View Full Version : MODS: Curious about a few stats for today (7/20)

I'm curious, since I have never seen so many "Currently Active Users" here before today:

Was there was a big spike in new "members" today?
Did a significant number of these new members behave "normally" (post in the New Members Sign In thread, etc.)?
Were there more "inflammatory" posts removed by the MODS than normal?
Were there a lot of complaints or inquiries from these new members about why they couldn't access the Trading Post?

I can just imagine a ton of liberal journalists or activists (same thing) trying to infiltrate the site and maybe even stir things up a little with inflammatory posts. I haven't seen many stupid posts, so that's good. But maybe they got excised quickly and I never saw them.

I can also imagine these same a-holes trying to get into the TP to copy and paste the "evil black guns" that are listed there in their slanted and misguided "reports" on the "out of control gun culture of Colorado".

If you can share any info, great. If not, understood. Keep up the great work with the forum! [Beer]

I'll keep it simple.

Today was an insanely busy day for every member of the staff. We appreciate your thanks and accolades and ask for your patience and understanding on other things that may have been neglected or seemed different from the norm. The site has seen much, much, much, more traffic today than any other day in recent history.

Yeah, I just found out how to see this info. I just never thought of, or had an interest in, looking for it before.

The last two bullet points would still be interesting though.

Can guests view a member's post history? Because what I imagine happened is that some journalists registered so that they could view one particular member's post history after he was mistakenly linked with the shooting by someone on twitter. The member wasn't Byte, but I won't name him as he might not even be aware of what happened. Ah, just saw in another thread he was already named.

The link, once disproven, was retracted by the tweeter and appeared to me more irresponsible than nefarious.

J
07-21-2012, 00:25
No. You must register to see the history.

There were a very very large number of those this morning. I suspect for that reason.

Thanks, you are all helping us by keeping things in check. If you see something out of whack use the report button. If you have to question what you are about to post maybe it would be best to hold off with it then for a while.

We are busy and its been tough even trying to keep up with everything. But thanks to all the members for helping out.

Or just doing their jobs, admittedly in a very lazy way. The fact that this member wasn't plastered all over the news this morning means they realised they were wrong and didn't do anything with the information, mention the site, or any of the less than appropriate posts that they may have read. And bearing in mind we watched a journalist basically describing pictures from facebook that were being shown on screen, that's a blessing.

OK, maybe I'm a bit misguided here, but I'm not sure. Going to a totally legit forum with the intent of digging up some dirt for some news broadcast or print story or ratings just seems dirty to me. No, it IS dirty. Shame on them.

Someone posted (ginsue maybe?) that this site was mentioned on USA Today earlier today. Seriously? WTF does this degenerate have to do with this site at all? Nothing that I have seen. Yet we're all referenced......thanks Liberal Media!

Would shutting down new members for a few days, or making the newest of new members be required to hit 25 posts, or be members for 7 days, before being able to search and things like that be helpful? just thinking aloud.

Well I see 32 people registered on the forums today, with only a couple having posted. One posted in this thread. One or two others introduced themselves.
83 new member accounts created on Friday. Of those, all but a handful were banned after finding fraudulent information in their profiles. Registerees came from all over the U.S., Ireland, various U.K. cities, Australia, Brazel, New Zealand and a few places in Canada. I only recall 1 or 2 posts from these sets of accounts (we did get a couple of new legit members too).

Of these registered accounts, a large number were from some news outlet or another (and of the thousands of guests, you have to know many of them were from news outlets as well). I know for a fact that they had folks from the BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, USA Today, New York Daily News, and a couple from CBS Broadcasting. I suspect other organizations based off of their login data, but since I can't be 100% certain & in order to maintain my integrity, I won't list them. We also had many from colleges & universities (including England's Oxford University) as well as many interesting Washington D.C., McClean, VA, Batimore, MD and surrounding areas log in's (some log in domains can be very telling, even if the "member"/guest claims to be from "Denver"). I'll let you make your own determinations as to who those might have been.

We had folks searching through our threads and posts to see if they could find the Aurora theater shooter amongst our membership. He isn't, but that didn't stop at least 2 (that we know of) of our members being falsely accused across the Internet of being the James Holmes.

Members of the Brady bunch and other anti 2A organizations sifted through our site as well, looking for anything they think they can use against our rights.

It was a busy day on the site and I need to state that it will continue this way for a while. This site, amongst many, will be scrutinized from top to bottom until a better story comes along, or they get tired of our non-criminal, non-threatening discussions (that, or unless the Pink Ponies scare them away first).

