View Full Version : I turn two years old today...

Two years ago today, I had a bad motorcycle accident. Long read, but I'm feeling a little somber today. I know it's not much compared to what some of our neighbors have gone through in the last week, but I figured I would tell my story.
I was riding back from a tux fitting (I was to be a groomsmen in a friends wedding) on a nice Monday afternoon at about 4. I'm waiting to turn left, barely rolling.. Foot not quite down. I'm in the intersection. Light turns to yellow, oncoming cars start slowing down.
Light turns to red as I'm preparing to clear the intersection. One lane of oncoming cars stopped, I start to go through the light, and sure enough, didn't see the car running the light in what would be her directions right lane.
I was probably doing 10 or 15 coming from basically a stop, and we estimate she was doing about 10 over. Which would put her at 55 mph. she hit me broadside. I didnt see her until she was probably within arms reach. I have an image stuck in my head from that day. Glancing over, seeing a car within about 3 feet of me, thinking "uh oh"... that image has stuck with me for two years now.
Witnesses say I flew between 15 to 20 high, and about 75 to 100 feet long after she got me. When I landed I didn't have my helmet on. It had been ripped off my head still strapped and everything. I woke up to somebody holding my head in place and a few strangers standing around me. One girl was asking me who to call. I remembered and told her my wifes phone number. Police were there quick, engines 44 and 45 were there. I remember them asking me what hurt. When I told them my leg, the officer said "well that's obvious".
I knew I was hurt bad at that point. I dont remember a drop of blood from that day but I remember my back hurting, my shoulder and my leg. I remember the concrete felt like it was burning me it was so hot and there being nothing I could do to help it. My wife was there fast, it was probably a mile from my house. She had no choice but to bring my 5 week old with her. She called her father who also lives very close and was there fast as well. My wife was on the seen a little after the police. It's still, to this day, hard for her to describe what she saw. I remember looking back up at her from the ground where I was laying and telling her that I was sorry... She was crying...
I dont remember much else from the scene, I do recall some stuff from the ambulance. I remember asking for the EMT to "do his thing, and to knock me out please". He couldnt because I was loosing way to much blood.
My wife told me later that she was standing at the table in the ER with me, covered in blood, holding my leg on the table and watching blood gush out rhythmically with my heart beat. At this point I didnt know the extent of the damage but basically, right side lower leg compound fracture, femur was basically shattered, left shoulder, 5 ribs, 3 vertebrae, collapsed left lung, and lost about 70% of my blood. I was rushed into surgery to work on my femur because they were worried about bone marrow entering the blood stream and getting to my heart. Over the next few days, more surgeries would come. I spent a couple weeks in the hospital, awhile at littleton, and some time at Porter, my wife basically by my side the entire time. We would have "baby therapy" time when my infant son would lay with me in the hospital bed. It was a crazy time.
Out of the hospital I spent months in therapy. I ended up having to go back into surgery to have excess bone growth removed from my femur. It had effectively locked up my leg, and only allowed about 35 degrees of bend. I finally ended up with a therapist named Crystal in at Parker Adventist. This is when my gains became tangelable. I knew every time that I met with her that I was going to hurt. She damn near put me to tears. But we moved my right leg more and more every session.
Eventually we got full movement back in my leg and knee. Today, I walk with a slight limp some times, morning especially. I have made it back onto the flag football (lol I know) field which had been something I had enjoyed for years before hand. My beautiful son turned two last month and is great. I have a hard time knowing that I was very close to not seeing what he has done in his life... From his first steps to randomly calling me "Chad!" and not daddy..lol.. I love every minute of it. It's been a ride.
It's like they say; "You start the game with a full pot o' luck and an empty pot o' experience... The object is to fill the pot of experience before you empty the pot of luck."
I'll save you the gruesome photos, but here are some good ones...

