As a cycle rider I give "the wave" to every rider I pass. Most wave back, just an acknowledgement that we're all part of the same community.
Metric bike owners are generally happy to acknowledge and gesture back. Sport bikes, cruisers, Dual sports, Touring, Sport tourers, etc.
Harley riders, in a much larger percentage, do NOT acknowledge anyone not on a Harley.
It's not upsetting or anything touchy feely like that, just makes me think they're dicks.
I ride an American bike now that even has a Harley engine, but since it doesn't fit the traditional Harley Davidson form factor (Buell Ulysses) I get snubbed just as often as I did when I was on my KLR.
I'm curious, since there are several Harley owners on this board. Do you or do you not gesture (when safe of course) and what do you ride?

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU THINK THIS IS A RANT?
What the hell is wrong with dipshits who think that everythink you post is a damn rant, it's fucking ridiculous. EAT SHIT...
and then vote in the poll :D
Better?
Riding metric bikes exclusively I've found that Harley riders with helmets or windshields mostly wave back.

I hadn't even thought of breaking it down to helmet/no helmet etc.
I took my windshield off today because the wind buffets and shakes my head at speeds above 60. I should've stopped waving.

I wave to most riders, only when I physically can't is when I don't. Regardless, if they don't wave back, doesn't ruin my day.
I've thought long and hard about getting a cruiser, even a Harley.....at this point I'm just not man enough to rock one. Guess it's sport only for me

Back in the day everyone waved except the 1% outlaw riders. Today they are less that the 1% and really, who gives a shit if the Hardly Dangerous riders don't wave back. Screw 'em if they don't know the brotherhood is deeper than the brand. F'N poseurs!
Keep waving, the riders that live to ride will wave back, don't worry one bit about the others, they really don't understand anyway.
If you need to ask why I ride, no explanation is possible, if you ride, no explanation is needed.
Live it, ignore the rest.

Also on a Ulysses. Funny, when I rode a Harley, other Harley riders would wave. Now, most don't, but when they pull up next to me and recognize the American Twin engine or the Buell name, they become friendly. I'll return a wave if it's convenient, but I'm not gonna prioritize the gesture above safety. Here's an excerpt from a Buell publication I like:

I've seen threads about this kind of thing on about every kind of discussion forum I've been on, and I never understood it. Just because me and another person are into the same thing, doesn't mean we have some kind of bond.

No explanation is possible.
The wind in your hair, the bugs in your teeth,
Whenever you're riding there's never any grief.
A Honda, a Triumph, a Harley, or Beemer
Whatever you ride, it's your kind of screamer.

You can use that quote for anything. I use that same line for my stance on self-defense and the 2nd Amendment, so it's not as if I don't understand. That being said, I always return waves and other forms of polite actions.

I ride a Harley (and a BMW). I'm not a bike snob...I like them all, regardless of brand. As a matter of fact, in the little group I ride with, it's about a 50/50 split between metrics and Harleys. I don't like people because of the brand of bike they ride.
Having said that, I usually wave, but rarely initiate it. Sometimes I don't. And frankly, it gets a little annoying cruising down a busy road passing bike after bike and feeling obligated to wave. So, yeah...sometimes I have better things to do than wave back to you.
It seems in my experience that sport-bike riders are the least likely to wave. I'd say about 60% to 70% of the Harley riders I pass wave...helmet/windshield or not. Course, most sport bike riders are usually passing me on curves or in no-passing zones because they're always in such a hurry.
Regardless of the "brotherhood" or whatever, I don't get offended if you don't wave. I don't really give a damn if you get offended if I don't wave at you. If that means I'm not a real biker or I "don't get it", so be it.
Like so many other things, I ride to make me happy...not anyone else.
I don't wave, I don't know you, I ride pretty much alone unless I'm with my boys.

You should never get mad about a missed wave back ESP if they are busy riding the bike ,.

If someone doesn't wave at first, you should try waving your 1911 at them to see if they share your other favorite hobby.

