View Full Version : Pueblo Wednesday Afternoon Steel Matches
Current as of Feb 2023.
Back again this year starting in April Pueblo West Sportsmans Assn will once again put on Steel matches on every Wednesday afternoon/evening. April-ish thru mid Oct.
The match staff, Teri, Rod, Carl, Charlene and myself will get there around 3:30 to start setting up. Shooting starts as early as we can get it set up, usually no later than 4:15.
You, the shooter, can show up whenever you want after 3:30 till about 5:30-5:45. As long as you get started by 6:00, we can get you finished up before dark. Keep in mind it gets dark early in April and Sept go plan accordingly.
If you are going to arrive after 5:30, please contact match staff to let them know that you are on the way. If everyone is done, we tear the match down.
To shoot the whole match only takes 45 or so minutes although last summer one guy shot all four stages in under 15 minutes.
You shoot each of the 4 stages a few times and we throw out your worst time. A mulligan of sorts.
Minimum round count is 80 rounds. Bring 125-150 or so and as many mags as you own.
Divisions will again be; Open, Iron Sight (Limited,) Revolver, Optic Sight Rimfire Pistol, Iron Sight Rimfire Pistol, Pistol Caliber Carbine, Rimfire Rifle and Shotgun.
Calibers allowed are pretty much any centerfire pistol caliber from 32 to 45. Shotguns can use lead birdshot only. No steel, buck or slug. Rimfires must be 22 LR only.
Small of the back holsters, ankle holsters and shoulder holsters are not allowed. In the Waistband (IWB) is allowed.
You can enter as many divisions as you bring ammo and guns for.
Its only $10 for the first division you shoot in and $5 for each additional. Same with family members. First guy pays $10, each additional family member pays $5.
Some of the stage diagrams are avail here. http://steelchallenge.com/sc-world-match/stages/
Others will be designed by the match staff that same day. Never the same is our plan.
Get out there and try it. Your first match is free.

I'll be there every week again this year. Thanks for all the effort and time you put into setting up these matches.
The steel challenge matches are by far the best bang for your buck of any match I've ever shot. I spend a lot more time shooting and a lot less time standing around at the steel matches.
great match as always. now that we are warmed up can we use the tejas star next time lol.
Holy crap I had fun yesterday. Low key, go at your own pace, 3 chances on every stage, and shoot whatever you want.
This might turn into a regular thing. I'm just going to have to pack all of my gear the night before.
I had a good time. Thanks again Hoser for putting on the match.
Thanks Hoser for putting these matches on. They are fun and I have learned alot in the two I have attended. I wish I could get there earlier to help setup, but I can't get away from work.

Good fun tonight. Thanks for keeping this stuff going.

These matches are a great, low stress way to break into competition shooting if you're new to it. They're much more low key than say, a USPSA match.
Man up and get out there!
Great evening down in Pueblo. Shooting steel is way too much fun. Thanks Hoser for putting on such a fun match.
My first time shooting steel, or any kind of shooting competition. Was a ton of fun, met some really nice people too. Had several other new(-ish) shooters all together. I did alright, only one string that was really lousy. I actually shouted a profane question. And the string just after it was flawless, naturally. Realized that no one else was shooting from concealment so I got rid of the over shirt for my last round.
Tons of fun, I'll be out there next Wed!

is this basicly just for .22s?

You can basically bring anything you want, as long as its not a centerfire rifle ie. .223,5.56,.308 etc etc, Pistol Caliber Carbines ARE allowed.

And shotguns. I shot the iron site class with my 38 super. There was everything from .22 carbines to open race guns. I did ask Hoser about the shotgun class and as long as you are using birdshot you can play with anything.
A note on the carbines. 9mm and .45 and most American cartridges will be fine. We did decide that my carbine would be a bit much. (7.62X25) as it runs 1700fps.
Good people and a good time.

Hey Curtis,
Just seen the results from Wed. nite, you might want to think about a different gun, the women are kicking your ass
Charlene
.
Sigh I try a different gun and this is what I have to deal with
That might very well be the funniest thing I have ever read on this forum.
It is bad enough being beat by a girl, but to have a girl rub it in. Priceless.
Where else can you shoot, spot paint your car and go fishing after the match.

Ok guys, I've just sent the results from the match to higher (Hoser) they should be sent as soon as he's not beating a fire to ashes. Also note sorry for getting the results out so late, but please, please, PLEASE add up your times per stage. The last couple weeks I've had a ton (I wish I was joking..) of un-added scores sheets. I have a really short fuse when it comes to paperwork, the only saving grace is that my shredder isn't by my computer.. I promise if all the scoresheets get added up, results will come out quicker.

'Cause Frank, Jamie, and Phil didn't show up, and Hoser didn't shoot rifle.

I won't post a name, and you can't really ID the person from the photo, but I don't have an email address to send you the original if you want it.
THE LEAST YOU COULD DO IS PRETEND THE SHOTGUN HAS RECOIL. Notice the position of the bolt handle and the hull just peeking over the top of the receiver.

Hope to try this next week with the shotgun (9mm is getting hard to replace). This week was a bust with work and the fact that I'm driving to CRC tmrw AM for Noveske.
The temps tomorrow are supposed to be marginal, but the wind will make it not that much fun. Tomorrow is a cancel.
See you all next week.
Totally, completely, utterly jealous. We need something like this at CRC. Mid-week match that involves loud noises and objects that outweigh the vituperations I'm normally expelling at high velocity by Wednesday...
Is it possible to go check this event out in person? I'm not a member of the range but would like to see what it is all about etc.