Wow man...just wow. Thank God you pulled through.
Congrats on the boy as well! I know he's glad his daddy is around :)
Glad you made it.
We are attending a memorial tomorrow for one of our brothers who was killed also last Friday AM on his scooter, he had logged over a million miles through the years but I guess his # came up
Jesus Christ, man! I'm glad you've recovered so well, not sure I would have at your age and I sure wouldn't now.
I'm 56 and started riding when I was 14, but I've never had anything worse than falling over when drunk. Blew my ACL in a fall (not riding related) in 2005 and haven't ridden since, but the way traffic and drivers are here, I don't miss it all that much. My wife decided shortly after we moved here in '96 that she didn't want to ride with me anymore because of the traffic here.
Rented a Heritage Softail last summer for a poker run and the 14 y.o. grandson rode with me. When we were on I-25 he was scared shitless and swears he'll never do it again.

Glad you made it through!
I learned to ride in Rome 30 years ago and I am still riding.
Somehow I never broke a bone in my life (a few times I did get my nose broken though...).

I don't have a bike right now... But I probably will ride again. Ironically, my wife is the biggest supporter of me riding again..
Thanks for all the comments guys.. It's been crazy..

I understand the somber feelings but, look at the fact that you are still here. The biggest fear in my life is that I wouldn't get to see my boys grow up.
I'm glad you made it thru this!
Glad you made it through! The traffic is the reason my wife and I quit riding. We decided we would like to grow old together in one piece!

Just browsed the story when I read it earlier (I'm @ work).
Just read it start to finish. Aside from the types/extent of injuries and HOW the accident occured, your story sounds amazing a lot like mine - even in how you tell it.
Damned alergies really acted up when I read this part:
. I remember looking back up at her from the ground where I was laying and telling her that I was sorry... She was crying...

Boy I tell ya.. I have been fighting back some allergies today too.. Just thinking about what my wife went through, and what I could have missed out on with my son.
The wife was still on maturnity leave at the time. I still think she went through more then I did...

Happy Birthday [Beer]
Spent 5 years building my last sled. I that five years two people I knew got put in the ground and one in a wheelchair.
I took her out on a maiden voyage and in 80 miles had 3 people turn left in front of me.
Parked it in the garage and sold it.
I love riding but to me it is not worth dying for.

Ya know, I've thought about that for a long time. Certainly during the recovery I would have given up the previous ten years of riding to have not gone through that. I do remember thinking to myself that I would probably be fine some day and want to ride again.
I havent been in a hurry to ride again, and quite honestly I may never. I do miss it, that's for sure. If I do ride again, I think maybe I'll be a little more weekend warrior about it, and not so much commuting, errands etc. 9 times out of 10, I would have been in my truck that day, but I was thinking it was nice and what the hell, my as well ride.

it's funny you should talk about broken bones. I used to pride myself in never having broken a bone (when I was younger). since then, including this accident, I've broken 22 (12 in this wreck). In fact, my hand (broken thumb) was in a cast until about a month before the wreck. and I was nursing a broken (maybe cracked) rib during that time as well. I feel pretty good day to day now, and I can keep up with my toddler. cant ask for much more...
I used to say that I wanted to go out of this life the same way I had come in; covered in blood and screaming... ;) lol (bad joke).
certainly came closer then I would have liked that day.

funny side story too...
it was about 3 months after the accident, I was still laid up on the couch / wheel chair etc. I can feel something in my foot, like a bad splinter. I felt it for days but couldnt really do anything about it. My wife is looking at it for me and runs her finger accross my foot. starts digging and sure enough, there is a piece of glass that she finds. Automotive safety glass that had been burried in my foot for 3 months had finally made it's way out. good little chunk too... lol

OUCH! Glad to hear that you are progressing so well!
I gave up my street-bike only after walking away from being swatted off of the road by a semi. Kept on dirt-biking, though... until I got broadsided by a Baja-Bug. Limped away from that one. Got my bell rung pretty good when I got broadsided in 2005... 5 months of memory weirdness that fortunately snapped-back into focus. Walked home after the ER exam. Only just now recovering from last Auto Accident... 10/2/10... had to have my Shoulder rebuilt... 7/8/11... and a chunk of Collar Bone removed from the Shoulder Socket from that one... it slowed me down for a few months. Physical Therapy was/is excruciating but soooooooooo worth it.
Keep up the good work and solid attitude![Beer]

I had glass and paint chips working its way out of my face for several years after an accident. I had one piece come out almost ten years after.
The date of that accident is the only date I remember other than my birthday.
Good to see you're doing so well. I hope you continue to do well.