I certainly condone the Jeep wave and have no issues with it I was merely mocking the idea of this thread. Everyone has different opinions regarding if they want to wave or not. If you're into waving, then wave. If you're not, then don't wave. If you ride your Lazy Boy on wheels (Harley) and think you are tough shit down at the local bar and are too cool to wave then so be it.

Well I think this response proves that they're not waving because they are dicks. It just floors me that a grown human being would actually think like that. Oh and Badger...whether you like it or not you ARE a part of the motorcycle community. Just like you're a part of the CO AR-15 community. Just like you're a part of the Bailey, CO community. Would it kill you to at least be cordial to someone who is in the same community as you? Man...you and Jim need to get together and talk about how much you hate your fellow man, how stupid people are who know less than you and how macho you guys are for not forming any type of personable traits in your personality.
OT though...I've even been behind a Harley on the road and a Harley will be coming the other way and wave at the first guy and then intentionally not wave at me. Now I know it's not all Harley riders, just like I know that not all non-Harley riders are nice people either. But it just seems like the majority of Harley riders want nothing to do with non-Harley riders. Pretty elitist of them, but to each his own.
I guess some people just are dicks at heart...
Kanekutter, it starts with just waving, then all of the sudden it is, "I was broken down on the side of the road on my Heritage Softtail when some guy driving an F-150 Harley edition drove by and didn't even stop to load my bike and take me home for free! I thought we were all a community?!"
I've always ridden Harleys, but honestly, I'd always wave at other riders or return their wave. I never did the "snob" thing, but I would always let the conditions determine whether I'd wave or not. Sometimes a quick wave is easy, but other times I didn't see theirs in time, or I was changing lanes, or there was heavy traffic, or in a sharp turn, etc.
It's not always safe or easy to give a wave, and those people wouldn't get a return wave. Nothing about being a dick, it was all about what I was doing at that instant and how important my attention and concentration was at that moment. I'll always be polite to other riders, but I'll never compromise my own safety to do so. That's what it boils down to, IMO, and people who get offended at being "snubbed" should consider that it may not have actually been a snub. Although it quite often is, sad to say.
I have to admit though, that I do tend to giggle when I see some guy on one of those Japanese Harley-clone bikes with tall apehangers, leathers, cutoffs and patches, trying his damnedest to look like a real bad-ass 1%'er and acting all tough-guy I'ma kick-yo-ass bad mo-fo. I gave up all that "biker regalia" shit 30 years ago. Hell, I won't even wear Harley t-shirts anymore. I have no need to try and impress any-damn-body. When I rode, it was for me and my comfort and my pleasure, not to go out profiling or chest-thumping. But those guys are good entertainment.
Sadly, I don't know if I'll ever ride again. After the lumbar surgeries I've had, I'm just very leery of the risk. If I hit a hard bump or pothole in a damn car, it brings tears to my eyes from the pain. Just thinking of shocks to the spine while on a bike scares the shit out of me. Maybe after a year or two it'll heal up enough to not be a problem, but right now, NFW.

I posted that example because I have seen it before. It was on a 2nd generation Integra forum. Wow. Some very rude drivers, bike or no.
Out here the country everyone waves at everybody, whether you know them or not.
Not waving back is considered very rude. So it driving past someone who is broken down.
Out here where we rely on others and you neighbor, not waving or helping a broken down motorist is a great way to end up on everybody's "dick" list.
For those that have lived in the city their whole life and don't get this just realize you probably won't get help on the side of the road as you wait and wonder why nobody stops to help you.
As far as Harley rider's waving... aren't they usually just broken down and asking for help? Sorry, not a HD fan... more the opposite.