With that type of exclusionary behavior, this site would probably only have 3 members.
I am sure that a good percentage of the members here found this site by shear chance while searching for information or knowledge of solutions to problems. And if membership was a requirement to view threads, I for one would have kept on cruising the web to find answers to my questions.

Alex & All -

There are many times that the staff does things that draw the ire of many of our members. We usually know the fallout of these actions before we take action but proceed as it's considered the best choice for the members and the site as a whole. Sometimes, the point of our actions is clear from the beginning, such as our actions yesterday. It's always a tough balance and there are times we don't always make the right choice (remember the minimum 25 posts count to access the TP?), but we do our best.

Sometimes it's really hard hearing the complaints from our actions but it gets balanced by hearing the "thank you's" we receive as well.

With all of that said, this site is a community. While the staff is the visible "front line", it takes the participation of every member here to make this site as great as it is. Beyond that, it's the outstanding actions of members like yourself Alex (all of the endless hours of cleaning up the shooting sites around the state; etc.) that really make a difference.

The positive attitude towards safety, the desire to educate non-shooters coupled with the commeraderie amongst fellow shooters is what makes a site like this worthwhile. More than that, it helps to define who & what the shooting community it all about.

When something as horrendous as the Aurora theater shooting takes place, the world watches. They are looking to see what type of people we are. Are we crazed lunatics like this theater shooter, or are we just common folk with an amazing hobby? The members of this site typically exceed even the best assumptions as to what type of people we are. As a whole, we tend to be polite and considerate of differing views, understanding that not everyone will share our same beliefs. We tend be be safer because we know that a moments inattentiveness could have lasting repercussions. We tend to be more compassionate by reaching out to provide comfort, aid and care in times of tragedy. I am proud to be included as a member of such an amazing group of individuals.

Can managing this site be absolutely frustrating much of the time? You bet; but because of the members here it is truly a labor of love. You members make this site what it is. Too, you make this state and your communities a better place to live (even out-of-state members).

Together, we will make it through this tragedy until the next one comes along. We will persevere and we, as a community (and maybe as a nation), will come out stronger. To do anything less allows the evil in this world to win and it's not in our nature to let that occur.

So, I thank you Alex as well the rest of the membership. Stay strong and continue showing the world just how great we are!

Where's Irving the repost police? :)

This was already linked in the other big thread.

A LOT of new users. Some are suspicious with a user name " Have a nice day!" ???

Also I noticed a brand new user as of today was viewing the Trading post? I thought you couldn't unless so many days and so many posts????? Made no posts but saw them looking at an ad and didn't recognize the user, clicked on them and was zero posts and signed up today?? Maybe they were here before just a victim of the server crash of May 2012?

Sometimes you have to do what you need to for the overall good. Didnt realize someone had posted about the story already, though that repost infraction is pretty mild compared to what some muckrakers are looking for/at. We had a saying when I drove semi... dont feed the bears. Think that fits here perfectly right now.

Just razzing you over the repost, there is no offense. The member on here "Irving" has the official title "repost police" :D

I know what you mean, everyone is on edge. we are looked at now heavily by misinforming media due to our passion/hobby.

At the same time I am not going to pretend to be someone else for anyone, although I am very mild person compared to others on here. [Coffee]

Member "Have a Nice Day" is no longer with us. His account met an unfortunate demise because he listed a street address - no city - as his location. The street address mapped to the NE corner of town (just off Gun Range Road in Brighton), but he was coming into us from around Conifer. Too much of a discrepancy to accept. Buh-bye.

I saw the new member viewing the TP too. Looking into it.

It was said before you guys making sure this site is running and dealing with this NEW found Popularity has got to be frustrating and mind numbing.

Thanks again to all the mods!!! [Beer][Beer]

Could the newbie viewing the trading post be caused by getting a link from someone to it? He may have been seeing the permission error, but it was showing his name in the thread.

Funny, "have a nice day" is pretty much code for "get the fuck out of here" for my guys (casinos). Fitting that this asshat chose that name for himself. [ROFL1]

No harm no foul. Can't pretend to be what we aren't, but the same time, we don't want to look like anarchists, etc. That will just fuel the desire to ban guns again.

We don't have to say anything the damage has already been done and the biased media has gone overboard. Unfortunately the majority of the people in this world probably believe whatever the media tells them.

That article from Daily Beast the author is getting ripped apart in the comment section.

It is about fire control now, along with grassroots efforts, voting this fall, and making our voice heard, "NO MORE!"