I have been riding since I was about 10 yrs old, many accidents and once dumped the bike going about 55 MPH when a car pulled out in front of me. Been scrubbed with a bristle brush many times on the road rash.
No near deaths! Thanks god! On a bike anyway, closest I came was when I fell 85 feet straight back, was gonna land on my neck, thought I was a gonner! My prayers worked that day and next thing you know I was right side up, but crushed my tip and fib> Three surgeries later I was put back together with pins and even though the doc said i wouldn't walk for a year, I was on 3 months later.....
Gave up riding about a year ago, because it's not a matter "if" your gonna wreck but "when"............
Glad your around to tell the story...

Dude, you look like wolverine :D
Never been a huge fan of motorcycles...seen my grandfather wreck once too often back when I was a kid. I had a dirtbike and didn't really even care for it.
As for the anniversary thing...I was in a bad car wreck as a kid. 1979 and was in a toyota t-boned by a suburban. Each doing at least 55 at an uncontrolled intersection. My mom saw the suburban at the last second and gunned it. They said if it had hit about a foot further towards the front of our car I would have been dead.
I didn't have a seatbelt on and did a pinball around the inside of the car. Door, dash, off my mom...when everything came to a rest my head was down in the footwell and my hips and legs were up on the seat. To this day I can still see the view out thru my side window and the tops of trees there.
It was 45 minutes before the 1st person came on the scene...just another driver. He got out and walked up and went into shock. Just stood there staring. All the time I faded in and out of consciousness. Another 10 to 15 minutes went by before another driver showed up and he sent the first driver down the road to call for an ambulance. About another 15 minutes before it showed up.
I remember someone touching me and I came to with a stranger over me (EMT trying to put a collar on me) as I didn't know them I started throwing punches and kicking. 9 years old, injured, and I was fighting off an adult. My mom had to yell and yell at me to finally get me calmed down enough to get me out.
When they got me out, as soon as I was level I started puking blood.
I don't remember the ride to the hospital or much in the ER but they tried to get a tube down me to suction my stomach...I never did get it down. I think they tried something like 10 times. They then dumped me in another ambulance for a 2 1/2 hour drive to a major hospital where I spent almost a week in ICU. No windows, no clock. Never knew what time of the day or night it was in there.
May 1st, May Day. Been more than 30 years...I remember it every year.
Oh, the suburban, it rolled from hitting us. In it was a lady who had lost her husband a few months earlier to drunk driving and her son who had suffered major brain injury in the same crash as the father. I have always held respect for toyota considering the damage it resisted in that wreck.

I'm sure you had several docs checking you out at first: an attending ER physician, maybe an ER PA, probably the trauma surgeon, and Tim Lehman was your orthopedist. I'm glad he's the only surgeon you needed. Out of curiosity, I dug deeper into my old schedule - I was on that day, but in a different ER (I work in 3), so I wasn't there. Next time I see Tim, I'll give him shit about your wrong-size leg![ROFL1]

we tried to work on it for awhile, but there wasn't much we could do. thought maybe it would settle and stuff. I'm actually missing some bone in my shin, (there is like a soft spot where the bone only laid in on 3 sides) so it would have been very hard to guess which size to put in..

My date is July 8, 2012 on an Arctic Cat 550i ATV. Looks like the 911 call went in at 12:30am, probably 5-10 after the accident. Barb wire fences are not your friend. Definitely not as bad as some here, but scary as hell.

I dont know if it has been asked but what gear were you wearing when this happened. I have rarely seen a helmet get blown off of someones head. Even in my years of road racing it has only happened a few times.
Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking too. I used to have friends that wouldn't strap there helmets on (just put in on without using the straps is what I mean) and I always thought that was retarded. I used to make sure that strap was nice and snug. when I first was told about the helmet, somebody said that it broke off my head. even in my state I couldnt believe that. after I got out of the hospital, I went to the junk yard (with a couple big friends lol) and sure enough my helmet was in a bag next to the bike. I think what they had meant was that my visor was blown off, and some of the padding was sticking out the face mask part.
but the strap was still put together. the only thing I can figure was that it was an old helmet and maybe it flexed? maybe that flex allowed my head to pop out? not sure to this day.
and actually I dont know when it came off either. it was far enough away from where I was lying, that the police asked me if I was wearing one. so they didnt see it when they came to the scene. I dont know if the impact with the car did it, and then I some how lived through the impact with the ground. or maybe the helmet and I hit the ground after the car did and the helmet just flew far enough away that nobody saw it...
either way, I had somebody looking after me that day...
edit: I should say that I was wearing an HJC helmet. anybody hear if it's an HJC thing? I know they are cheaper then the nice ones....