Even if I know them I probably won't wave because I'm not looking at other riders or the bike their on, I'm on my ride enjoying myself, I didn't head out for a wave and acknowledgment. Now if we met in a bar or a local stop with a bunch of bikes, I would say "Hi" and not ask what you rode first, I don't care. Its like riding with someone you don't know, I would NOT ride next to them until we've ridden together for a while. I don't know how they ride and react so I would not expect them to know what I would do either, so I won't ride next to them and don't care if they are offended. "Brother" is another thing that bugs the shit out of me, especially with other Harley riders. We have not fought side by side in a bar or in the service, you have not bailed me out or helped in a personal situation that I or he was in to deep to get out alone. That is reserved for those people, not every asshole on a Harley.
So no, I don't wave, I do ride Harleys, and I am not a dick and those that think so are narrow minded and only remember some guy on a Harley didn't wave back, oh my, what a dick!
By the way, I voted I like pie.

If you'd bother to have fully read and understood the poll options you MIGHT have a slight idea of why the hell I posted the way I did.
Option 1: I ride a Harley and I wave.
Option 2: I ride a Harley and you don't, bugger off!
Options 3-6 are irrelevant.
Do you not see how the OP already has it in his pea brain that if you ride a Harley and you don't wave its because the other rider is NOT on a Harley? And thus they are somekind of dicks because of it... Did I REALLY have to spell that out for you?
It has not one god damned thing to do with being cordial. People wave all the time, if I don't know them, I typically figure they thought I was someone else, a simple case of mistaken identity, and just go about my business. There's no elitist mindset to it at all. While I've made it very clear I'm not exactly a people person, I can assure you there are quite a few people in this very forum whom I've met and I'd wager they'd likely agree I can be a very civil, if not a pleasant person. But most if not all who take the time to know me will also tell you I maintain an EXTREMELY low tolerance for bullshit.
As far as helping, I've stopped for many riders on the side of the road but I'll say right now that sometimes such an act can be a double edge sword. Many times you stop and they're fine, just stretching legs, waiting for others to meet up, bike is too hot, or maybe they genuinely need a little assistance and you can be helpful. But I've stopped before and ended up sitting in cuffs on the back of a state cruiser while my info was being checked out. My appearance was apparently cause for alarm. When you hear "We don't want any trouble!" before you can even ask the question of whether or not they need help, it kind of makes you stop and go "huh?". My stopping freaked this guy's ol lady out and she immediately dialed 911. Long hair, tattoos, and certain patches apparently scare the hell out of some people. Sometimes minding one's own is just a better way to help have an enjoyable day.

I feel completely vindicated. After Badger's last couple of posts I'm pretty sure I can no longer win the "Biggest Shithead on the Forum" title.
Maybe I should start my own poll to find out.

Badger
I know you, you're my cousin. Same family, long on hello, short on bs.Tattoo's, long beard, no patches [lifetime far, far away]. They put you in cuffs? wow i got guns drawn, gently placed in the prone position, then tossed in the car and carted off.

I have allways ridden a harley. 6 in the last 20 years.
I never wave at anyone. I dont know you, we are not friends. Just because you have a loan on a bike, doesnt mean we are brothers. I dont wave at every dumbass in a car. Whats the difference?
Actually, I occasionally wave. Out here if you are alone and I will probably wave. I will wave at people local to me. In my truck, or on my bike. Once I get to the city, no more for sure.
I really hate it when you go to Sturgis, and dumbasses want to wave. Damn, there are 8 quadrillion bikes, do we need to get a rotator cuff injury by waving at a damn rally?
But, its not because I ride a harley, that I dont wave. Its because I am an antisocial A-hole.
This....Exactly my sentiments. No time to wave when you are dodging idiots on the road.....

OK...that's just bullshit. If I happen to be paying attention to some dumbass cage driver that's trying his damnedest to kill me and don't feel like jeopardizing my already compromised safety to wave to you, it's not being rude. It's being a smart rider.
Or maybe I've chosen not to wave because, big surprise, there's other things out there in the world to pay attention to besides you and your waving little hand. Maybe I didn't see you. Maybe I'm looking at the instruments on the bike. Maybe I'm watching the deer on the side of the road that you didn't see because you're too busy waving to all your "brothers".
If your little butt hurts because of that then you need to reassess your priorities while riding.

