Tomorrow, 22 April, there will be yet another rifle only match in Pueblo. This month the main emphasis is bolt action rifles, but any type rifle can play.

Set-up begins at daybreak and the shooting starts around 10:00.

Put down the mouse and get out there.

Nope. Just a rifle, sling, some mags and ammo.

Is there going to be a rifle match in Pueblo on 9/23? If so, i am new to this, is there a safety class? I have taken the IDPA safety class, will that work?
What type of rifle is typical? I have a scoped AR-15 with a couple mags.

Sorry, for all the questions in advance.

Hoser
09-17-2007, 21:26
There will be a match this Sunday. Your IDPA Safety class will work just fine. I can tell you the differences when you show up.

By far the most common rifle is an AR-15 with a low to medium powered optic. Bring 200 rounds and a few mags. Mag pouches on a belt are nice, but not mandatory.

The IDPA safety class that you took will be good. If you took the class in Pueblo, chances are that I was the intructor. Hope to see you there.

No it is not required for you. You took one for an IDPA match that covered how to safely run around the range with a loaded gun.

Tell the Range Officer that this is your first rifle match and they will be nice.

Big thing is to keep the muzzle downrange and your finger off the trigger while moving.

Check out Zak Smith's outstanding article "Fighting Optics for the AR15" in the Feb 4th edition of the Shotgun News (on news stands now) and you will see several pictures from this match and local shooters may also recognize several members from this board shooting in the match.

Come out and shoot, maybe Zak will make you famous [;)]

Matches start up again in March.

From the match director of Pueblo 2-Gun...

We will have a rifle match on the 4th Sunday in MARCH.

Sorry no match this month. Bodmer and Rhodes are using that weekend to repair some of the things we all shot up last year, build a couple of new barricades, and confab on the strategy for 2008.

As soon as possible we'll get out the new rules/format. Remember we will shoot Rifle on the odd numbered months and Shotgun Only on the even numbered months.

what kind of hardware is par for the course for a tactical rifle?

Hoser
02-23-2008, 06:42
AR-15s with low to medium powdered scopes.

The most helpfull thing is knowing zeros out to 400-425 yards.

A 1-1.5 MOA rifle/ammo is all that is needed. The rest is up to you.

DeltaKilo
02-23-2008, 13:28
I have no idea what MOA my AR is, guess I'll need to dig up a way to test it out. Also will need to get a decent scope for it. I'm eyeing the Burris currently.

The fourth Sunday this month falls on Easter. That is unfortunate but we will have a Rifle Only match as scheduled. The weather is projected to be mild and sunny.

As always set-up begins around 0645; walk-thru at 0945, use the blue lock (2506) and relock it back in a series so other users of the range have access; cost is 15.00 dollars; you can expect to shoot about 100 rounds if you are very good, bring more if you expect a miss or two it, it easy to carry extra rounds back home, it is hard to make them appear when you are in the middle of a stage.

Hey Hoser. I will be there. I get off work just past midnight, so I doubt I will be there too early considering I have to drive down from Denver, but I am looking forward to it. Take it easy on me as this will be my first comp. but somebody has to finish last. And I have no problem being that person. See ya on Sunday.

Hoser

Get there when you can. Shooters meeting at 9:45 and the shooting should start around 10:00.

Come find me. The dogs and I wont be hard to find.

Weak!

Weather was fine...hell I came from Monument hill...

I know, I know. I squat to pee now days. Turn in my man card.

It was really nasty over on the east side of the Springs before sunrise. By noon the roads were dry. Figures.

But I got everything ready to go for SMM3G. All I have to do is load the car.

One more rifle match would have been nice, but...

I drove down from Denver and I had a great time. A couple of guys drove down from Greely/Ft Collins. It was a great expierence for a first timer in a competition. Got real muddy and had a great time. I will be back for sure.

I'm by the Springs airport. We got ~6.5" of snow. I scoped things out @ 5:30am and went back to bed.

I also spent the day getting my stuff together for SMM3Gun. Just haven't decided if I want to clean my shotgun. Maybe tonight...

Hoser

Nope. From now on its semi-auto rifle or shotgun. Bolt gun was not popular enough and people wanted more shotgunning.

Hoser
09-28-2008, 18:10
Fun times today. Hard shooting. Nothing about today was easy.

The weather forecast of mid 80s and light breezes must have scared a lot of you away.

Next month, shotgun only. Bring slugs, buck and Motrin...

Note to self:

You need to start kicking ass on Standards.

Hoser
10-26-2008, 17:54
I think todays match was the hardest match I have shot. Tough winds and high round count stages. I was holding off 12-18 inches at 425 yards. Virginia count steel at the first position was not good to me. After that, I was good. It took me 63 rounds to finish a 45 round stage. A new low for me.

Next March things will start up again. Justin and I will be running the show. The stages will still be tough just like Eddie has made them in the past, but there will more shooting positions and fewer targets to keep the confusion down for shooter and scorekeeper.

Till then, I am taking some time off being a match director and gonna do some reloading and get the basement finished.

Justin
10-26-2008, 20:17
This match totally kicked my ass!

I did, however, do better on Standards.

Hoser's got some pretty excellent ideas for next year and I'm looking forward to helping to run the matches.

ColoWyo

Hey guys. Thanks for taking over the match. The few times I have done it, I had a blast. Much appreciated.

Hoser
11-04-2008, 17:19
Justin and I have put together a good group of guys to handle things.

I am hoping that some of the changes I make will make it a little less intimidating for newer shooters to come out and give it a try.

Hope to see you next year.

Hows the baby? Have you got any sleep outside the cockpit in a month?

ColoWyo
11-05-2008, 15:28
Sleep? Whats that? I gotta go back to work to get some rest. Don't have to change diapers at the DoubleTree.[Evil]

Hopefully I can make them next summer. Maybe you should get rid of the standards. That stage beats me like a Sunday morning boner.

Hoser
11-05-2008, 19:33
Maybe you should get rid of the standards.

Part of me hates standards. A big part. However it is a great way to tell if you are getting any better and exactly what you need to work on.

Justin and I am going to change the standards though.

Still 75 seconds. Still no penalty for misses. Still shot on MGM Flash Targets.

200 yards. 5 shots prone. Mono-podding, bi-pods, slings, ect *are* allowed.

175 yards. 5 shots sitting, kneeling or squatting. Mono-podding, bi-pods, slings, ect *are* allowed.

150 yards. 5 shots standing. Unsupported.

Then 5 standing, reload 5 sitting, reload 5 prone at 150. Mono-podding, bi-pods, slings, ect *are* allowed.

I never understood, liked or agreed with Eddies completely unsupported in all positions rule. I nagged him about it and we never saw eye to eye on it.

We are also going to time plus scoring like 99% of al the other matches out there. Each stage will be worth the same amount of points.

All 3 stages will require no more than 30 rounds each keeping ammo costs down and wear and tear on barrels. I like to shoot and can afford to shoot more, but after a while you just keep doing the same thing over and over.

The mid-range stage will have some in your face paper to make sure we remember how to shoot close up at warp speed. A very important part of 3-gunning I think Pueblo rifle has lacked this past couple years.

We might also have bolt gun side matches. Low round count (15-20) and Virginia count steel.

ColoWyo
11-06-2008, 19:09
Sounds like fun Hoser. I might have to do some refiguring of my AR. I've been shooting these with my Varmint AR with a Lupy 6.5-20. Not sure how that would work on the close up stuff.

Any excuse to buy some new toys.
