Just curious if anyone can contrast the grip angle and feel of the XDM vs. a 1911. Im in the market for a new pistol and what I want in a 1911 isn't going to be in my budget.

Also, what are XDM's going for? Im looking at a 4.5" 9mm.

Grip angles and width are virtually the same as a 1911. The XD may feel fatter because the grip is the same width all the way across the cross section whereas the 1911 is more like a football in cross section.

Grip angle is very close, one of the reasons I bought mine. Fits my hand well, points for me, and is accurate as heck, runs like a top. I thoroughly enjoy mine.

Bud's has the 4.5" 9mm XDm's for $550 right now. I think I paid like $535 for my 3.8" 40 in January @ Jensen's.

Been a great gun, I really like it a lot. Very accurate for a sub 4" barrel.

And how does the M&P compare to these things?

In stock form the XD and M&P's are creepy and sometimes gritty with a long reset. Most break in the 5-7# range.
With parts such as Springer Precision, Apex or Powder River they still are a bit on the long side but crisp up nicely and the reset shortens up considerably. 3-4.5# typically is what they end up at and it is a huge improvement.
Never what a nicely crafted 1911 will be but definitely workable.
One thing that always struck me about the XD-in the compact and 4" models they always seemed "clunky" and piggish on the top end. the Tactical models seemed to balance much better. The XDM series aren't as bad but still feel a touch clunky. Some of it is because the centerline of the bore sits pretty high in the hand compared to a 1911. Can't say much on the M&P aside from just handling them they seem much better and less piggish on the top end, I have not shot one nearly as much as I have the XD and 1911.
If I was in the market and could not afford a HK I think I would go with the M&P, a little slimmer and sleeker than a XD IMHO.
The only thing that bugs me about the M&P is having to reach into the ejection port to trip the takedown/sear disconnect before you can strip it.
Not a fan of sticking my finger into the ejection port and never been a fan of something you had to use a tool to take down.

I have shot both an XD 40 & XDM 9. I like them both. I personally like the grip and capacity of the XDM better. I usually shoot at 3" targets at 25' with no issues at all. I'd recommend going someplace where you can feel them in your hand. They both shoot the same, just have a different feel. ;)
