View Full Version : Dicks carded me for purchase of a rifle sling

Bought a Black Hawk sling for my shotgun. I was age checked for the purchase. My age was the entered into computer. Kind of weird that this would happen for a sling, never happened before. I wonder if stores are tracking things more because of the incident in Aurora. The sling was nothing special, just a basic two point sling.

Why did you purchase the item from them then?
Let them know with the lack of your dollars that you do not support such an infringement.
Did you speak with a manager? I would have let them know on no uncertain terms my view of such a practice.
We are going to get rolled over with this kind of crap unless you stand up and voice your disapproval.
Coming onto forum and griping about it is a waste unless you gripe to the business first.
I still get "carded" for ammunition purchases and I am 41 years old.
But a sling? Seriously?
Where was this? Last time I checked a sling wasn't a firearm or ammunition.
I would have told them no.

Location was in Centennial. Yes I complained, I used my 10 dollar score card to get it. Won't buy anything firearm related from them again.
That might be an isolated incident because I worked there at one point and have never heard of such a thing

yeah, that's going to help
not
as BP said, did you speak up at all? no
and you won't be anything firearm related from them??? BFD
how about "i'm not going to buy anything ever from them and I'm going to call corporate (phone calls are expensive, emails are cheap and ignored) and complain til i get a resolution????????"
Prolly could have gotten a better deal at Bowers, anyway.

That's some BS right there, buddy. I would have refused, but I have a tendency to make a scene when I feel someone is doing me wrong. I'm not allowed in the Chase branch in Aurora anymore.

Yes i am writing a letter tonight to the corporate office. My intention with this post is for others to pay attention to new corporate moves being done in response to the shooting. A sling is not a weapon, I suspect other bone head moves will be done too in the near future. I am not a person to make a scene but my reaction did draw attention.

A sling can increase the rate of fire by -1 when it gets in the way. [ROFL1]

I have had something similar happen to me at Sportsmans in Loveland. The kid that rang me out must of been all of 16 years old. I cannot recall what I was purchasing but I think it was a handgun holster. When I was prompted to for my I.D. I simply told them no. He then told me could not sell it to and it was just as a manager was walking by and over heard the conversation. He came by and apologized and told me that he had told the young kid that "almost anything firearms needs to purchased by an adult" because the kid was not sure on what to I.D. for and what not to. Probably just a mix up but if they entered your info in the system I would have declined and asked for a manager.

I personally would have cried "RACISM" and immediately requested to talk to Eric Holder!
We cannot be treated this way!
Our rights our being stripped away one by one!
Besides I heard they no longer sell Handgun Ammo so I wont even bother with that place.

Stopped at Dicks Sporting goods one time many years ago. Between the morons and prices have never been back. Anything they have I can get elsewhere.
Face it BSZ, you do look a little shifty. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c11/friggenearthlings/shifty-eyes-ani2faster.gif

THIS! I don't know why you didn't contact Bert, or one of our other wonderful industry partners. Bowers is great too! I got my Magpul ASAP from them and they were even nice enough to mount it for me!
Thanks for the fair warning though, I'm not buying anything firearms related from those guys now if that's their policy.

Dumbest shit I have ever heard of...
5.7 rifle round in a hand gun
almost everything starting with a .4 goes in both handguns and long guns
5.56 available in both.
worse argument that trying to classify an "assault weapon" or the new "high powered police pistol"

Happened to me as well. Was there by chance and saw that they had rail covers. Got carded for those.
When the girl asked for my ID I said "Why the F**K do you need that for?" She said "Store policy" I told her back "Its not ammo or a firearm so no ID is required" She replied back 'I cant sell it to you". So i decided to just leave.
This happned at the Flatirons Mall back in early June.
Just an FYI was only there looking around since the wife was shoe shoping and I need to burn some time.
BTW what is with the 10 round mags they sell with the AR15 they have?

Well it appears I won't ever be stepping foot into a Dicks ever again.
Then again...I may feel a little froggy one day and go in there to see if they actually would card me for something like that. Sometimes I just get a hankerin to start some shit like that :)
Take the sling back then go purchase the same thing and see if they do it again.

