your little dream bubble because some day a guy with a sniper rifle might pop it and your first instinct will be to yell for help. There's no shame in it. It's how society has shaped you. No matter what it is, someone will come along and fix the problem for you. A policeman will protect you, a firefighter will save you, an EMT will fix you. The power company will keep the lights on. Water will always come out of the tap. And most importantly, bad things only happen to other people. Don't worry because my thoughts and prayers are with them.
