Takes standard 75w90 for the front.
PM sent.
Mine has been leaking for a few years. I top off the fluid twice a year and call it good. I have been told the "new" seal will leak just as bad and the cost is $600 or so.

Wish I had read that sooner....

I wouldn't recommend letting it get too low, from experience the bearing behind that seal is a bitch to change.
that sucks. Hope you get it taken care of. if it isn't too terrible I would just top it off and check it at each fill up. carry some extra oil in the truck.

The seal is under $50 and takes 15 minutes to change if it's really your diff seal that's leaky. If its a pinion seal it's a little harder to do.

Watch out for the transfer case on that truck. Apparently there is a flaw at the rear seal of the transfer case where a clip breaks and the shaft wears into the housing. It cost me around $2400 for the parts and labor. It is a fairly common problem on these trucks. They usually go out around 100K-140K miles.
Had the same leak on my 1500. it was like 400 bucks at the dealer. The wacky diff case supposedly needs a special tool. Haynes book said take out the diff and have it serviced by someone with the tool. Look online and see if you want to try it. The seal is almost free, getting in the right spot is expensive.
I know a great mechanic if you need one.

i talked to my old college buddy who runs a shop up in greeley, and he said we could do it in about half an hour depending on what beer i bring...It actually works out great because my other buddy is going to let me borrow his rokon for elk hunting and lives just outside of greality. I'm gonna get some oil and top it off, i don't drive it much, but damn, what a pita...One problem after another with vehicles...thxs for the help...
Hands down the easiest and fastest way to change a diff seal is with a LubeLocker (http://www.lubelocker.com/) Best gasket made.
This is an easy and simple fix. Get some diff fluid, a Lube Locker gasket and some brake cleaner and you are good to go. Easy as pie

I think the issue is the axle seal, not the cover.

Oh bummer, well then my advice is worthless.
Ok, move along nothing to see here.
Well LubeLockers still kick ass so if anyone ever needs a seal try one of these.
Good luck OP
Didn't we have a thread earlier about how awesome GM quality is these days? [Coffee]

They are bad enough for a German car guy to know that the front diffs eat axle seals like no other. Known issue. 50-60% chance of seeing it leaking on every GM 4x4 you look at.