We had a couple people show up around 5:45-6:00 and they still got the whole match completed in plenty of time. We can shoot right up until 30 minutes before dark.

How late in the year do you think you'll have these Hoser?
How late in the year do you think you'll have these Hoser? I'm probably moving down that direction in September/October.
We run them to the end of Sept and then start them up again in April. It gets dark too early in the winter to keep them going.

So obviously a GREAT big thank you to the folks that make it happen and for hanging around to get the last squad through.

Cool. I plan to head down right after work. What's latest time to get there -- still before 1800?
Yup. 530-600 is about as late as you can get there and not worry about darkness stopping your shooting.
We have to be done shooting 30 minutes before sunset.
Gah, looks like I'm stuck at work. Maybe I'll just flex some time next week.

We don't have a minimum age. Its up to you as a parent to decide that that age is.
Looking forward to seeing you again. Its been a while. Maybe 9-10 years...

Thanks to everyone who helps put this match on. My son and I had a great time this afternoon. We will be back for sure. It was a great first match for my 9 year old son.
Also thanks to the two gentlemen we shot with. Not sure if you guys are on here. But I really appreciate shooting with us and making my sons first competition a fun and safe time.

Thanks guys. It means a lot. It has taken a lot of work that I cant take credit for. I have an amazing staff that makes it all happen. I am just the pretty face.
Going to do it again today. We will run matches till 17 October or so.
Only a couple matches left for the 2019 season.
With the temps tomorrow not even making it into the 50s we are going to cancel.
Next weeks match will be the last of 2018.
Game on for tomorrow. The last match of 2018.

Yup. I think Rags and I started this madness in 2004 or 2005.
Just contacted Hoser, these matches are a go starting in April. He'll supply details soon.
O2
Just under two weeks and we start up again.
Same same. Start setting up around 3:30 and we start shooting as soon as it is set up.
As long as you show up by 5:00-5:30 we can get you shooting.
See you there.
Next Wednesday. Hump day.
Be there.
We had more than a few brave people come out for yesterdays match. The weather near the range looked crappy, but it turned out to be a really nice afternoon/evening for shooting steel.
Thanks to everyone that comes out early to set things up and/or stays late to tear it all down. Without people helping out matches like these cant survive.
Results went out a little bit ago, let me know if you didn't get them.
See you next week.

Plan to come down for it @ some point : )
I would like to try this out. It is my understanding that rimfire pistol is shot from low ready, is this correct? How many mags do most people have? Also, please PM the gate code. Thank you very much!

Correct. Rimfire pistol/rifle and PCC all start low ready.
Bring a minimum of 3 mags.
PM headed your way.
Got it! Thank you. Can't come out today but I will be out there soon.
Today is a cancel. The weather is rapidly going in the crapper.
What day is it?

Only 2 matches left.
We officially pull the plug on 16 Oct.
Game on again today.

If this crappy weather hangs around we wont shoot tomorrow.? If the forecast temps are in the 50s or above *and* the range isnt muddy, we will do it.
I will send out a go or no-go email tomorrow around noon.
Today is a cancel for snow and mud.
Last weeks scores? Wife thinks I was messing around.
Last weeks scores? Wife thinks I was messing around.
They already went out. I will resend you a copy.
Your lovely bride isnt wrong....
got them, Thanks. I'm trainable.
Today is a cancel for stupid high winds. Hard to shoot a match when the steel targets are being blown over.
And with that, the steel season is a wrap. Even with the covid madness, we still got in a solid 3 months of shooting and hanging out with friends. Thank you to everyone that helps out. Everything from getting early to help set up, stays late to help tear down, does scores, runs a timer, ect. It takes a lot of work to pull it off and I could not do it without everyones help.
Next years steel will start up on 7 April. The Regional Steel Challenge will be held on 28-29 May (Memorial Day weekend) and the Regional Rimfire Match will be 25-26 June.
As of right now the weather looks really nice to start out the 2021 season.
We start setting up around 3:30 and start shooting as soon as it is ready.
If you are going to be later than 5:30, please be sure to call us so we dont tear the stages down.
Dont forget, these matches take work to put on. From setting up/tearing down, running the timer to scoring the match, ect... it takes work. Please dont stand around or shoot and scoot if there is work to be done.
There is still some room for the Rimfire Challenge Shooting Assn Championship. Michael Bane from the Shooting Gallery will be there to make you famous. Sign up here. https://practiscore.com/rcsa-rimfire-challenge-shooting-association-regional-championship/register
See you Wednesday.
Mother Nature hates Wednesdays it seems.
We will email out a weather decision tomorrow by noon.
I don't see this info posted here yet, so from Hoser:
IMPORTANT. Starting in June the matches will move to Tuesdays. Everything else will remain the same.
So that means Pueblo Steel is tomorrow, 6/1, not the day after.
O2
Just in case you missed it, Wednesday afternoon steel matches have moved to Tuesdays from now on. Everything else is the same.
The weather looked terrible yesterday and it rained for a little bit. But it let up long enough for a few brave people to put on a match. Katnip even came out of retirement! We even had a few famous people roll in to say hi and give autographs.
See you next Tuesday.
2022 Matches start up in a couple weeks.
Be there.
Fun match yesterday despite the wind.
It was good to see everyone again.
Two weeks from today and we will do it again. Until mid Oct or so.
Had a ton of people show up yesterday. People even rolled in early to get things going asap.
Results went out around noon. Let me know if you didnt get them.
Which one of you peckerheads pissed off Mother Nature?
And with last nights match in the books, its a wrap for 2023.
See you next April.
