View Full Version : How big of a Deep Freezer should I get
I am looking at getting a deep freezer to store my meat in, but I don't know how big of one I should get. I have hunting tags for Deer, elk and pronghorn. Any one with any sugestions?

The biggest one your generator will handle. You may want to think about a co2 backup as well.
Just my WAG, but I'd say the biggest one you can support as far as space and power, if you plan to fill it with game and maybe commercial meat as well.
And personally, I'd prefer an upright over a chest type, but that's just me. I don't like bending over into those things and digging around for stuff that's got a bunch of other things piled on top of it. But I also have back issues.

In hindsight I would have to agree with this logic. I bought a chest freezer two years ago, and it is great, except when I actually fill it with anything. There has been several times now that I looked for something and literally could not find it without taking everything out. Or sometimes I think that I am out only to find it 6 months later when I am looking for something else.
Also get a big one like everyone else has stated, it just makes life easier in the long run.
I have one of each. Bought one new, then found another on craigs list. The upright is more friendly, but every time you open it the temp rises signifantly. And my buddy says stay away from frost free, freezer burn.
For multiple animals I'd look into commercial freezer space. Hudson meat locker?
-just like a gun safe, figure how big you think you need....then double that size.
I am in the market for a freezer as well (stand up -- I remember being a kid and always trying to find stuff at the bottom of my grandparents deep freeze).
So where is the best place to buy one. Anyone know of any good deals on a 20+ cubic foot one?

I bought the largest upright that Sears had. I used to have a chest freezer, and it worked great. But it was a pain to get things when it was full.
There's a place over on Evans, north side of the street a couple (?) blocks west of Quebec. Can't remember the name, Scratch and Dent Appliance Outlet or something like that, where I've gotten the last couple garage appliances I bought when I lived up there. They have some really good prices, and sometimes they'll have stuff you wouldn't believe. They usually have a decent selection.
