View Full Version : Looking to change up my carry gun.

I currently carry an XD40 full size. I no longer like it. Tired of it. Got a few thousand rounds through it and I am meh about it. Totally reliable, very accurate for me (when I am practicing), I can in most situations conceal and not worry about printing or the like. The only downsides for shooting it is that I have to either use a finger or shift my grip to drop a mag with my thumb(I guess I have stubby thumbs) and with hi-cap mags I only have 12+1 and with the .40 I take just a little longer to re-align my sight picture. I want to change to a 9mm in something. More rounds is more better.
So recommend me a pistol to go play with at the gun store. Not anything fancy, but reliable is gooder.
Hopefully no one is deeply offended by this thread.

A few places sell an extended mag release like this (http://www.pistolgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=26CCA) one that might help the one problem. I carry an XDsc in .40 with a spare mag but I hate the trigger and ordered a Powder River (http://shop.powderriverprecision.net/product.sc?productId=34) kit. Maybe a few tweaks would get rid of the "meh". [Beer]
edit: 165gr RNFP over 4.4gr of Titegroup is a nice soft accurate load at short range w/ quick recovery but I haven't chronographed that one and it's probably a bit slow for PF.

Glock 19 or XDm? XDm in 40 holds 16+1. in 9mm it's 19+1

Check out the S&W M&P. The full-size is slightly larger than the G19.

This, or a sig, then a glock.
Check out the xd9 sub compact. 13+1 and very nice to conceal. Same gun so you wont change much and its just another polymer pistol!
I have a spare you can test if you like.
Or check out an XDM in 9mmthe if you want full size

I'm a big believer in the G19. I've been carrying one at home and at work since 2005. A Vickers mag release and a good set of night sights are about all that's needed. I added a +2 extension to a 15rd mag and carry a 17rd mag as a reload.

Glock 19 or 26.

I wouldn't get too wrapped up about not being able to release the mag without adjusting your grip. In my experience a small percentage of people can do that with their gun.
As to the recent dislike of the XD...lots of guns out there.

Try the M&P or the HK P30. The HK is dead accurate, mine has been perfectly reliable (as are all of them) and is a great but pricey gun.

G19. Mick had the right idea. 17 rounds of 9mm in a compact is hard to beat.
These are 45's, but use your imagination and pretend their in 9mm. [Coffee]
Pick one, big, small, new design, old design. They all work and shoot extremely well.

It has been a while since I shot a glock. I think that or an M&P might be the next choice.

You think your XD trigger is nice and smooth, you should try out the G19's trigger.

This will change your gun. I have the PRP drop in kit. Reset is reduced by 1/2 and the trigger pull is around 3lbs.

My old german P99 (no S&W marks) smokes the Glocks in accuracy and trigger smoothness.

I never cared much for Glocks, but the G19 is an awesome gun. It's the perfect combination of size and robustness; requires little maintenance and shoots very well. After 5000 rounds, the G19 trigger is way better then you would expect for a striker fire gun. And again, this is coming from someone who does not like Glocks.

Glock 19 or S&W Shield, I know shield isn't "high cap" but its one of the nicest guns i've fired.

Same thing for me. Changed my carry gun to my full size. Been full circle, feel most safe with the full size. I use two holsters. One quality leather strong side when I am out of my vehicle. I either use a vehicle mounted holster or home made kydex cross draw when driving. On another note. My handguns purpose is to get me to my shotgun or AK which is always secured close to me.

I don't suppose you want to switch into revolvers do you? I have carried what most members have on here, but my SP101 still carries the easiest. Sure not as many rounds, but deadly accurate for being a snubby with Crimson trace grips.
