I've always liked his movies but believed actor Christian Bale to be a jerk due to the audio recording of the violent and nasty tirade he made against a set crew member years ago.
My opinion has now changed 1000 fold and I have nothing but respect for this man. He's earned a fan for life.

AURORA, Colo. -- Christian Bale is meeting with victims of Friday's mass shooting at an Aurora hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Bale plays Batman in the new movie 'The Dark Knight Rises,' the film that was playing when a gunman killed 12 people and wounded almost 60 at an Aurora movie theater Friday.
One of the victims who survived the shooting, Carey Rottman, posted two photos of himself and Bale in an Aurora Medical Center hospital room.
Rottman wrote on his Facebook page that he was shot in the leg during the Batman movie and was taken to the hospital in a police squad car.
Despite the injury, Rottman seems to be in good humor writing, "I am definitely feeling nothing but love and am ready to get started on this recovery! By the way, first 30 minutes of the dark knight were SICK!!"
Rottman has also posted photos of himself with Gov. John Hickenlooper and several members of the Denver Broncos.
Sunday, Rottman wrote, "Just got off the phone with my boy Payton Manning. What a great great guy. Thank you for the warm wishes Payton, I'll be rooting for you baller!!!"
Rottman also posted a photo of himself and a woman tagged Stephanie Rodriguez who Rottman calls "My hero."
"This is the amazing young woman who made a turnakit [sic] for my leg out of her belt after I was shot. Her bravery is simply inspiring. I cannot thank you enough for helping a stranger in need! You are a true guardian angel!" Rottman wrote.
Suspect James Holmes, 24, is being held without bond in connection with the shooting.
'The Dark Knight Rises' is the third installment in the Batman series.
When he got word of the shooting, Bale said his heart went out to the victims.
In a statement released Saturday, Bale says, "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them."

He does come off as a dick from what you hear about him. I think this is way beyond what anyone should have expected from him. Hats off to him for taking the time for the fans.

Equilibrium
Most likely a liberal Dick and his publicist probably told him this would make him a bigger star.
Christian Bale is Awesome!

That movies was crazy! I read a couple of stories after the screaming at a crew member thing and heard that the cast and crew loved him for it because the guy he yelled at was a dick:
"Bale became a hero to cast and crew after his tirade against (director of photography) Hurlbut, who was widely despised, sources tell RadarOnline.com exclusively. "Hurlbut was a condescending (bleep) to everyone," a source told us. His favorite line was "Why don't you go stab yourself in the head, you idiot."
and then Opie chimed in because his daughter was in that movie and on set as it happened:
"RON HOWARD: She told me about when it happened because of course it was really startling, she said wow this was a weird night. They were doing this tense dramatic scene, it was like the most important dramatic scene between them, they play husband and wife, and the DP disrupted it by walking around behind (the camera), which really is a no-no, you know, you’re an actor playing an intense difficult scene, that’s not supposed to happen. And he (Bale) went off. And I listened to the tape, and at the time, you know, he regretted it immediately. Bryce told me this is not his nature, this is not who he is. What shocked her so much, that he had gone off that much, but it’s really, it’s intense on a set … He flipped out, I’m sure he wishes he wouldn’t have gone on that kind of a rant, but, in all honesty, that kind of stuff happens, he’s an artist, he cares about it…"
I like the guy and his movies.
very cool of him to show up for the victims. Now hopefully he will donate a percentage of his earnings from the movie to help these people

Very possible, but he did it with a smile on his face anyway. Most actors these days wouldn't have bothered.
Whether he was sincere or just acting, either way his "audience" today bought it and that's all you can ask!
In other news, Warner Brothers (the company behind the Batman movies) is mading a "substantial" donation to the injured and has edited another movie that might create sensitivity to this tragedy:

WB to make 'substantial' donation to shooting victims
Warner Bros. is making a "substantial" donation to victims of Friday's shooting rampage in Aurora, Colo., during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."
A spokeswoman for the studio said that execs have arranged for the donation following conversations with Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.
The funds will be donated through Colorado's Community First Foundation, identified on the givingfirst.org website and distributed through several charities that support the shooting victims.
Warner Bros. has canceled the key parts of three international premieres for "The Dark Knight Rises." The studio has also pulled the trailer for "Gangster Squad," a period drama that featured a scene in which agents spray machine-gun fire into a crowded movie theater from behind the screen and has decided to remove the scene from the film, which opens Sept. 7.
Class acts all around!

I don't think he did it for the publicity. It sounds like this was only made known because one of the patients posted it on his face book page.
That's super cool of him to do, +1 in my book!

Just a gut feeling on my part but I don't think he did it for the publicity. It's a very cool thing of him to do. He could have made a phone call but took the time to do it in person.

i dont have much respect for anyone in hollywood,
while i do believe they probably did it to save their box office revenue, i do think it was a decent thing to do.
again probably self serving reason behind it, but when the studio says we better do some PR to get this thing back on track money wise, you do what you are told cause you have contracts to honor.
it was probably a corporate move not his personally
People'd complain if Bale/Warner Bros. did nothing.

Well, if he's here just cuz the studio said so, and he's teachable, perhaps this may influence him a bit in a positive way...
We don't know his motives, but his actions would seem to demonstrate caring & compassion. But only he knows the "why".

I just like the fact that Obama makes a big press deal about it....
Then Christian Bale just shows up, unannounced, no one knew...no press, no media about it...until he was already gone.
He didnt do it as a publicity stunt, but as an honest effort to help these people, Hats Off to you Mr. Bale.

This. If he'd wanted to make a big deal about it, he could have. He chose not to. He just went on my A list.