A phrase from Platoon! "It's politics man, politics". Dicks was probably started by Clinton, and now ran by Obama! I never liked them anyway!
I actually bought my very first gun at dicks sporting goods when I was 18. It was a good experience then. But over the time things have just got worse and worse. They used to carry handguns too back in the day. I only buy golf stuff there now.

When I saw that they and Sports Authority were selling AR rifles I was very happy that they both broke away from political pressure. Last time I bought ammo at Dicks was last fall for my hunts since 300wsm is hard to get. I was not carded for the ammo thus the sling caught me off guard. I suspect both may stop selling AR rifles down the road.

lol no. They screwed me over pretty well on a transaction that ended up costing me $2000. They basically told me to pound sand and I blew a gasket, made a scene, and directed the manager into his office for a private chat. I wasn't armed. Ironically, I'm much more restrained when armed.
They are a bunch of boobs. Whenever I have tried to buy a license there, especially a leftover, the kids cannot figure out how to work the license machine.

Unlikely. The clerks at places like Dicks' do what the register tells them to do - period.

While we're talking about Dick's.
This is an actual screen grab from Yahoo's NHL site. I may have posted it before. Not sure what kind of Hockey they play in NY.

Like that time I bought an R rated DVD from Walmart a few weeks ago... the register stopped them and said "Was customer born after #/#/1995?" Really? 1995, I have a freaking beard! The dumb girl carded me anyway and as soon as she saw that I had a DL that was horizontal (Over 21) she kind of got embarrassed. Does she really know that many 16 year olds with this much facial hair? I don't even get carded for cigarettes anymore... [Shake]
It seems like common sense is being bred out of our society or something. I understand what a register says and what "company policy" states, but really? I'm very disappointed in how far we've fallen.

I didn't realize that you were all talking about Dick's Sporting Goods until about halfway through the thread. I really thought you were just calling the incompetent individuals a bunch of dicks. [Roll1]
I appreciate Walmart's generally low ammo prices, but every time I buy ammo from them, I cringe because nobody knows what they are doing. I love getting carded for buying things like spray paint too...

You get CARDED for buying spray paint? I usually get my paints from Home Depot or Lowes... wow, carded... for spray paint? I know graffiti is bad and all but for real? What about those over 18 (21?) who tag? Carding them isn't going to stop it.

I think it's to prevent kids from inhaling (huffing)
1st off we all know about the Sling killings.
Then it was probably listed as a full automatic tactical sling.
Or a submachinegun sling.
You never know.

I say we all go in there grab a sling and holster and some more high dollar items, when they ask for ID just say no thanks. Call the manager, tell them to pound dirt. Just do it without gettin mad just for fun. See if they care if they loose a few hundred sales. [Coffee]
Lame! How the hell can you get carded for such a thing?
This is news to me, I work at the flatiorns store in Broomfield been their for off and on 4 years now not sure if it's a computer glitch or new policy but I wasent told! The ar-stuff is new since dec it isent going anywhere cause it's selling! I am going to double check on this cause this is stupid and I agree with you guys! was unaware That this is accruing at the registers! I will for sure be complaing to my managers and corporate.
Flatiorns has hand gun ammo we are still carrying it I haven't been told that we wouldent be in the future! Could be sold out but that's news to me.
As for the ten round mags on the guns that's what they send us so they can send them to other states which have those restrictions which I agree is dumb! They have sent a few recently troy ar's with 30rds.
Since I been with the company I have found every store is some what diffrent espessally any stores which where converted from galyans to dicks! I will agree the hunting license thing is screwed up we don't get the machines to do it up stairs. And have to send customers down to the cashiers who half of the time don't know how to use them unless they have been there for some time.
Will say its a job while I finish college!

I used to get denied "handgun" ammo at walmart before I was 21. I threw a fit more than once to them about it, and they were under the impression that it was ILLEGAL for somebody under 21 to buy "handgun" ammo. I explained to them that you can buy a handgun through private sales legally at 18, and that there are plenty of pistol caliber carbines on the market that you can buy at 18. They didn't care. Done buying ammo there.