I rode sport bikes (had 2 stolen, the other I sold to start saving $$$ and it got stolen from the buyer 3 days later lol, they found it in mexico the next week amazingly) and in Cali, 98% of everyone waved back, including the harley riders. When someone didn't wave back, they were usually a harley rider, fat, old, with long grey hair and a "F you, sportbike rider" attitude. They'd stare at you and not wave. Real tough!

Lot of "sensitive" members. Don't wave, your just plain rude and a meany. We should know what kind of vehicle you drive, this way we can wave at everyone. If not would we be rude? Really, what age demographic are you in?
Look either you do or don't wave, flip off or just ignore another rider. I see one on the side of the road i slow down, or pull over if they need assistance. I've never been bent out of shape because someone didn't wave to me. 38 years in the saddle and i don't sweat the light shit.

Furthermore, you apparently didn't read the entire thread. Or maybe you can't comprehend what others are saying. Like this:
Having said that, I usually wave, but rarely initiate it.
If you can't understand that someone might not wave for a variety of reasons you're not a safe rider. Or a smart rider. Or maybe you're just too close-minded to even attempt to see the other side of an argument.

I believe I mentioned that if it could be done safely. That pretty much means, open road no traffic, not in a corner, etc. I probably won't wave in town because I'm busy watching for someone to try to turn into me or in front of me.
I took a quick little 100 mile ride today. Only passed a dozen or so bikes, twisty road, mostly harleys, no waving going on except for chicks on the back seat. and the one guy on a metric.
The poll selection about Harleys was tongue in cheek btw, but I guess some people have it in their pea brains that I don't like Harley riders.
Not that anyone gives a crap, but I cut my street teeth on a Harley. I was just trying to find out if I should wave or not if I ever put it back together, and I guess I now know the answer. :D

Wishing someone wrecks because they don't agree with you, not to mention your implying older folks should have their guns taken away confirms (to me) you are the typical anti gunner who mask their true identity.
This forum has confirmed (to me) that there are some gun owners which I have absolutely zero interest in associating with.

Nice truck. I'll wave at ya. I wave all the time. I like to wave. Waving is fun. I'd rather ride or shoot than wave. Maybe I will ride, shoot and wave. Shouldn't be too hard, I used to ride a HD that I could work the clutch, throttle, shift, brake and operate the turn signal all at the same time and still manage a wave if needed.

...whether you like it or not you ARE a part of the motorcycle community. Just like you're a part of the CO AR-15 community. Just like you're a part of the Bailey, CO community. Would it kill you to at least be cordial to someone who is in the same community as you?
damn. I never knew I was part of so many communities. I came across a couple guys, one was wearing Levi's (like me), and the other was wearing Soloman hiking boots like mine. Since I learned here that I'm part a of each of their communities, I knew I had to wave at both, but which takes precedence? Shit, then a guy with a beard walked by, and then there were several people walking dogs. I didn't have enough hands for all the waving. I'm sure I hurt everybody's feelings, since I'm such an integral part of all these communities, sharing a deep, brotherly bond with all of them.
Gimme a break. If you seriously, automatically include yourself in a "community/brotherhood" with folks just because you own or do the same thing, you don't understand the value or meaning of true brotherhood, and will be sorely disappointed one day. As for me, I'll stick with my fellow Marines for my brotherhood.

gotta throw my two cents in...
two short stories. I have been riding (up till about 2 years ago) for about 10 years. mainly sporties. it's pretty well known that harley guys dont wave. i still always waved and usually caught an awkward wave back. just a little weird.... motorcycling is a brotherhood. we need to be looking out for eachother.
secondly, my folks live in unincorporated parker. Ponderosa hills. as soon as the pavement ends, I wave at EVERY passing car. 90% wave back. the other ten percent either drive a prius or didnt see me. I mean that literally, there is some guy who owns a prius back there that I have waved at EVERY time I see him. never a wave back..
liken it to an old school way of doing business. if it was a small town, you didnt have to KNOW everybody to wave. that's the way parker was when I got here. I liked it. I continue to do that when I get a little further out of downtown parker. as our communities grow, I like to think that there are still groups of people that can relate. if I were to see a "co-ar15" sticker on a truck, I would wave, or say hi or something. even though i wont know who it is....
that guy that doesnt wave.... i dont know him.. doesnt make him not a dick..

do I have to know somebody to give them a head nod in the grocery store as I walk by? nope.. do I? yup. do I say excuse me if I walk in front of somebody? yup...

