View Full Version : FOPA Gains Gone - Online Ammo Sales Legislation
The things we gained in 1986 with the MG ban are going down the drain.

I honestly don't see this ammo sales ban getting any farther than some posturing on the part of Loutenberg* and other antis and leftists.
Keep in mind folk that they pen these damn things EVERY FREAKIN' session and they rarely get anywhere (especially since the GOP controlled house won't take it up ... and after November I suspect the house and senate will both be under GOP control).
* yes, I misspelled his name on purpose.
I liked the term "regular civilian". Can't let those whackos get their hands on ammo...too dangerous [Rant1]

I just posted this on my Facebook ... I know most of you all around here get the details but the sheep out there don't so I had to go in to more detail....
but question still stands.. how does it help at all ??
Can someone explain to me why banning online ammo sales will help anything? So what if the aurora shooter bought 6000 rounds online .. he only used less then 100 rounds total ( 50-75 rounds of .223, 8 rounds of shotgun, 15 rounds of .40 cal pistol rounds) I can go buy all that at ANY Wally world for less then 100 bucks( would be less then 50 bucks but the pistol rounds come in 50 round boxes only) and pay CASH. If you buy online you have to use a Credit Card, that has your name on it! Pretty much ALL online retailers of ammo require you sign for the delivery. When I buy ammo at Wally World they look at my ID to see if I'm over 18 ( over 21 for pistol rounds) that's it. they don't write my name down .. NOTHING. You know how they even know that the aurora shooter bought 6000 rounds?... Cuz he used a dun dun dun ......... CREDIT CARD!
Hell just a couple of months ago I bought about 200 shotgun shells at Wally World. no one batted an eye. all I did was "flash" my ID and on my way I went ( after paying cash of course)
So again explain to me how this is going to help ANYTHING Other then drive up ammo prices, remove discounts for buying in bulk, cost JOBS for these online retailers, and make buying ammo even more anonymous then it is now?

That IS the purpose of the bill.
Look, these people don't give two shits for the lives of ANYONE (just look how many Mexicans they gleefully let die to try to push a new AWB). Its all about control. Its all about consolidation of power in their hands.

You have a FB account! Wow! You're not a mass killer.
I've talked to some people from other countries about gun control. One way to do it effectively is to tax the crap out of ammo. It keeps it out of the hands of poor people. Wealthy people are usually not a threat to the powers that be. It's all about power, not safety.

As a regular citizen I shoot more then a 1000 rounds in 5 weeks, probably around that many in a couple of weeks. WTF. And besides, what did him having 6000 rounds in his apartment have to do with anything?

This is a comment I posted on the FB stauts I posted about a min ago
I think part of the " problem" is that folks think he was carrying 6000 rounds on him during the shooting... do they have any clue what 6000 rounds of ammo weighs? I'll use the .223 numbers since I have no clue what the exact ratio of rounds he had was.
1000 rounds of .223 in a shipping box ( just a plain old cardboard box here folks.. nothing special) is about 28 pounds. the Aurora shooter( yes I refuse to say his name) was NOT carrying 168 pounds of ammo on him. even if you call it 10 pounds of cardboard he was not carrying 158 pounds of ammo.
ok so what if he had all those rounds in 100 round drum magazines? well a loaded beta C 100 round drum mag for the ar-15 weighs about 4lbs 11oz loaded it would take 60 of them to hold 6000 rounds which works out to about 281lbs! I KNOW He was not carrying that!
what if he had all that ammo in a standard GI Issue 30 round mag ? well those come in at 1lb 2oz loaded .. it would take 200 of them to hold all the ammo.... that's about 225 lbs. Again he was not carrying THAT.

