View Full Version : What was your Rate or MOS in the military????

I know there is a decent amount of folks on here who served this great Country.
Im curious what you all did while in the service.
In the Navy my "Rate" or MOS for you USMC and Army guys,
I was a Gunner's Mate (Missiles) and I worked on a Tomahawk Vertical Launching System.
I acchieved the rank of E-5, 2nd Class Petty Officer and my title was GM2 (Last Name) from 1996 to 2000.
Me in summer of 99 on the Empire State building for "Fleet Week"
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb116/DD977GM2/Military/WTC_99.jpg
I fired the #7 bird onto Sudan in summer of 98 in the Red Sea.
I was part of the VBSS (Visit Board Search Seizure) team for all my deployments
for enforcing UN Sanctions while in the Persian Gulf. I also did a ton of work in the
Armory onboard , basically perfroming repairs and preventative maintenance on
the M-14, Rem 870, M9 Beretta, M60, M79...never got to shoot that puppy and
the wonderfully badass Browning M2. [M2]
I guess that is where I attained my love of firearms and the desire to be very proficient
with them all. To this day though, I hate the M9 and will never own one
and really hate cleaning firearms after shooting, I do it only because if not, my firearms can be ruined.
I will post pics later of me onboard if I can find them!!!!!
Lets hear what ya did while you allowed the rest of us to have freedom[Weight]
Also for the dupe police, I think this is an acceptable dupe thread if there is even one still active [SP]

I was a 35F- Intelligence...
That's all I can say about it [Coffee]
Just kidding. I was the S2 ANCOIC, PSD Team member, Base Ops ASOG for our FOB in Afghanistan, and firearms instructor. I was with 3IBCT, 10th Mountain Division, and deployed in support of OEF IX/X (12/08-12/09). Qualified expert in M4, M203, M9 and taught familiarization with the AK-47.
Served 4 years, 10/06-10/10, couldn't re-up due to injury and surgery... but am A-OK now! Got out as an E-4 (CPL)
Me with my PSD team before a mission

Made Corporal (E-4) pretty fast, but my cutting score for Sergeant was unattainable. There were so few of us comm-techs in the Corps, you had to wait for someone to retire or die to get promoted above E-4.

Wow that is pretty freaking cool! I was on the USS Essex so I didn't see the LAR guys much. I think I had to cross-deck to both of the support ships at some point to fix radios. They changed the Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) while I was in but I started out for my first 4.5 years as a 491X1 (Communications & Computer Operator; the "X" denoted skill level, I made it to "5 level" skill).
I re-trained (okay, I bypassed the actual "training" and became..) a 491X2 (Programmer) which later became 3C0X2. After 15.5 years in this career field, I retired as a "7 level" Programmer.
Guess what I never (not once) got to do during my career. That's right, write code (program). Oh, I got to do System Software Analysis, System Administration and to "manage" a web development shop, but I never got to actually be a programmer.
Of course, I got to play at being a Port Operations troop, a Transportation Vehicle Operations driver, a Facility Manager for the largest & newest building on the Base, an OPFOR (volunteer) member, a 7 year Self Aid & Buddy Care (military type first aid) Instructor, a QC'd/honorary "badged" Security Forces member, and a Unit Security Manager, but no programming.

I was stationed there from '04-'06 but I really wasn't there much. Ahhh....the Green Ramp....
11B1P - 82nd ABN. 2000-03. One go-round in Afghanistan. Something like OEF 2 or 3... I don't know how it was classified. When the shopette opened on Bagram, that might have been the best day of my life. The second best day might have been when some AF guys I knew had pizzas flown in from Germany. 12-hour-old cold pizza was a-freaking-mazing.
And F the Green Ramp. Nothing like showing up there at 1400 to do a nighttime Mass TAC with a TOT of 0200. Hated that crap...

And Division runs. And All American Week. I'm sure other divisions have that crap too. The one full division parade I was actually around for, I was "lucky" to be assigned to a parking lot detail - I guess there weren't enough MPs or something. Anyway, there were medics "hidden" back in the woodline for the people who passed out. I had a good laugh about that.

Screw that shit! I'd rather be getting my ass smoked all day in Bn than do that gayness.
11M3B, C-130 pilot, Elmendorf and Pope, OIF, OEF, and OEF-P. Out of AD now, work at alma mater-Rocky Mountain School for Wayward Boys and Girls
I know a few dudes who were at Pope and Elmo. Elmo sounded like a blast, but its on the BRAC list :(
Do you guys offer ride alongs?[Beer]
Of course! Just grab a set of Multicams, a rifle and hop on [Tooth]
We got ride alongs all the time....only they were 1 way. Couldn't tell if AF was being nice to us, or being mean and kicking us out for eating their food.
LOL
I've got unwavering respect for the Army dudes because they pull way longer rotations than we do and have a tougher job. I dont care if they eat all the food at Ali al Salem, Kuwait...it was horrible. Bagram on the other hand...mmm BBQ.
you must be a youngin'
I remember when they were the old Dodges
My Contact truck was a Dodge
Like one of these?

Does it count if I'm still in?
Started as a 2A5X3A, Offensive Avionics Specialist...worked on B-1B offensive/nav systems...cross trained into current AFSC of 9S100 or Technical Applications Specialist. All I can say about this job is that I do work regarding global nuclear treaty monitoring...and satellite stuff.
Semper Fi, recruit! Are you 2800 or 2500? The former is techs, the latter is operators (battery-powered grunts).
Only thing I know is I'm going in as 0600

Was that the VERDAN? I worked on an inertial nav system for subs called SINS using the MARDAN I understand was similar.

Working on Heavy Junk, we had a motto:
"You blow'em, we tow'em", "We tow the dead" or "We're High drag, Low speed"
I was a 19D from '87-'97. Served in Desert Shield and Storm. Ran in Bradleys mostly, but served on Hummers as well. Seemed our co-ax always misfired.

Funny... you look like you're about 29... But then again when you hit E-6 and you being a tan-beanie wearer it probably feels more like 59.
RTLW- ATW! [Beer] One of my "mentors" was with the 75th, retired CSM- #1 lesson: "Rangers are the best friends to have and the worst enemies to make... messing with them is like diving head first into a wood chipper, except you hear the wood chipper." [Tooth]
