View Full Version : Wanna Build It For Me?
I have a stripped lower, LPK and furniture. I was going to assemble the lower myself but it looks like it's going to require a few specialty tools that I really don't feel like spending the money to buy since I only plan to build one more rifle after this one is done.
Just wondering if there's anyone out there who likes assembling lowers in exchange for beer or something along those lines..

I put my lower together with a $10 punch kit from Harbor Freight and a $3 brass hammer and a little painters tape.

Hardest part is the front detente pin. There's probably a dozen or more floating around the carpets of my previous home. The rest can be done with pliers, tape, and patience.
If you want to drive up to Windsor on Sunday night, I'd be glad to show you how to put it together.

Some others may disagree but I don't use any specialty tools to install a LPK except maybe my pin punches that are designed for roll pins but I've used regular punches as well. It's not really that difficult and you might enjoy it. Brownells (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=11004/learn/) has a few videos that will show you the basics.

I would be glad to do it for you. You will have the solace of knowing it was done correctly, all torque values adhered to, headspace checked and proffesionally done.
Not slighting any of the other guys in the least, some very competent folks here[Beer]

I'm not, I'm a hack. My brother says you guys are the best. [Beer]

I'll agree with that one. I made myself a special tool. It really makes it easier. [Beer]

I have never checked the headspace on my lowers, how does one go about doing that? [Coffee] [Stooge]
On a serious note, Bert does amazing work, so if you want it professionally done, he's your man.

Likewise, getting the holes evenly spaced on my detent tool was a bitch. The tension spring pin tool wasn't too bad.:)
The only "specialty" tools you will need for an AR lower, besides tape, pin punches, hammer and allen wrenches.

Why the multiple holes, Jim? Just curious. Here is what mine looks like. I made several in case I ever needed to give any away to friends.

I wrote that as a joke. They are 1/4" clevis pins from the hardware store. I have both single & multiple hole ones. It's one of those items you put down then go , where the heck did i leave it? I had turned a piece of nylon rod, then realized (WTHDILI[Bang] ) So off to hardware store for a drill bit. AS i'm wandering the aisles (trumpets) there's a box of clevis pins!
What you do turn 1/4-20 or 5/16 allen heads down?

You and Jim with your fancy tools.......
I just use a feeler guage to hold down the pin / spring and move quickly, only had one pin fly across the room in putting together 4 lowers. So 1 in 4 isn't bad right?[Coffee]
Now removing one is a PITA.
To the OP which ever you decide, not really hard to do with what was listed for basic tools in this thread, i can do most myself as I like to be self supporting, but too technically or need an expert's eye i hand off. If you want a professional, BP can do it to and as you can see highly regarded on here.

It's a 20-45 min job. Bert should do it as he is a lic. smith. I am unable to build anything for anyone. Assisting someone who has questions, that is a different story.
I can do it. But it will require beer. Good Beer. pm me if you still need it done.

If you're uncomfortable take it to Bert then hang out and watch a pro, you'll learn a lot. Money well spent.

We've got at least 2 great gunsmith's on here. Bert@BP and Robb@Bower's. Use either one with confidence if your not comfortable doing your own lower. It's really not that hard to do yourself though. [Beer]
I'm an absolute newbie and built my first lower last night with the tools I had available in my garage - No issues at all....Took about a half hour.

Rob (firemoth) at Bowers Tactical has built everyone of mine. None have had ever issues (even when I have supplied some sub-par components). They're in DTC.
