View Full Version : My First Puppy
I went up to the breeder today to meet our puppy for the first time. He is 5 weeks old as of yesterday and his name is Alamo. He comes from a litter of 7. He comes from four generations of show champions, however he will not be shown by us. This was his first time around anyone else other than his litter mates and the breeder so I'm glad to see that he took to my wife and I well. We will be picking him up for good in four more weeks. I will be updating the thread periodically so that I can track his growth!

Handsome pup!
Labs are awesome.
Be ready for some serious shedding...
Here is another video....I was very pleased to see that he just lays on his back and lets me pet him. He was not squirming or trying to roll over. He seems to have a great personality so far. If anyone is curious the breeder is Snowwoods Labradors. I looked around at quite a few different breeders and decided on them. The owners are great and this litter was timed perfectly with our wanting to get one.

Indeed. I have grown up with having two labs at all times with my parents and now it was time to get my own. Theirs were always terrible about shedding. In the last year I have graduated college, gotten married, purchased my first house, changed careers, so the puppy was the only logical step other than a child. I sure hope that momma doesn't have a little T-Giv cooking in the oven!
Okay sorry to whore him out so much but I'm beyond excited! Last ones I promise. The video is kinda long but if you love some new puppy action then it's worth watching. I could watch lab puppies all day.

Rather deal with a Lab's shedding than a husky's. Labs are great dogs, very friendly, but he'll have loads and loads of energy until he's at least 4 years old. He'll be the best friend you'll ever have though. Congrats!

Do it the right way. Let the puppy raise you!
Well said. I'm worried that my wife is not being realistic about what it takes. She is ALL about this but I will have to remember to ask her that in the middle of the night when the little guy has been moaning because he misses his litter mates. Then when we go downstairs and he left a little surprise for us...Hopefully he is just a little angel and no training required! [ROFL2]

We have a pair of labs, a chocolate named Bear and one of his sisters, a black named Abby. They're both great, although I think Bear's the better of the two. They do have lots of energy, and need time to play outside each day to run some off.
Of course, the wife has this screwball idea that we need a yellow to complete the "set" now...[LOL]

Crate training is hard, have you tried a couple toys in his crate, we used the radio and also used a ticking alarm clock. Something about the rythimic ticking seemed to help for us when I was crate training.
Dogs are great, good luck with that handsome looking lab.

I'm of the philosophy to overwhelm the puppy with new experiences. Just stand and watch, even carry him. He'll learn by your behavior to be calm on a busy street corner or at a crazy dog park.
Pictures make me miss my boy Guinness.

i'll agree that you need to get him the most experiences while he is a pup that you can. The more socialized you can get him the better, take him to stores with you, take him to meet friends kids, other dogs as many new things as possible that way they are not afraid of things when they grow up. If you going to shoot guns around him start out slowly with a cap gun in the other room while he is eating then mover closer and closer with time.
Update to this thread! My boy is growing like a weed! He is already over 20 pounds! He is cute as ever but is going through the biting stage. He is chewing my hands up!

Honestly I can't wait for him to be an adult. He is a great puppy but I have to micromanage him all freakin' day. It'll be nice when I can let him go cruise the yard solo and not worry about him chewing the tops of my sprinkler heads off anymore. [Bang]

I sure hope he does! I mean seriously, I hook him up with the best of the best in dog toys imaginable and he scoffs at them. He will act interested in them for roughly 5 seconds to make me think that he is cool and then I'll walk away. Then like a flash he is back to attacking the couch, eating some rocks, or going after his old friend the sprinkler head.

My lab was a bitter too. I broke that by basically making her bite her own lip each time she bit me.
When he bites you, just wrap his upper lip under his top teeth. That way. if he keeps biting, he will bite his own lip too. That obviously hurts them and quickly stops the problem.
Here's a quick video of the technique.

What is the right way? I took my 10 month old lab pup out into the national forest and shot my .22 about a hundred times with him sitting at my side. You could tell it made him uncomfortable, but he didn't freak out or anything. He was more interested in the new scenery of the forest and kept wandering away to sniff things. When I moved up to a 9mm, he wouldn't stay next to me - I think it was hurting his ears. When I fired my AR, he was laying down about 20 ft behind me. This still made him uncomfortable, but he didn't freak out or try to run away. Did I do it the "right way?"
I have no idea. I was also just going to start with a .22. My dog loves stuff like the lawn mower, weed eater, vacuum, etc. Whenever I use them he always stands in the way and barks. He clearly thinks it's a big game. I even did a burnout on my motard yesterday to see if he would freak out and he just looked at me for a second and then started dancing all around. Not sure how he will take guns though. Can anyone provide some solid answers for the "right" way to introduce him? Should I get him some puppy muffs or something to protect his hearing?
Man I wish I could get a pup like yours. My son loves to play with dogs and mine is to lazy.
My buddy that raises German Short Hairs for pheasant hunting starts them off by banging pots and pans together while they are eating while they are still pups. After they get used to that he has them sit by him while he shoots skeet. That seems to work pretty well.
Well long overdue update to the Alamo thread. He got his first experience with real snow and had a great time. He also survived a 15 hour road trip down to Texas! Next month he is scheduled to get his balls chopped. Does anyone know how much of a behavioral change I should expect to see with him after the snip?

Looking like a great pup! After the snip, due to the lower testosterone, he will probably be a little less inclined to hump everything within reach and may be a little easier to train (more submissive, less independent and dominant).

What he means is you'll be turning your boy dog into a bitch. Which means you should have just got a girl dog to start with.
Nah, a lot of times it makes them a lot less hyper and less destructive. If you want a good friendly and calm dog for a companion, getting him snipped early is the way to go.

Yup this is precisely why we are doing it. He is well behaved now but he can get fiesty with my wife and tries to hump her on occasion. He has certainly not recognized her as a master yet. Hopefully the snip will get him mellowed out a bit. He is a handsome pup and I love him to death.
Well today is the day! I am about to leave to bring Alamo to the chopping block. I feel terrible for him but I know he will be better for it down the road. Hopefully he doesn't resent me afterwards! For those of you who are the praying types please say a prayer for my boy, that there are no complications today and that he has a smooth recovery. Much appreciated! [Beer]
I didn't see what you named him?

Update pics! He is still growing and has been a great pup.

Love how pups sleep in the craziest positions. Looks healthy and happy man!

Well it's been a little while since I updated my Puppy thread. Sadly he is not a puppy anymore but the transition to adult years should be fun as well!

Sorry for the puppy whore out but I really enjoy seeing his progression on this thread.
Love the update. Seems like you ended up with a good one
I like the video of him in the pond.
Nice. We had a lab when I was in high school.
What a fantastic thread! It's great to see how Alamao is growing up. :)
Benjamin Franklin said "beer is God's way of showing He loves us and wants us to be happy", but I personally think that should read DOGS, not beer.
^ Agree with that. I have never seen Beer do anything TRULY good for anyone. I've only seen it make them pretend that they don't have shit to deal with for a while and allow them to act like an idiot. Reality hits hard when they wake up and realize they have the same problems before. Thanks for the support fellas! Alamo will shortly be making his second trip down to TX so hopefully it goes more smoothly than the first rodeo!
