To eat some grapes at the supermarket with out buying the grapes?

Whole Foods has an armed cop at closing and I just watched him grab a couples grapes and eat them. Is it a big deal? Meh. Not really.

Do you eat grapes with no intention of buying any?

Anything eaten before paying for it is technically stealing - particularly items sold by weight!

At Costco today there were a swarm of people there just to eat the samples for lunch.[ROFL1]

Yep theft. Any food, including bulk food is already paid for, eating that deprives the store of that sale. Now I am sure they allow customers and employees to sample items so they. An tell somebody how that item tastes.

I don't know how somebody would prosecute a person for eating bulk food, it's not like they weight him/person before they enter a store and it not like they would weigh them when they left to see how much food was actually consumed as well.

Unprofessional at best, but who knows how the super market is run.

I plan my trips to Costco around meal times. Am I a bad person?

Funny how people at sprouts eat in the bulk food isle, the employees also, and no one says a thing....

I eat a few grapes and then have to stop myself because your right, it is stealing.... Want to make sure they are good though, have bought grapes w/ out sampling and they have been squishy.

While that is my personal view, we are talking about 2 cents at most... on the trip to the grapes that I saw.

It is okay to eat A grape. Sometimes they are sour, sometimes they are rotten, sometimes they just taste weird . . . and they are 8.99 a pound sold in 2 pound bags.

It's probably not that big of a deal. Technically you can look at it as you are taking goods without intent to pay for such goods regardless it it was a little or a lot. If anything you may just get asked to leave if caught, only if you weren't planning on buying any grapes. In this case probably asked to leave your job.

So if you feel the price is too high it is OK to steal from them?

No, the officer was nice enough to test out the food for our public safety.
Maybe officer was testing out HAV breakout, and assure consumer safety.
That will bring a consumer confidence on produce. [LOL]

Maybe he's been there for months and the is an understanding, like free coffee. The bigger question is why they have an armed officer. not very "hippy like" of them.

"Grazing" is technically illegal. Bulk bins, salad bars, produce are all included. I doubt any produce departments care about tasting one grape but there are always those few that have to overdue it.

BFD until your kid sees the cop do it and then does it herself. Then you get to explain why the cop did it but she can't.

I sample and encourage my kids to "sample" at will. And I don't stop at grapes. I say go sick, cantaloup, apples, bananas, peaches, coconuts. And we don't stop at produce. Ice cream, cookies, milk. Sometimes we take samples for later. I shop at places with no cops, so usually no issues.

Nope.. It's not ok to steal.

I purchase what I want. But there is no reason it should cost me over $100/wk just to not eat shitty processed food. It's my choice not to do so, and I could be fat like the rest of the people.. I attempt to eat clean, and I pay out the ass for doing so.

It'd be cheaper if I was a sheep and ate like the rest of them.. [NoEvil][NoEvil]

Have you ever taken a pen from work?

What about a roll of toilet paper/tape/quart of oil (for you mechanics)/an "old computer monitor that no one was using and would have been thrown away anyways"/etc/etc/etc.

This is where relativism rears its ugly head where people tend to weigh the value they believe they put into whatever organization is in question as opposed to the value of what is being taken.

As was mentioned, when one is "testing" a product to ensure its quality with the intent to buy (as long as it isn't spoiled, gross, etc) that shouldn't be an issue at all in regards to "right" or "wrong."

Yes but what if everyone did that? 2 cents becomes millions of dollars which will get passed down to the consumers

Technically yes it is if you do not intend to purchase. However, I feel that if you truly are planning on making a purchase it is acceptable to "test" the product within reason.

One must be "reasonable" and use common sense.

A few years back a Whole Foods cashier's stalker ex-boyfriend stabbed her in the neck inside the store in front of customers . . . so now all the stores have a uniformed police officer providing security.

I plan my trips to Costco around meal times. Am I a bad person?

Nope, Costco and Sams encourages it. If you check the comics section, going to a club store for lunch sampling comes up occasionally.

The distinction between eating food and not paying (theft) and the samples, is consent. The store gives you the samples.

What would people think of taking one round of ammunition out of a box to test first? I think most see it is wrong.

The crucial issue is not the law, but honor and integrity.
