Remington 1911 Question

I was curious if any of you gentleman have had any experience with the Remington R1 1911? Heard anything good or bad. I think its a great looking gun from a respectable company. However, with them being relatively new to the 1911 game, (as of recently) I didnt know if there were some problems that they might have. If anyone has one, I'd like to hear what you have to say. The price is also a big incentive. Just wondering if I should go with the tried and true springfield. Normally i wouldnt go near a new firearm in the first couple years of its manufacture, but the 1911 has been around for so long i didnt think they would have many design kinks to work out, I may be wrong though. Handled a couple, the fit and finish left me with more to be desired. Ruger SR1911 and a STI Spartan are right at the R1 1911 price range. The ruger looks much nicer.

I will agree with the above. Not much different from a Rock Island and I had heard rumors that they come from the same foundry.
I have worked on a couple, nothing spectacular and one would figure with the Remington name they would put it on a higher quality product.
Buy a Springy and know your money was well spent.

FWIW: I am seeing a lot of guns from "respected" mfg on the market. The one common thing with all of them..........imports with the "brand name" stamped on once in the US.
I looked at a winchester SXP 12ga pump. damn thing was a turkish import, nice unit, just serious lack of aftermarket [re: tactical] add on's

I had one for awhile. Fit and finish was "meh", but it was accurate and 100% reliable with everything I fed it.

Personally, I am not a big fan of Springfield 1911s. Darn near every part on them is injection molded. And the lock thingy in the mainspring housing is just plain stupid.

I would second the Ruger. I like the fact that the plunger tube is made as part of the frame instead of just staked to the frame.


As far as the Remington goes, the Rock Islands are probably just as good and you can pick them up cheaper.

Good luck finding a SR1911. There are a few around but not many. They sure look great though and GMG sells them for $629 when they have them.

I like mine, however I have only about 70 or so rounds thru it. I wanted something close to the orginal and made in the USA

I have yet to have any problems with any amo FMJ or JHP.

I got mine in March of this year and paid $639.00

Mine was missing the Rt upper grip screw (the guy I got it from took $10.00 off the price)

Same experience as Snowman with mine. I don't think these are from the Rock Island (PI) foundry, but could be wrong. I have had both & find the Remington to show better fit & finish and better reliability. It is a series 80 for those who prefer that (I do). Previous owner fired 200 rounds with 1 FTF & one stove pipe. I've gone thru over 250 without issue & it's accurate....just not when I'm pulling the trigger. Love it!

Having said all that, now I'm awaiting my PI made commander strictly to shoot the hell out of & beat up a bit.

I need to get some more rounds thru mine. When I did shoot it I thought the POI may be off the left a little bit, but it may just be me. I had never fired a 1911 befor I got mine and It is the only one I have evey fired.

My first choice would be a Remington UMC, second would be a Remington Rand, but I hear these Remington R1's ain't bad either......
