View Full Version : CO DMV selling personal information?

Begin rant.

My wife renewed her Colorado DL online a few days ago (who wants to go stand in line at the physical DMV anyway). In the renewal application questions were asked regarding current insurance (to be expected, I guess) and also current vehicles she owns. I thought it was BS for them to ask the question about cars (this was for a DL not registration) but it was required so she filled it out. The renewal application also asked for credit rating which is MAJOR BS. That is no business of the DMV! [Rant1]

Anyway, fast forward to today and she has been getting spammed via cell, email AND text from multiple insurance agents trying to get her to change insurance. They all have said she requested they call her. She did no such thing. The only explanation is the DMV either sold or outright gave her personal information to these agents which is complete and total BS and a major abuse of authority by the DMV. We are both pissed. [Rant1][Mad] F'n crooks.

Is it possible you are the victim of phishing? Is the site you went to the REAL Colorado DMV site, or is it a fake made to look like it?

I wouldn't doubt it if they do.

I know the County sells your info. I had a mailbox full of junk mail addressed to me at my new house before I even had my change of address put in at my old place.

This I don't know. She did it from her work computer. I hadn't thought of this. Makes me wonder and has me worried...

Nope... This happened to me too. Right after I renewed my DL my phone started blowing up every day with insurance companies calling me saying they had the quote that I requested... I never requested any quotes!!! I thought it was possibly identity theft but I asked the insurance companies where they got my info and they said DMV.

No need to worry. It was the DMV. It is bullshit and I was pissed too!

I had the exact same thing and I know it wasn't a fake website because I got my DL in the mail a couple of weeks ago. I asked one of the insurance companies where they got my info and they said "did you renew your DL recently?"

The wife and I renewed our licenses in person recently and didn't have these problems.

But then again we are registered here http://www.coloradonocall.com/

OK, something fishy is going on. I just renewed mine too to see what the questions were. I didn't get one question about credit, insurance or cars. Although we both got identical receipts in our email...

She walked me through what website she used (confirmed by her history) and it is all legit. Although she couldn't walk me through the actual renewal process so is there a chance she was on the real DMV website and then somehow a link from that site sent her to a fake one? And then the fake website still submitted a renewal application and paid the DMV after they stole her info?

Just renewed my DL at a County DMV office last week. The whole experience only lasted about 20 minutes, counting the wait, paperwork, eye test & photo.

The guy didn't ask me any questions, but I know El Paso County does sell personal information. We'll see if I start getting junk mail. (no more phone calls than normal right now)

I did have all those questions... And thought it was weird at the time too.

We did a little more digging. We think she may have gotten to a fake website.

This one

http://coloradodriverslicenses.org/renew.html

This tells you all the rules and at the very top gives you the option to renew "online". The link brings you to a official looking form with an option to "renew". That opens an application that asks for all the information in question.

At the bottom in the small print is says this application is a request for insurance quote...

Looks like she got duped. Fire drill over. [Stooge]

PS - she did make it to the real website at some point to actually renew which explains how we got a receipt.

Maybe you did or did not click on a give out info box? I don't remember a box but I know I didn't fill out info on insurance and cars etc.

So more people don't get duped... I feel it's a good idea to show that the real site to renew a drivers license is:

https://www.colorado.gov/vroom/renewlicense/index.jsf

Mike Rosen did a little bit on this a while ago after the Governor was on his show.

The OFFICIAL CO DMV will not do any of these things. There are "middle man" web sites that you can use that will process your info and get you your new license, but they DO ask for additional info for promotional purposes and you will get inundated with insurance offers, etc.

These sites look totally official, like they are the actual DMV, but they are not.

Most (all?) Colorado Government web sites end in .gov or .co. Be suspicious of all others.

I started getting insurance offers after applying for insurance companies for employment. Mostly State Farm and Progressive.

NPR recently ran a story about city govs selling your info. The jist is basically that all that info is already public and out there, but since the gov has it all in one tidy package, companies just buy straight from the gov.

This is the kind of thing you get when people buy into the idea that people who successfully run businesses, are ideal to run government.

I had to do mine in person (CDL) and was asked none of that.
none.

Oh, and what a fucking waste of my time to sidetrack this rant.

our government is totally out of control and worst of all, they are utterly incompetent.

DUDE That was AWESOME!! I messed w/ a telemarketer once like that, acted like I was slapping someone and screaming like there was two of us, She freaked out and did everything she could to get off the phone![ROFL1][ROFL3][LOL]

I'm nostalgic for the days where they had robo-telemarketer calls where they would record a response. It would hang up when it went silent. I trained my dog to bark at the phone and I'd set the handset on the floor and she'd bark forever.
