I was driving toward Nederland the other day and was on the last straightaway before you get to town, on the north end. It was a torrential downpour. I had my headphones on, listening to the Mike Rosen podcast.

I see a blinding flash to my right and an immediate BOOOOOOOOOM! that scared the shit out of me, even with the headphones on. A treetop maybe 30 yards into the woods just exploded. Branches flew off of it in all directions.

I never saw that before. So cool, but a little freaky too.

Lightening is a scary and fascinating beast. Seen a lot of it this season.

We had a lightening strike tree catch fire above us last week. It had smoldered for a couple of days and POOF.

Watched it hit a few trees and a pile of hand tools when I worked for the Forest Service.
Incredible power in that phenomenon.

when i was about 8 years old (that was a long time ago) we were running in from the horse pastures because a rain storm with lots of lightning had rolled in,

as i approached our front porch a bolt hit right in front of me, so close was the strike that it knocked me off my feet almost like i had been tackled from the front as i ran.

Saw lightning hit a power transformer on a pole once, at a good distance away thankfully. That was cool! Green shit foaming everywhere.

Last night I went to my parents house for a family dinner. They live on about 10 acres. Lightning hit the neighbor's property and started a brush fire. It was about 20 square feet.

My brother and I ran over and needless to say, that fire could not handle 190lbs of THIS MAN.

When I went To Philmont Boy Scout Ranch ( Northern New Mexico ) in 92 we had a lightning strike hit a tree about 50 yards away from us. I got hit with tree splinters from it.. crazy loud

I was there in '76. We got caught in a hail and lightening storm while heading up the Tooth of Time ridge. No fun.

You were dreaming, and since you were listening to Mike Rosen as you drifted off, then it only makes sense that the lighing bolt represented the republican party and the tree was the dems. Premonition maybe?

Gotta like the Rosen show. [Beer]

similar to what rockhound said, when I was a kid, walking home from elementary school, it was a fierce storm, turned the corner and zap-BOOM! Lightning nailed the tree I just walked past... Needless to say I ran the rest of the way home!!!

Fascinating stuff!

Cool stuff huh.

Try being outside the car at 50 feet operating a theme park ride (Spider) at Elitches in 1987 when it hits the large cottonwood tree and strikes the all metal (Spider) ride that I'm holding on too, ok was holding on too until it knocked me off.

Sucky night. :)

During the news report about the folks getting hit at the race they said that you have a 1 in 10,000 chance of getting hit by lightening in your life.

Man, I thought it was WAY higher than that. Maybe they missed a zero?
