Anyone ever use a 7.62x39 for big game?

No. There are simply too many other better calibers and firearms.

I personally haven't, but I had a lot of friends in high school that did. They took several elk with them, but didn't take long shots. Most were 150 yards or less.

It can do it just like a perfect .22 shot. Advisable? Not so much. As in another thread if you are looking for bare cheap hunting just get a $100 mosin and 25 rounds for 8 bucks.

Don't know about your rpk but would also want to make sure even if you had the power, accurate too.

Keep in mind, you're on par with a .30-30.

It can be done with a soft point of good construction, but I think it's borderline ethically.

I agree, but thats what I got(i'd rather use a 308 or 30-06).Divorce is a pain in the ass[Coffee]

Please no. Unless you are 80 yards or under. Just not enough.

Perhaps you can borrow from a friend/family member? Or look into a cheap Mosin?

dude, just borrow a rifle from someone. Post up a thread and see if someone will loan you a rifle for the season, sight it in for you and hunt, then return it. Divorce happens, lots of people understand that.

Remember that an RPK can holdup to 40 rounds in a mag!!!!! That should do it.
Besides. You don't need permission from here!!
Go for it and report!!

For the sake of the animal and the meat I would advise against it. You screw up a shot you just ruined the meat and now the animal is suffering. Pumping another 39 rounds into the side is just a waste.

Lol. 5 round mag limit in semi auto for big game. So no 40 round mags allowed anywhere on you.

Also, I think we all assume semi auto RPK, not NFA MG. hopefully thats a good assumption.

I have 5 rd 7.62x39 mags
FWIW: I know a few hunters in NE (of all places) that take em down with sks's. it's a 30 cal running JSP. what's the difference between a sks and lever 30-30?? besides the obvious mechanics. In Iowa they can only hunt with shotguns.

I'll trade you my stainless Ruger M77 .30-06 for your RPK

I know a guy who uses an AR-15 in 7.62x39 for mule deer and has bagged a few(most shots being between 35-100 yards) and uses the corbond 7.62x39 and gets great results from it.

After we get together on the reloading stuff you need to road test a few AK's i have.

And not really legal unless you reload fast

Mule deer and Elk are different stories...

Well, the five round magazine limit is already mentioned. Be sure that the magazine is blocked permanently, because you carry an RPK around, you WILL be checked by DOW. And you'd need to use expanding bullets in the ammunition, so no surplus ammo.

This sums up my concern on where this thread is going. Deer, I would say go for it. Elk or bear, would not do it out of respect for the animal. Just borrow someone's .308 or 30-06 and let them hold your RPK as collarteral. You will have a better chance getting an elk anyway because getting within 200 yards gets harder and harder with each rifle season that passes.
