View Full Version : Why is 80234 listed as "Denver" ?

Although 80234 does not seem to include any part of Denver/Denver County when mapped, it is often "pops up" as Denver in most searches and sales software (viz enter the Zip Code and the S/W fills in the City/State).
It seems to be bounded

East - I25
South - 103rd/ 104th
http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&hl=en&q=denver+county&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x876c5fe2e6306ccd:0xa6b400a73beef706,Denver ,+CO&gl=us&sa=X&ei=o7MaUM1kiuzSAYjKgLAB&ved=0CKQBELYD

It covers

Federal Heights
Northglenn
Thornton
Westminster
http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&hl=en&q=denver+county&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x876c5fe2e6306ccd:0xa6b400a73beef706,Denver ,+CO&gl=us&sa=X&ei=o7MaUM1kiuzSAYjKgLAB&ved=0CKQBELYD

Denver is bounded by:

North - roughly 52nd street (west of I25)

So, since 104th is about 50 blocks away from 52nd, 80234 does not seem to overlap with any part of Denver.

This has caused some issues with buying firearms accessories and services.
a) Some suppliers won't ship mags > 10 rds to this ZipCode
(Actually some told me they won't ship to Colorado because of not being sure what were Colorado laws and which were Denver laws)
b) Centuury Arms would not return my rifle to me directly (they wanted to send it to an FFL outside of 80234) after I sent it to them for repair because I sent in a 30rd mag with it (they required it to be sent in with a mag for testing).

I tried sending a copy of my DL and County Tax Statement to them to prove I was not in Denver...it didn't work.

When I asked the Post Office, they said since 80234 covers a bunch of Denver suburbs, it is called "Denver" to make it simple.

Has anyone else had these problems?
If so, how have you worked around them?

I dunno. I used to live in 80234 (116th and Pecos ish) and about half my mail would say Denver and the other would say Westminster.

Never had any guns at that time though so I can't help ya.

I see this problem all the time- I live in Lakewood, and my zip is 80228, but I'm right near the border with Lakewood/Golden, but it lists me sometimes, depending on where, as being in Denver. I don't get it.

802 is the Denver post office. If you have a problem do a mapquest or google map and send it to the dealer.

Tried sending a map. They say " Google is not a reliable source".
Tried my DL as well.
Tried sending them to the USPS address look-up page: both Denver and Westminster show up. Because Denver shows up, they won't ship.

So then does all the mail come in through Denver, and then get dispersed to the smaller offices like 80234 ?

they're covering themselves from liability. just ship it to a friends house. denver has small chunks of land all over the place.

the home depot at wads and crestline is denver. silverthorne is denver.

You could try using the full zip+4 code as that narrows the location from a geographical segment to the actual block and in some instances, building.
ie: 80234-2763

Zip Codes and Mailing addresses are weird things. I had an Aunt & Uncle that had a house over in Perl Mack (~72nd & Pecos), which was unincorporated Adams Co. Their mailing address was Denver. Later in the 70's they moved to around 74th & Sheridan, on the Westminster side of the Arvada/Westminster boundary. Their mailing address was Arvada.

That does suck W.R.T. the shipping of mags, guns etc.

Good suggestion.

It does not work, though.

From the USPS Zipcode Lookup page, If I enter my street address and the ZIP+4...I get Denver as the city.

You could send all your purchases to my place. I would be happy to let you, the only thing is, is that my mail carrier constantly misplaces packages..........[LOL]

I live on the east side of Wheat Ridge (jefferson county) but have a Denver Zip code because my post office is in Denver on Tennyson. It is not uncommon, for many years we used Denver on our mail address instead of Wheat Ridge.

I would agree that it might not be uncommon, from a historical perspective, but I would hope you might agree that using the zipcode for legal purposes is not completely accurate.

No it's accurate, my zip code is in fact 80212 which overlaps municipalities. However my address in it's current form includes Wheat Ridge instead of Denver to reflect the actual city I live in. The problem lies with what ever info business use to determine legality of sales to other locations. Some have had problems with business saying we can not sell to to because your zip code indicates Denver regardless of the city they actually live in. I believe the last time this came up it was an individual in unincorporated Adams county.

I had success doing the following with 2 suppliers that initially pushed back, claiming that 80234 was part of Denver City/County:

Go to https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction!input.action
Enter your address using Denver as the city
The search will comeback and list Denver as the city
Click on the "Show Mailing Industry Details" link underneath
It will comeback and list the county, such as Adams (not Denver)
Repeat with city being Westminster
It will AGAIN comeback and list the SAME county, such as Adams (not Denver)

These 2 suppliers were nice enough to take time to do that, and changed their minds and shipped "banned" products to me. They said that because the USPS site indicated the county was not Denver, they were "good" sending the items.

YMMV

Haven't encountered this problem yet, I also live in 80234 and I've noticed it depends on who the carrier is on whether or not it says Denver or Westminster.

You do understand that making an argument for where you live vs the zip code you have does you no good at all. I have a Colorado Springs zip code that comes up as Broadmoor or Colorado Springs but I do not live in the city.

The only people that can fix your issue is the USPS and we know how far you are going to get with them.

JB007: Yes, Postmaster of 80234 you need to make another zip code because I am having a hard time getting these high capacity assault clips sent to my home...........[LOL]

80214 shows Edgewater, Wheatridge, Denver and Lakewood... serviced by the Edgewater branch of the post office. Just depends on who's database is used for the information.

+1

Also check the county assessor's site where you live, print out the report showing you do not live in Denver.
