View Full Version : Friend of mine. Centennial home robbery yesterday

Came home and pulled up facebook last night, and a very close (female) friend of mine had posted up about walking in on two intruders.
I immediatly called her but it turns out it had happened around 330 in the afternoon yesterday. (meaning her first thought wasnt facebook lol).
Long story short;
She goes out to run an errand, her brand new husband is at work and she has the day off. She comes home to find the back sliding glass door open. She assumes that her husband came home early because they were having work done in their yard. Around the corner walks a hispanic male. She even assumes that her husband was home, and let the guy in to grab water or something. then she notices him holding her husbands backpack and in that flash of a moment puts everything together.
The hispanic guy yells to somebody else, and runs past my friend to leave out the back door again. Out comes a black guy running for the same door. in the middle of this my friend runs out the front door. The intruders climb back over the fence and run past my friend again, now in the front yard on the phone. At that same moment a neighbor drives up and she yells to him. That guy takes off after the intruders.
Great discriptions of both guys, and the car they ran too and sped off in. Of course police are skepticle about making any arrests. Scary thing though is that she (her husband) has 5 guns in the house and they were all laid out on the bed. Obviously the guys were going to take them. They didnt get a chance on this one.
Police apparently said that they lifted a lot of good prints off of the door and one of the guns in particular. (they took that gun back with them).
I know that I'm preaching to the choir here, but this was centennial. It's here. Whatever "it" is... It's here. Our neighborhoods, our streets, our friends, our movie theaters, our homes.
The intruders went so far as to go through her underwear drawer, and not to make light of anything, they even were messing with her,,, ahem,,, "bob". if you get my drift. Her, her husband and I will be making a trip out to Bob's range so that I can intruduce her to him, and get her signed up for the CCW class he provides out there.
Be vigilant out there guys. You absolutely never know when "it's" coming....

she was lucky they didn't assault her, most robbers would kinda panic when the home owner comes home
Too bad she wasn't carrying and dropped them right there. Glad she is okay

My thought too.. Even if they didnt plan on doing something VERY bad to her,, I was thinking about one of them just planting a good right hook on her to put her down and out for awhile to get away. She is pretty petite, slender etc. the right punch would have done some major damage.

They did make off with a bunch of jewlery. including some stuff that they had given eachother on their wedding day (which was like a month ago)..
they made off with her dads stamp collection. yeah that was my thought too.... lol... but apparently they had it apparaised like 3 years ago and it was worth $11000. Could be worth more now, and you know those guys are going to sell it for like $100 of weed... lol....
just a bummer. she feels pretty violated and stuff.

I'd have to find out for you. I will see..
It would absolutely hit the fan if I came home and saw some shit birds like that. Phew doggy. It only takes once and hopefully she has learned the importance of being able to defend yourself should she encounter something like this again and the guys panic and start attacking her.

damn, that sucks. A good safe might a be a nice investment also. Along with that, a home security system is another good investment.

that's what they told her... who knows. if they try to sell some stuff, or if they are caught for something else, then a different story..
OK. Did you ever determine if this was East or West Centennial?

Sliding glass doors can be easy to jimmy or lift out of track and are one of the most common entry points for burglars. Putting a dowel in the track and adding a clamp style lock to the door can make entry more difficult. Air conditioning units are another common entry point, as in most cases they can simply be pushed out of the way.
Contractors, or "friends" of contractors, often turn out to be involved with burglaries in the nicer neighborhoods like Centennial. Always work with a trusted, bonded company. Too many companies take on too much work and end up using temps from Craigslist or even illegal immigrants to handle the overflow.
It would've been even scarier if all 5 of those guns were loaded and they already had them stuck in their waistbands.
I am so glad to hear she was okay. Statistically, she was incredibly lucky to be unhurt, and it is amazing they did not pack up those guns immediately as they were probably worth more on the street than they could've sold the jewelry to a fence for.

I feel bad for your friend. I can understand to a point the responding deputies skepticism on a successful prosecution. Let me give you an example from that judicial district.
A burglary occured at a residence. Owner comes home and opens the garage door and finds a vehicle inside the garage that doesn't belong to him. Goes inside. Finds the house rummaged through and an open back door. Finds a sock belonging to him on the back lawn.
Police swab the vehicle in the garge (reported stolen the previous day) and a coke can in the console for DNA. Same with the sock. DNA hits on the coke can and the sock. Two different males, one on each item. Later, DNA matches occur as both males are swabbed for DNA and added to the database due to being incarcerated for...burglary. Both grew up in the same neighborhood, but claim to not know each other.
When interviewed, both deny involvement in burglary and don't know how their DNA got on the items.
DA won't prosecute as police can't prove either was inside the residence, although the sock found outside was originally inside in the laundry room (in case you haven't figured it out, the sock was used as a glove to keep from putting fingerprints on things). While I can see that maybe the guy whose DNA was on the coke can can claim he touched that can earlier in the day when he was in the vehicle and dropped off before the real suspects went to the residence, the guy whose DNA was in the sock cannot make such a claim. I could see the DA not prosecuting the coke can guy, but not going after the sock guy doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, just a real life example of that judicial district's thoughts on prosecution of these types of crimes.

