View Full Version : Are you more 'aware' of your surroundings when you got a CC licence?
Just wondering given the consequences, if most people become more aware of where they are and who is around them.
Nope.
+1.. I think.
I don't think that having a cwp instantly makes you 'aware'. It's not something that just happens. You are either aware of your surroundings or you aren't.
I know people who carry and are clueless when I point something out, but they're learning to pay attention.
The gf the other day forgot to carry when comin over.. at a stop light she noticed someone walking through the intersection BEHIND all the cars, she thought shit, then moved to lock her doors.. not sure why she didn't see him to begin with.. again it doesn't make you aware.. it's not an innate ability. Situational awareness comes with practice. [Tooth]

I'm more aware of the need to pull my shirt down when standing up.
I'm aware of new and terrified looks when in-laws get in close for a hug.
I'm aware of how low my pants can be pulled down when I'm crapping in a public restroom stall...

I obtained a CCW years ago because of my awareness. In NY i could only have a target permit, we moved before my app for actual concealed was in the works.

+1 for all of those!
No, not really. I've always been very aware and "spatial", if you will. My natural instinct to pay attention to my surroundings was a large part of why I have a ccw to begin with, not the other way around. However, like RustyCrusty said, there are certain things that you definitely do become more aware of after you've begun carrying concealed... but general surroundings wasn't really one of them for me at least. If anything changed or improved for me, it was probably a slight increase in tolerance and politeness.

+1 Noticed the same thing I am much less confrontational and more apt to walk away.

This sums up my opinion as well. [Beer]
I agree with all that was said here. SA (That's situational awareness) can be instilled in people, but I got a lot of that from my .mil experience. I have become more "aware," if you will, of my attire- I don't shop for clothes that hurt my ability to conceal anymore. [Tooth]

Agreed with all!

This really hits it for me. I have found that I am much more aware of what I say/gesture to others.

+1 to the above. I'm 100% more self-aware, but not really more surroundings aware. That part was well in place years before, after lots of practice.

My pulse goes up a bit around Denver cops, Boulder too. Funny cause I carried for years out in the open. I had a badge and uniform then. Just hold your head up high I guess.
