If I'm trying to run at least 1 mile a day for at least one year, at what distance would a hike count for a run?

I hiked 5 miles today and I'm torn trying to decide if that would count for my run or if only a run of a mile or more would count no matter what else i do during the day.

I'm leaning towards going running but I'd like some other viewpoints.

While both are great for you, running has different physiological effects on the body than hiking has (typically a higher heart rate - closer to the 80% max bpm than hiking has).

Run. If you start justifying reasons not to run then you will quit. Plus when your done running you will feel accomplished and it will take less than 20

5 mile hike? I'd call it good. You won't reach your goal if you over do it and get an injury that nags you or keeps you on the couch for a week. Kinda depends on your fitness level, a 5 mile hike is a warm up to some people.

I had a lot of experience with over-training, once upon a time.

I burn almost as many calories watching the Kardashians as I do running one mile.

How many days have you been doing this so far? I imagine after a few weeks you'll get board with the distance and end up stepping it up. Also is your goal specifically one mile per day, or just 365 miles in a year?

My goal is a minimum of 1 mile each day. I fully expect to run farther than just 1 most days.

I'm just doing it to see if I can finally sack up and finish something I started(I have a big problem with getting bored and bailing) I think it would bring some consistency into my life and make me a bit more serious about some stuff.

That's a tough goal. I know I wouldn't do it. I have similar goal finishing issues as you, and even after five months of scheduled running it was always a battle and I am currently off the wagon.

Do some short distance sprints instead with 30 sec rest in between.

Because of this thread I ran tonight for the first time in a month. Thanks.

Trying to get back on the wagon myself. Went almost 6 weeks without a run and I got flabby fast (I blame a newborn, tons of fast food and my wife craving ice cream and offering me some every time she served herself [ROFL1])

Used to do a 5k barefoot run at least 4x a week, now I'm down to 1.5 miles and it's killing me. Just trying to work my way back up and maybe get a sleeker look while I'm at it (eating better also helps.)

I'm off, gonna try for 2 miles this AM and see if I hold together.

Run. You set the goal, just sack up and do it. [Beer]

So your hand gets the work. I understand. [Coffee]

I know. Everyone was talking about hormones and so forth causing it, by halfway through I called bullshit, she's just eating like crap and I'm choosing to eat like crap right along with her, and not exercising to boot.

Oh well, at least I'm getting back on the wagon, eating less if not better, and taking care of my baby. [Help]

Well I ran last night. I decided I don't want any asterisks on this goal if I'm able to achieve it. Thanks for the ruling guys.

I miss running, which is weird that I got to that point in my life. I just have too many problems with my ankles. I've taken up cycling though, and I love it so far

I've had frustrating experiences at all of the common carriers as well as USPS.

Yup, glad you did it. If you hadn't you would regret it later.

Oh yeah, so last night was my first run in my new neighborhood. I was so excited to have a yard and cool neighbors. Well, it turns out that the reason half my neighbors are armed and outspoken about it, is because there is kind of a lot of crime in the neighborhood. It was kind of uneasy running around last night. Couple of unleashed dogs running at me, groups of teenagers wandering around. I'm already paranoid and mostly think about getting attacked while I run anyway, so living here doesn't really help. I was kind of disappointed. Also, I had a decent amount of open space at the last place, here it is just ALL neighborhood.
