View Full Version : Wife is taking her CCW class tonight...what gun for her?
The thing in Virginia finally sent her over the edge.
She's a fairly experienced shooter and has shot everything I own except for my .357 Ti-Scan J frame. I'm thinking she'll do best with something like a 9mm or less in power. For reference, my 3" 1911 is too big. She'll carry in a purse most likely.
Any suggestions? WHat are your wives/daughters/girlfriends carrying?

find something IN PERSON.
try it on for size, and feel by the person who will carry and use it and go from there.

My wife took over a year to find something that fit "her" and it wasn't from lack of trying. I think we covered every shop and gun show in the area.
She finally decided on a Walther P-99 in .40 cal. (NOT the S&W P-99)
With the different backstraps, the smallest one fits her real well.
Take her out and let HER decide what fits her.

Take her out and let HER decide what fits her.
VERY sage advice.
But yes, I think a 9mm is a great load for the ladies. Just remind her that shot placement is paramount. Practice, practice, practice....

Get her a .500 S&W if she don't hit it the muzzle flash will at least make everybody wish they had given up. [roll]
I agree with everybody else let her pick the gun and then take her shooting and get her trained. A revolver in the hands of someone skilled is ten times more deadly than an auto in the the hands of a idiot. It does not matter what gun she picks as long as she is good with it. [wink]
My much better half is very fond of .45... she noted that 9mm and .40 were both too snappy for her in the smaller frames. She's a small woman to begin with so the Taurus PT145 fit her rather well.
I'm with the rest of the guys... get her what fits her and be damn happy that she shares your enthusiasm and interest!
Get her one of these and a huge purse...that's what HunterCO carries in his

I'd get some light 38 loads, have her shoot the 340PD (or whichever model you have) and see what she thinks first. It is nice and light and many women like that. My wife likes mine with a standard 38 load. Karl.
She'll get whatever she wants.[wink]
Firearm preference is a very personal thing. It's her choice.
Should there be any concern about the limp wrist factor when it comes to ladies and semi-autos? Is it a myth or can it happen even to a man? I just think a hammerless revolver would be more reliable and safer for any first time CCW permittee to carry. What ever she winds up getting, you can show her how much you Love her by splurging on one of these. http://www.ccwsupply.biz/ConcealCarryPursesPage.htm Good luck and remember Mothers Day is just around the corner!

The limp wrist thing is quite real. On my old IPSC race gun, a Para-Ordnance P14-45, it was so finely tuned to the round I loaded, if you held it just a little too lightly it would jam constantly. Hold it tight, it never once jammed that I can recall. Also, revolvers are just simpler in design overall and a better choice in my opinion for people who aren't avid shooters. Karl.
Didn't get her out to shoot last weekend, but maybe this weekend. After some dry fire exercises, she's leaning toward a J-frame, but we'll see what she thinks after she shoots mine.
