So I was at the Loveland show yesterday and bought a century AKMS under folder. I have never had an Ak. I was wondering If anyone else has one of the century under folders? Are the a decent Ak? I payed 550 for it. I saw the same ones at 5280 for 680$ So I think I got a fair deal. Any input form the AK guys would be much appreciated!

Many people don't like anything Century built (search Google) but my CAI WASR ran 100%

Earlier centry builds were hit or miss.Their fit and finish isn't of the best quality but they function. Some of them needed twaking here and there-most comonly was the canted sights.

For the price their worth it.I think you got a fair deal. Before I escaped from New York the last gunshow I went to in June WASR's were going for $700.

Now get some ammo, and some euro mags-STAY AWAY FROM TAPCOS!!! And shoot that puppy!!![AR15]

Why all the hate for the Tapcos? Cheaper than Dirt had them on sale a while back for 5 bucks. I picked-up 10 of them and they all run just like my steel mags. [Beer]

I personaly never had any luck with them, they allways seemed to fail on me.I got more use out of them using them as targets.Plus it was nearly impossible to find preban ones in New York.

The tapco's are a little tight, but I believe that is the point so you can file them down and customize the fit.

The only mag I have that won't engage one of my Ak's is a steel one. The tapco's all work JUST fine.

I only have Century builds, and they are all awesome.

Good deal in this day and age. If you get a good CAI should be a great shooter.

Thanks for the in put guys! I'm the type of guy that has to see how things work! First thing I did when I got home was take it apart! They are as simple as it gets! One thing I did notice is that the bolt dose not lock open on a empty mag? Is this normal?

I don't know of any AK style guns that have a automatic Last Round Bolt Hold Open. The Siaga's have a manual bolt hold open. The bolt hold open on the Saiga's I have only held the bolt open half way.

Some people cut a notch in the dust cover on the safety lever to engage the bolt handle to keep the bolt open.

I have also been told that the hammer was supposed to stick up far enough in the cocked position to block the bolt back if you gently manually cycle the bolt back. You would nudge the bolt forward after you seated a mag. I always doubted this information though.

Century guns have had a bad reputation for a long time. I don't doubt that they have made some lemons. I have never had a bad CAI gun though.

I prefer the Hungarian 20 round steel mags for general plinking. They aren't the cheapest but I like the way the shorter mags feel. Centerfire has a 3 mags and pouch for $50 package.

Have fun.

On the 'How Things Work' subject here is a slow motion video of 8 shots out of AK at full auto without the top cover on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sNDTdKQNVU

It doesn't realy show how everything works but it's still a cool video if you have an AK.

This video is the reason I don't run buffers in an AK style action.

that's completely untrue. in fact normally an ak has a safety sear that holds the hammer untill the bolt is fully in battery and when the safety sear holds the hammer its actually lower than when the sear holds the hammer(sear is part of the trigger) the person who told you this or told that person this was just making something up to excuse a fcg that needed a rework since semi auto ak's on the american market aren't allowed to have a safety sear since it is also known as a sear trip or sometimes called the "auto sear"

psl's in factory form have a bolt hold open so do yugo m64's (original military versions and they take modded mags) also the yugoslavians used mags with bho followers

as for the century akms it should be nice, they are polish underfolder kits built on nodaks with us barrels as opposed to the romanian wasrs and underfolders

that's completely untrue...

I always thought it was BS. It was told me this to explain why some cheap AK style guns the hammer can hold the bolt open if you gently cycle the bolt. The guy that told me that had a AK Style that would do it. That's the way he would insert a mag into the gun. He would gently cycle the bolt back until it caught on the hammer, stick the mag in, the bump the bolt handle to close the bolt. I have encounter a couple others that could do that. Not being a expert on AKs I always doubted it but didn't know either way.

Thanks for the correct information on that and the Bolt Hold Open feature.

Have Fun.

I believe what you are refering to is called "sticky bolt" by the scientific community. It is usually undesireable, thought not really critical if your rifle does that or not. I wouldn't get used to that method of reloading though, thats for sure.

Surplus Yugoslav brass cased. Good hot stuff when you can find it, and when you do find it, buy in bulk.

Define cheap, Price or mfg wise?
My AR's run anything, now that i'm loading my own, hopefully the rounds will cycle w/out isses in all of them.

For the Kalashnikov action rifles anything that's available. mostly SA, and Russian white box 124gr fmj & HP. Golden tiger, WPA, yugo, silver bear, shit it's an AK, load a mag, pull charging handle, acquire target with safe backstop and pull the trigger.
The only ammo issues i ever had with AK's was from Wincheste,r brass case, boxer primed, 124 gr HP's, bullets were falling out of the case as i loaded a mag, crushed necks, you name it that crap sucks.

Hansen and S&B brass case works fine.

If you are reloading i have a few boxes of boxer primed, brass case i'd do some horse trading with ya.

All the AK's I've owned have done this. What is the fix for it? I'm with you, it bothers me lol.

I ramp smooth and polish the area of the hammer that is on the top back when the hammer is cocked and then the leading edge of the bolt carrier where the bolt stem goes in I file the underside so it's like a knife edge so even running dry it's smooth and with grease it's absurdly smooth. If needed I smooth the inside of the rear sight block to make sure there's no contact at all from the snout of the bolt carrier. Those are my basic tuning tricks to smooth up an ak also I sometimes use jewelers files to clean up the cramming surfaces on the bolt and lap the lugs (if I'm building and installing the barrel) but I've only done that on 2 builds so far

And if these fixes don't work he takes a 4" angle grinder to it.

if that doesn't work then it probably has a canted gas block, worn out recoil spring, is under gassed/over gassed or any combination. then it needs a little more work, though the ak platform is very forgiving