I will share another short story. (Im full of em today lol)
My father was an airline pilot, and he had this co-pilot that he flew with for awhile that was just awesome. Couldnt say enough good about him. When my dad retired, this co-pilot came out to my folks house for the retirement party... Well he shows up, and none of us besides my dad had met him. This huge (ripped) black guy, on a harley, wearing an American flag leather vest...
It was awesome. I had just gotten my first bike, a little honda F2 and I was all proud. Well I was half kidding and didnt realize what a no-no it was, but I asked to ride his bike.
He goes,, "sure.. but if you wreck I'll kill you".
well I was kidding, so I was like, "no no man.. I dont really want to bla bla etc."
he goes "you asked... now get on the bike..." lol...
I was terrified, rode it around the block super slow and brought it back unscratched. I was like, "well if you want to ride mine, you can"
"no thanks"....
LOL.. hahaaha
Anyway, he taught me some stuff about motorcycling that day. it was him who first told me to respect other riders, and to consider it a brotherhood.

I ride a Harley. I will typically wave back at anyone who waves at me no matter what they are riding however I don't initiate because I think it's dumb. I will not return the wave to anyone when it doesn't make sense...like when I am in the middle of a hard turn rolling down 126 near Pine for example. Who the F thinks waving is more important than controlling the bike through the turn and over the gravel on the road? Apparently lots of people do. I ride to get to where I am going (and have fun doing it) not to socialize by waving at everyone else.
Someone here said you are part of the riding community if you like it or not...like being part of the Bailey "community" or CO AR15. Riding might be a "community" but CO AR15 is a club. I will wave at someone who is sporting our club's colors in the form of a sticker on their car but I am not going to wave at everyone who lives in the Littleton community just because I do...and that goes for the riding "community" too.

It's astounding that you think all bikers should wave no matter what the situation.
I am as far from the outlaw biker mentality as one can be. I have never been in trouble with the law, I don't wear leather, don't care what you ride, have NEVER stopped at a "biker" bar or any other bar while riding (I like to be stone cold sober while I ride) and don't think I am part of some biker club that I have to wave at every other biker.
You may think riding is part of your image but it is not part of mine. I ride to so I can have a fun way to get from point A to point B...not so people notice me. Two people on bikes crossing paths does not make them a family. The simple fact that two people ride is not anything close to being a brotherhood. I know that even though I am not a vet.

So you're talking about Jiu-Jistu then right? You must mean HELIO Gracie, and I'm also sure you mean you learn Jiu-Jitsu in a Gracie BJJ system. I also haven't fought yet because I don't have the time to train to the level I want to in order to fight. But you're right, and I must apologize. ...because posting pictures of yourself with a motorcycle proves you ride...
...as opposed to proving that you post pictures on the internet.

I spent a good year of my life without a car lol...
out in HI, I rode everyday no matter what. The wife had the car. HI is tropical.. read: rain. everyday.
There was a stretch out there where it poured for 42 days.. we called it biblical lol.. I was on that bike every day in that rain lol...

In response, we've got pics of bikes (with claims of riding them... i can only assume while typing these posts?)
There are plenty of pictures of rifles and targets (Ipad at the range, right?)
So, how about that screwin bit? I wanna see some pictures of cored out cantaloupes and "pocket pals"

No, I didn't think of that one! I was 21 at the time, of course when she called me telling me that they recovered my bike and that I needed to bring a pickup I wasn't really thinking about getting laid, I was more thinking "Shit! It's probably all busted up!"

The assertion was MEANT to suggest that posting pics of bikes and rifles versifies that you ride or shoot to the same extent that showing your porn collection proves you get laid.