Never leave home with unsecured firearms in it.
A Startled burglar may have it when you surprise him.

What OneGuy said. I'd like to add that the level of investigation OneGuy mentioned is both labor & financially intensive and most local and county jurisdictions don't have the $ or personnel to handle these things. Most go UN-investigated (at least that's how it is in Colo Spr).

Same around here. My wife was with her friend walking the dogs and the friends vehicle got broken into, their wedding giftcards stolen, credit cards used within minutes to buy giftcards at walgreens and the cops, even though video evidence of the thieves was recovered from walgreens. Nobody was caught....[Rant1]
That's some scary s$%^! Glad your friends ok and they are lucky they aren't 6 ft under right now.

A sock?! I was in the army my friend. I was thinking something completely different for the use of the sock. [Coffee]
My guess would be that most home robberies occur during the day while their occupants are off at work. I know it happened that way to my brother and to my mom. In fact, my mom came home and caught the guy there too. Only my mom didn't go into the house when she saw the back door was opened. She was armed but stayed in her vehicle in the driveway and called the police. The intruder must have heard her drive up because while she was on the phone the guy bolted out the back door of the house and ran. They actually caught him shortly afterwards.

I heard this come across a scanner around on University and Dry Creek. If it was not the one I heard then it was very similar. ACSO got into the area instantly as the call was aired, but I believe the neighbor had them on the run. This area of Centennial is quite safe, the ACSO and citizens do a good job of keeping it so.
Seems to me that there are a lot more burglarys these last 18 months. Personally I think people should invest in home security systems whether a monitoring service or a self monitoring service. Just fortifying and making things difficult for a potential burglar can help to. Either way another good reason to have a CCW since this woman came upon something in her home unkowningly.

Bingo! Not just a basic monitoring system that over priced ADT charges for... What good is 2 doors with no window sensors. You need all windows, motion on basement and floor levels. Garage door as well and the door from outside into the garage. I can monitor my alarm on my phone, i can turn on lights, open and close my garage door, i get a txt when someone rings my doorbell, etc. All with monitoring for 1/2 of what ADT charges... i have an alarm guy that does awesome work if anyone needs his info.

Yeah I misinterpreted the post I suppose, thinking since the neighbor took off after them he would have had a license plate number and or been in pursuit to alert the authorities of the perps actual location while fleeing, read too much into that looks like. I can understand that in a robbery you come home to and your things are destroyed or missing there is little luck in finding those responsible, but I would think if you walked in on a robbery in progress it may be a different situation since there was face to face confrontation? This is the sort of confrontation I would think the police would contact the local news about to get a description of the men and vehicle out to the general public, but again I understand the money and personnel stand point. Glad she's okay.
Also Kwando.....that is awesome

that looks like a great set up. do you have to have an Iphone to have that type of remote monitoring/control of the system?
Damn glad she's okay. As you mentioned, you never know when "it" is going to rear "it's" ugly head in your world. The other day my wife came home and found the screen removed from our kitchen window (on the outside). I'm guessing my 80 lb German Shepherd/Aussie mix convinced the person(s) to go elsewhere. I replaced the screen, keep the window locked now. My schedule recently changed, so now I'm home during the day. I am taking closer note to who is walking around my neighborhood and those who are driving by at an unusually slow pace. It sucks because my house backs up to an alley, so scrappers are always driving up & down the alleys. I gave Englewood PD the courtesy of letting them know my wife discovered. They stated there had been several home burglaries in the area as of late. Probably only a matter of time before some intruder makes the wrong call and enters a house that is occupied by an armed home owner.
About a month ago someone got into my car parked in the driveway. They rifled through everything, but only took a set spare of keys (house and car). I've changed locks.. After talking to the neighbors about it, a house up the street was broken into while the wife was in the shower. She came out and found someone in her master bedroom. She yelled and they took off...it could have been much worse
Since then, I've had an uneasy feeling. On Tuesday I have an alarm company coming in to update my system. We haven't used it since we moved in, and was unsure it even worked. Putting the usual stuff plus motion in the garages, and 3 cameras (facing front door, back of house, and one interior that covers about 1/2 the 1st floor) that can be watched from anywhere in teh world.
I'm just having a "gut feeling" lately

Wow i didn't know there were that many questions about this setup.

No, the app is separate from the alarm/automation system. The app is $50 on iTunes, and the have an android version as well. Monitoring is totally separate, you don't need monitoring at all, it can send you a txt for everything. i.e. when system is armed, garage door is left over after system is armed, temp in the house gets too cold/hot, etc.
What company is that? Doesn't do us much good to talk about it but not name it.
The alarm/automation system is ElkM1Gold.
My guy's name is Jason his contact info is 720-335-5983 (google voice).
ADT/Brinks will nickel and dime you for everything! You want no landline... +$5, you want to control it with your iPhone +5%, etc. They charge a lot for monitoring because they have staff that will roll out to fix your stuff if it goes bad. Jason can cut that cost by doing a quality install, and monitoring will be WAY lower. Same response time. Not to mention that i spent $1k when i bought the house, and when i cancelled with Brinks they wanted the equipment back. So i just paid for labor... BS!
