View Full Version : Android or iPhone for mom?
I am going to get a smartphone for my mom. I got her an android tablet and she likes that. We've never had Apple products. However I've read iPhones are more intuitive for the retired folks...
Most people I've talked to that recommend the iPhone haven't used anything else.
I plan to play with the apple at the store tonight before I make up my mind.
Honestly I don't think its a huge deal either way. What color is probably a bigger deal... haha
Thoughts?

Buy a droid if she's comfortable with that platform.
Plus i heard its rude if you don't wave at the iPhone users, and do you really want your mom waving at hipsters?
I would say it all depends on how tech savvy she is. My mom is pretty quick with computer stuff (she initially taught me everything I knew about computers when I was younger). My dad on the other hand... not so much. He knows email and web browsing and the learning curve was rough when he got his Android phone. I would recommend, just based on her tablet experience, the Android system... the uninitiated will find some things harder with Apple just because of the "oversimplification" factor that apple uses to approach their stuff, or it'll be really easy for them.
Buy a droid if she's comfortable with that platform.

[ROFL1] Nice! I used to have an iPhone and I never wave... I guess I'm a rude asshole. [Coffee]

I've had both and they both have their merits. I liked Android because...well...it's not Apple. I've currently got an iPhone because my wife and I can have everything synced together easily. I don't even have to ask her what we're doing anymore, it just pops up on my phone now [Coffee]
iPhone is definitely more intuitive though. You really can't go wrong either way though.

I've used both and currently have an android (got a really good deal on an HTC Thunderbolt!) but i would recommend the iPhone for older folks. Both of my parents have them and what most people say about them is true: they are much more intuitive and easy for "non-tech" people to use them. My mom has had hers for about 2 months and sent me her first text message ever last month. Then about two weeks later she sent me her first picture message.
Now she is constantly sending me pictures of everything... [Roll1]

I'm an iPhone guy, and I absolutely love it.
However, as was already pointed out, if she is familiar with an android platform (meaning the tablet) I would bet an android phone would be super simple for her to get used to.
My dad is a real computer guy (got a Commodore Pet in 1977) I was 5 and remember it well... Mom, not so much, the tablet has been everything she wants and needs in a computer. Dad can't see shit anymore with his cataracts so I don't think he'll use the phone much.
An android phone would make all the syncy things pretty simple so it appears on the phone or tablet automagically.
Buy a droid if she's comfortable with that platform.

Would I have to buy her a Prius to go with the iPhone? And then wave at all those folks too?

Yes then have to relocate her I boulder. It's obvious that the android is the more financially responsible decision. [ROFL1]

Ok first off who you callin a hipster [Tooth]
Second is she technology inept? if so I would suggest the iphone, if she knows about tech and is ok with learning about it on her own then Android gives you the most options in apps (and hacks).
BTW I love Prius Drivers.....They let me make my carbon foot print bigger when I drive by @ 80 mph in my gas guzzling F150.
Might wanna start this as a poll IMHO

One benefit of the "Apple Tax" is the free workshops (http://www.apple.com/retail/learn/) that you can attend.

Does your mom think she's better than everybody else? Then get the iPhone. If she's a normal person, get a droid.

That's actually attractive, but the nearest apple store to them is over an hour away.

No one waves and windoze fans.
I think you are probably joking? I have had windows mobile on a bunch of GPS units. I wanted to launch them from my clay thrower and give em both barrels.

There is also a benefit to staying with the android/google-verse for syncing contacts, bookmarks, and having consistency with purchased apps.
One caveat: The UI on the new phone will probably differ from her tablet, as most carriers muck things up with their own "improvements" (Sense, blur, etc...). Plus most of the tablets aren't running the latest version of Android, unless you bought her a Nexus 7.

personally after hearing that the new iphone 5 will not be backwards compatible with any current iphone hardware and you will have to upgrade to use it, i will never own an apple product.
new adapters, new usb, wont fit into your i home or other i phone/ ipad play systems, total BS the only reason to do that is to force you to spend more money to use the system.
the company just isnt happy making a good product better they have to reach into your pocket again.

Easy call for me - iPhone.
Last year I fell into the South Plate river with my iphone 4. It still worked but I thought it wasn't getting as good of a reception. I brought it to the Apple store and they checked it out and told me that the phone must have gotten wet (really?). But they gave me a new phone without any questions. I had that for about a month (splash!). I came back to the Apple store with my mostly working iPhone. This time I confessed that the phone got wet. They checked my account and said I was a longtime customer and they game me another iPhone! I'm a customer for life and love my iPhone 4s with my friend Siri. Anytime you need any help there's an Apple store nearby with knowledgeable staff. I'll never go back to buying from a phone store.
PS - I stay away from water now.

Android is cheaper, iPhone iOS is easier to use. I prefer the XD ;)

I almost bought the HTC one X today and didn't cause I wanted to wait for the iPhone 5 but if the above is true I'm going back to buy the HTC.