A little progress report, I've been back in the gym after a long time out. I'm the biggest I ever have been (as in gaining some good muscle etc).. I feel much less pain then I have over the years and generally don't think about it to much.. My boy is 3 now, and is running around and loving life.
So far so good!
I don't have a bike right now... But I probably will ride again. Ironically, my wife is the biggest supporter of me riding again..
Thanks for all the comments guys.. It's been crazy..
After my little get off in January, my wife was very reluctant about me riding again. I respected her wishes, only riding customer bikes for test rides and a little dirt riding. Fast forward to June, she's all but begging me to get back on the bike, so I got my old 87 Interceptor out of mothballs and put it back on the road. Just started commuting again this week.
Congrats on your continuing recovery!

I don't know you, but I'm glad you are still here.
Thanks for sharing your story.
^^^ This. God Bless man, glad you are 'back'!
Crazy! I'm glad you survived this. I only rode for one summer and I count my blessings nothing happened. I always wanted to ride so I had to try it out. I'm glad I did because there's nothing like it but I've since opted to stay on 4 wheels for the time being. Too many variables involved riding a motorcycle with the general public.
Be safe out there everyone! Look twice and be aware of bikes.
Please bump this back every year! I think people should read your story. Glad you made it through it all. I Have not rode my bike this summer because the traffic just gets worse and worse on the highway every year.

Damn! I just read this for the first time and it hit me hard. I have never gone through anything like this but I have a boy who is 3 and cant imagine going thru what you and your family has. My boy IS the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my life! He is so much fun!
I am glad you are around to tell your story. Please update every year!

it's certainly been a crazy "ride".. I mentioned it last year when I created this thread, but I will probably ride again.. have gotten on a bike twice (two buddies were brave enough to let me take theirs out) and I definately starting getting those cravings back..

chokes me up thinking about it too.. it's messed up the life plan a little, (we were going to have another kid right away) but it's certainly helped us to focus on what's important..

seriously huh....
Congrats on 2 years and counting of the rest of your life!
I was put down at highway speed, and it was NOWHERE near as bad as your experience. Something ethereal about skidding down the pavement and watching the shower of sparks in front of you, that is your bike, sliding down the highway, beating you to the ditch.
Only took two blocks on the replacement bike to know I was back in the saddle, but swinging that leg over the seat that first time, I definitely wasn't sure .
Godspeed on your continuing journey, and may God continue to bless your family.
Ride on, brother! Just keep a keen eye out for the a-holes. There are definitely a SHIT-TON of them out there.

BTW...I still commute the I-70 corridor daily, Aurora to Golden, and can thankfully report that I have only had two serious near-misses this year.

Reread those last two posts of mine.
My situation turned out WAY more favorable than yours, and I was not trying to steal your juice, by any means. Just wanted to add my experience, to show my support to you, and your experience. I have a feeling you will ride again, based on your comments. That is awesome, considering what you have been through. Props to your wife and extended family, also, given their continued support of your desire to ride again.
I would have a beer with you anytime.

Glad we still have you, stories like yours make you want to hug your family a little more.
I remember this from last year. Always liked motorcycles, but never had one. All my time driving I'm either in rush hour or with the family.
As a claims adjuster, I always cringe when I get a motorcycle claim because the results can be all over the place, but usually not great for the rider. I don't handle injuries, so the bike claims I get are always where the bike is MY guy. I've had from a dented saddle bag to a fatality, and it's never comfortable. Glad you are continuing your recovery. Cheers.

Glad you're still with us and doing OK. 50 years on two wheels and some pain to go with it, still riding. Cars suck along with women drivers, 4 out of 6 interactions were women drivers.
Keep the faith.
