Driving home last night, heard a noise that I thought was the tire rubbing the fender. (Over size tires, they sometimes do that.) Didn't think much of it at the time. I am leaving about 10 minutes later and drive by the same spot where I heard the noise and see truck parts in the road.

Something clicks with me and I know it's off of my truck lol... I don't know what this piece is called so maybe somebody could help with that? The pieces actually fit inside eachother, so it's kind of one part.

and here is where it goes:

It looks pretty easy to do so I am thinking auto parts store and a little while under the truck. any tips or ideas?

Oh and I assume I should do both at the same time?

yeah that's what I was thinking.. but then I over thought it... and I was thinking it was something different. edit: the reason I was thinking it was something different was because the truck still drove fine. with replacing the tie rods ends, will I need to re align it?

That's the swaybar endlink. Vatozone calls it a swaybar repair kit. Yes, do both. They're cheap.

I'll be doing a pair today as well. [Beer]

Not a tie rod. The tie rod is in the 2nd photo still there, it goes diagonally through the pic.

What those guys said. If it is a vehicle that you wheel, look into replacing that piece with quick disconnects.

Yeah, but its much easier if you lift both wheels off the ground in the front so the swaybar doesn't load up during installation and make your life difficult.

I had those breaking all the time on a GMC Sierra 2006 I had lifted 6". Every other month i swear!

sway bar disconnects or sway bar connecting rods. many of us with off road trucks/jeeps, install the actual disconnecting models. some guys drive on street with them, but you get squirly.

my wifes truck broke one a couple months ago, she didnt know anything was wrong. then I drove it. it was a 10 minute repair. and only about $20 in parts.

forgive me, cause I should know this.. but disconnecting the sway bars allows for more wheel travel?

if I rub under certain circumstances already, that might not be a great idea for this truck? I wheel probably like 3 to 5 times a year.... not near enough as I should...

The edge was probably present when you went out to test said tires [Coffee]

yes, buy the disconnecting models and you can use it on or off road with max flex.

something like this. although there are many brands and models.

Lucky! Actually I think it broke off, drove for a while, realized it, repaired it. Then a month later broke again, repaired again and then I was good.... Not sure if it broke again or not...[Beer]

I have heard of people not running them at all? is it more of a body roll issue you think? I do have the torsion bars cranked (if you didnt notice that).

edit: aaannnd I just noticed my spelling in the thread title.. nice self... lol

I ran mine with out for a while, I noticed it because when I would hit a bump it would shimmy back and forth real bad. Unless I hit a bump it was fine.... So you can run with out but on the highway it might be a little squishy.....

My buddy has a jeep with no endlinks or swaybar, it's downright scary at highway speed. I can literally rock in the passenger seat and change lanes for him.

If you want to see what it's like without them, just pull the other side and go for a ride. Won't hurt anything. You'll probably rub taking corners at speed.

Yeah I was thinking I might rub more.. leaning towards just putting some more in..

and dang.. that sounds a little sketch being able to change lanes for him lol

it allows the wheels to have more individual articulation

It is fine to run a leaf-sprung vehicle without swaybars. They are kind of useless actually. If you have coil spring suspension they are ABSOLUTELY needed on the front end. Not so much the rear. Just get some quick-discos and you are good to go.

Can you even get quick disconnects for that setup? What make/model is the vehicle? With the limited amount of off roading you do I'd just get standard replacements.

A lot of people go to Ace Hardware and make their own quick disconnects.

it's for a 2000 2500 silverado..

Ok sorry to bring this thread back.. got one of the sway bar endlinks in yesterday, but Im having trouble with the other one.

Seems I cant depress the bushings far enough to get any thread to show out the top to put the nut on there..

any tips?

Jack up that side to compress it.

00tec
08-06-2012, 11:19
Get both front wheels off the ground at the same time. Jacking up one side is essentially trying to twist the truck and the swaybar is trying to untwist it.

Easiest way is to have both wheels off the ground with the suspension unloaded

Ok so first off it's kinda of a pain to jack this truck up to let both wheels hang. but thats ok I can do that.

but wouldnt letting the wheels hang, make the distance further from the sway bar? or its because I already have one side hooked up?

00tec
08-06-2012, 11:45
By having one side compressed, its forcing the swaybar up on the other side, increasing the distance. When you let that side hang, it will pull both sides of the bar down with it.

If its too much of a bitch because the truck is too high you can try it with both sides on the ground and level. As long as both sides of the suspension are in the same state and the vehicle is level, it should be simple to fit it in there.

Gotcha.. I may try that too. I thought it through yesterday, and it seemed like it was level enough to get it in there..
