View Full Version : Thinking About An AK47.......

.......but I don't know crap about them. No particular reason I want one, just to plink and another SHTFG. All I know about AK's are they are very dependable, they go bang when you pull the trigger and the 7.62x39 is very avaiable and cheap.

What's the best AK for the money and what do I need to know about them? Thanks for any input!!

Make sure you buy mags and ammo then get an AK. They are all pretty much the same, pull trigger, they go bang and engage target.
Which one is better is like asking which AR should i buy. There are lower end (or use to be) price wise, Wasr 10's and some of what ever else century has in stock.
Fit, finish, accessories from vendor get the cost climbing. The Arsenals are supposed to be one of the more desirable AK's out there. I have a few and for the money my Romanian matching number parts kit on nodal receiver does the same thing for much less money.
You might consider buying a Saiga in it's sporting config and convert it.
The link shows the AK in various configurations, giving you an idea what's possible.

This here is the best bang for the buck right now

There are AK builds here and there. Once i'm back on 2 feet i will probably sponsor one in the fall.

Wait for Rachal Ray (jreifsch) Zteknik (Bob) or brycom to chime in. They're the geAKs

The center fire link will give you an idea of price. Like cheap ammo, the days of a $300 AK are over.
You should do some reading on building an AK. Price, tools, 922 US mfg parts, parts kit cost etc. Then decide if you want to tackle a build or pay for one at a FFL or private sale.

What about the Arsenal SLR-107 series? I have seen those and they are pretty nice builds...the price is NICE too.

They are all nice. depends on your wallet and what your expectations are from the gun. All mine do the same thing at the same distance, pull trigger it goes bang. From the lowly build to the Arsenal 106's and saiga conversions.

I have one of those AMD's very nice. It does seem to be a weenie magnet for Americans who like to whine about comfort. If you can get a good yugo or romy with nds receivers for cheap thats a good start. I agree with Jim btw get your mags and ammo first. The guns are always going to float around.

I am going to purchase an AK soon and want something decent. I have looked at WASR's and just can't deal with the horrible fit and finish on them.

Take a look at Atlantic Firearms selection. They are very used to working with buyers who have a friendly FFL.

Got out and shot the ak today, and it's so much fun. And accurate. I'd recommend one. Or three.

But echoing what others have said, get the ammo and mags ASAP.

I reccomend a build for 2 reasons.

1. You know how every bit goes together and should function. No need for a gunsmith.

2. You get to meet some great people during the build parties.

That being said I picked up a Zastava PAP for $350 during BIG R's storewide sale a few weeks ago. Yes it's a single stack, but it's a decent quality AK and with a bullet guide and a little bit of work it's a full fledged AK.

I got a pap myself a while ago and converted it lol did mine with a dremel instead of a mill, took a while on the trunnion. But they don't need a new bullet guide just grinding down the blocking piece but mine needed a new mil spec bolt (I had a spare east German bolt that head spaced nicely) I also used m70 hand gaurds and an m76 butt stock

Um.... it's an AK. If it shoots, I'd say it's good enough. Fit, finish, and AK shouldn't be in the same sentence. My opinion.

Neither should AR, dependability, quality, etc. be in the same sentence.

Ha! It seems everyone has an opinion...
Anyways the choice is made and I picked up an Arsenal, hopefully get to shoot it in the next week or two.

Those Polish under-folders are looking nice for the next one [Muaha]

Thanks for the discussion!

Call me a traditionalist or an AK snob or what ever, but I bought my AK before I got my AR... I love it, it's a Romanian WASR-10 with a 1985 stamp on it.
Basically this:
http://www.discountgunsales.com/images/P/WASR-10%2016.jpg
Simple, rugged, and reliable. That's really all I need. To each his own, but I don't like AKs with CAR stocks on them, or plastic grips, or even optics... I guess I'm old fashioned. Like Mikhail says "I build perfect rifle, only addition you need put on is magazine with bullets and shoot." [Coffee]
