View Full Version : AR started doubling
It's a Bushmaster with a Timney trigger. Just began to shoot doubles. I assume it's a trigger problem. Am I right?
gunked up firing pin channel? reloads or factory if reloads what kind of primer?
I have had this happen with a bad trigger job, also once when my trigger group got dirty. In the first case it was a new trigger, in the second a good cleaning did the trick.
Also had a problem once with a RR trigger not playing well with a light carrier (the cut shroud ones) and it would not fully reset the trigger, so the hammer was not captured and would follow the bolt back.

It's probably clean, but that's a good thought. I'll check.
Ammo was my standard reload out of my Dillon 650. I'd have noticed if primers were high if that's what you were driving at.

I am by no means an expert but I had the same issue had crap in the channel when i was seeing how long the gun would go without cleaning and it would double/ triple on my reloads but not factory or factory reman and I was using rem 7 1/2's

Back off on the hex screws a little then try again. This is one of those thing you need to adj at the range, ONLY load no more than 2-3 rounds at a time, for a number of reasons.

My father had Timney Trigger that was doubling. This was a brand new trigger. He called them, they said it was a known problem and sent him a new one next day.

I tend to agree.
The floating firing pin combined with all the other variables can result in some doubles here and there.
Timney triggers, XP buffer springs, low mass buffers, extra-mass buffers, Federal primers, brass shavings in the FP channel. VERY solid bracing, like bags or a lead sled can also induce doubles.

Interesting. I almost never shoot off a bench, and it only doubled when I moved to the bench. I'll try it again and see if the problem persists in other positions. It was squeaky clean, so that wasn't it.

If that is your issue (it is actually not uncommon), you can cut a coil off the buffer spring, get a reduced power buffer spring, use harder primers or use a Titanium firing pin. You can also reduce the propensity by adjusting the cycle speed: adjusting the gas down or reducing the powder charge.
Throw the Timney in the trash and put a JP in it . Timney's have a known track record of this issue .
Don't monkey with the operating system until its a last resort , messing with carrier weight , springs , LW buffers , and such is unneeded in my opinion on a rifle with marginal recoil to start with .
I don't know that I'll throw it away, but I did just call Timney and it's evidently an old design that has since been superseded for just this problem. They are replacing it at no cost.
