View Full Version : Going to put together a rifle to take camping
Thought I would gather thoughts and opinions before I started rounding up parts.
My plans are to keep it short, light, and simple. Here are the ideas I am kicking around on some of the parts.
16" "pencil profile" barrel with mid gas port
A1 upper receiver
Cavalry Arms C8 handguards
A2 flash hider or maybe a PWS Triad
The lower will be a standard lower with "mil-spec" internals.
Haven't thought much about the stock yet. Possibly a fixed, A1 style or the Magpul fixed stock. Most likely a retractable to make it a bit shorter and easier to pack. Probably run a VLTOR Imod.
The Ace shorty stock would be my choice for your purpose. I'd still go with a flat-top upper and put the MagPul sights on it...overall slimmer and lighter. Really like the PWS muzzle treatments. Barrel, maybe a 14.5" with a pinned FH, a little shorter and lighter still. If you are interested, I have a few of the Firebird barrel nuts that I can do a short Carbon Fiber handguard saving you a half a pound.
You can get under 5 pounds with that set-up.
Sounds cool and I'm sure will be cool after seeing some of the rigs you have built in the past.
I have a set of the standard handguards like you want in midlength and a bunch of A2 flash hiders so if you want those hit me up.

I appreciate the offer (and all of the other advice too). Thanks. [Beer]

Thanks. I actually have a brand spanking new set of the Cavalry Arms C8 handguards just sitting around gathering dust. I might take you up on one of those A2 flash hiders if I don't go with the Triad.

"No school, like old school!" (not implying your old or anything, in case someone reads it that way.) [Coffee]
Sounds retro super cool.......
Did you get a lower yet?
Did you get a lower yet?
No. Haven't had time in my schedule lately. When I do get time every place is closed. Probably be working Friday again but hopefully will have some time Saturday. I hope.

You could by one here, for $300:)

Here? Where? See no $300 lower? What you talking about Willis? [Coffee]
Are you looking for a complete or stripped lower, brand, or don't care, just local & good price?
I think I just found my next custom lower I want, reminds of something, like a FAL, it is unique......CORE15 HARDCORE LOWER http://core15.com/products/uppers-and-lowers/hardcore-lower.html

Stripped. Brand isn't super important. Spike's, Surplus Ammo & Arms, Aero Precision, etc.

Isn't that the same lower you have on one of your rifles already?

If you buy one from surplus ammo direct and ship to your fav FFL, might make it easier to coordinate.
If I see something give a shout at you. Maybe one of the industry partners here will post they have something.

No, that was a seekins precision I have, the one I listed above they removed part of the magwell, gives it that FAL look, a little lighter as well probably, for $210 sounds like a good price, but now that I think about it for that price I could get 2 basic lowers, what am I thinking?
Update:
I have the lower receiver on hand, the parts to finish out the lower should be here later this week, and I ordered an upper today from Palmetto State Armory because they were on sale and I couldn't put one together any cheaper.
Once everything comes in and gets put together, all I will be lacking is a bolt carrier group, a charging handle, and some kind of rear sight.
If anyone is curious about the upper, I went with a 16", light-weight middy. It's chrome lined with a 1:7 twist and is pressure tested and mag particle inspected.
PSA is hard to beat when they are on sale for sure

Yep. $279 for the upper with no BCG or charging handle. By the time I bought a receiver, a barrel, a front sight base, a flash hider and crush washer, a barrel nut, a delta ring, a gas tube, and a set of hand guards I would be into it for well over their asking price. I don't think I could buy/build an upper with a non-chrome lined barrel for that kind of money.

Have you gotten this together and shooting yet? Sounds like the direction I am heading once I get the parts lined up.
Curious to get some feedback on how it's working for you[Coffee]
Just got back from vacation. Bad news is the missing fire control parts that weren't in the lower parts kit I ordered on August 25th still haven't arrived yet. The good news is the upper I ordered from them about three weeks ago should be here Monday. Hopefully the missing trigger parts got thrown into that box as well. If not, I'll have to call them back again to see what's going on.
Anyways, PSA won't be seeing any business from me in the future if the trigger parts don't get here shortly.
Update.
Here it is. Still incomplete but getting farther along. Still needs a BCG, charging handle, and a rear sight. Oh, and a trigger group.
Not sure which direction I will go with the handguard. I might run the C8 in the second picture or maybe a Magpul MOE. Possibly a cheap, drop-in quad rail of some sort.
The buttstock will be replaced with a VLTOR Imod.

Isn't the m73 for a carbine length gas system?

Looking good, bummer on the PSA parts. Hope the bits show up soon.

I'm heading down to Bowers this morning to pick up the trigger parts I need. If PSA ever sends the other parts I'll just hang on to them for spares.