I'm 37 ... but the cashier looked about 12... just doing her job I suppose.
when I bought 1000 rounds of .223 at a mom and pop gun store they didn't even ask for the ID .. just the cash.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/jul/30/obama-will-evaluate-bill-ban-online-munition-sales/
White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday that President Obama will "evaluate" a new bill that would ban online ammunition sales in the wake of the shooting massacre in Aurora, Colo. That left 12 dead and dozens more injured.
During the daily press briefing, Mr. Earnest was asked whether Mr. Obama supports the measure, which aims to end sales of unlimited amounts of ammunition on the Internet and other mail orders. The bill also would force ammunition dealers to report large sales of bullets and other munitions to law enforcement authoritiesAt first Mr. Earnest said he didn't know if Mr. Obama was aware of a bill sponsored by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Democrat from New Jersey, and Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a Democrat from New York. He later amended this remarks to say the White House would evaluate the measure.
"The president's view that have been relayed quite frequently over the last few days, you know, is that he believes in the Second Amendment of the Constitution, in the right to bear arms but he also believes that we should take robust steps within existing law to ensure that guns don't fall in the hands of criminals or others [who] shouldn't have them," he said, referring to gun-control comments Mr. Obama made during at speech at the National Urban League.
The reporter followed up by asking whether the president's push for enforcing existing law would prevent him from supporting the bill banning online munition sales.
"Well, like I said, I haven't seen the specific piece of legislation that has been offered up today. But as those — as that and other pieces of legislation make their way through the legislative process, you know, we'll consider — we'll evaluate them as they make their way through the process," he noted.
So he bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition, and, due to his weapons, he fired off, at the very most, 123.
AR-15 - 100rds
870 - 8rds
G20 - 15rds
And they feel the obvious move is to ban sales of ammo more than 1,000rds.

Legislating any material object in an attempt to change human behavior is an exercise in ignorance.
typical BS. I doubt this bill will go anywhere either.
What blows my mind is several places require you to send or upload your photo ID to prove the age requirement. You have to show it off at wal-mart already to prove over 18 or 21 for the ammo.
They are essentially turning 1000 round cases into a firearm and requiring you to be a FAL instead of a FFL...
what a waste of tax dollars.

This legislation isn't an attempt to reduce gun violence. They're just using that as an excuse because the emotions from these murders are still high and they need something for people to get worked up about to get crazy bills like this passed. The real reason for bills like this is to slowly chip away at civilians owning ammo in the first place.
That's what they do. They're like knats...they just keep bugging you and bugging you until you swollow their shit. They will keep throwing different bills at the wall until something sticks and it's harder for you and me to buy ammo or guns, even if just by a little.
What the hell, try to regulate 1000 rounds now and then sometime down the road they will go after 500...then 100. Then add a tax to triple the price. Little by little, they try to take it all away...
These anti people have a master plan and they will patiently take one tiny piece at a time until the 2A is gone.

It's called a Hegelian Crisis.
It works like so:
Manufacture a "crisis" (or amplify a real problem to the level of crisis).
Get the people worked up over the faux crisis and demanding that "someone do something about it".
Propose a solution that appears as though it will address the crisis but actually pushes another agenda you could never get the people to support.
Rinse.
Repeat.
Classic tyranny.

^ bingo.
Once it starts, then some wise ivy leaguer will declare that possession of x amount of lead or powder or any other component constitutes a crime. It is all about control not saving lives.
What moron are they going to put in charge of determining what kind of weapon the peasants need or don't need? The loss of liberty in this country is astounding.
Remember the election is now only about 100 days out.

I can't wait until 3 days after the election for everyone to shut the hell up about it.
In Illinois it is a felony to own a single cartridge without a valid FOID card. In New York you need a valid pistol permit to purchase any ammo which can be loaded into a handgun, even if a rifle will also accept that same ammo. In New Jersey it is a felony to own hollowpoint ammo. It is already a crime for any "prohibited person" to possess any "ammunition component" which would include a shell casing or one of those stupid bullet keyrings they sell at the flea market.

In New Jersey it is a felony to own hollowpoint ammo.
Though NJ's gun laws are horrible, this is incorrect. It is a felony to possess hollow points in the commission of a felony. Same with body armor. You can own it, you can use it legally, but if you're doing crime with it, that's another felony count

Also technically incorrect. Hollow points are generally illegal in NJ, except for specific sections as granted by law.
Doesn't something have to be illegal nationally in order for it to be a felony?

I think it would be interesting to ask people how much space 1000 rounds takes. While heavy, it doesn't take much room. I was looking at one of my 900 round stripper clipped M193 ammo boxes and it doesn't take much more space than a 12 pack of Coke. 6000 rounds is what, about half of a normal drink cooler? I think people hear 6000 rounds and think it is rooms filled of ammo.
Do we restrict the amount of paper a printing press can use? How many pages a newspaper can have
Back to the OP, what are the specific gains from the 86 deal that we have lost?
