heres the reply i just got from emailing him right after the virginia tech thing, he apparently didnt read my email too closely (or at all), since he thinks i want MORE gun laws.... i dont really remember what i wrote him but im 200% sure i did not say i wanted it harder for people to get firearms.
Dear Patric
Thank you for letting me know you think the shootings at Virginia Tech should prompt Congress to act to make it harder for people to obtain firearms. I appreciate your taking the time to get in touch with me.
As a father, my heart goes out to the affected families and students of Virginia Tech. From experience, we in Colorado know what they have suffered. But I don't think more federal gun control laws would stop another troubled, disturbed person from doing something similar.
I think we should enforce the gun laws now on the books, but we should also look into campus safety and communications systems, increased funding for school counseling, making mental health services more accessible and doing what we can to try to understand why someone would commit such a horrendous crime. If all that comes of this incident is a discussion about guns, then I think we've missed an important opportunity to address all that was involved.
I do not know if firearms legislation will be debated this year, but I will remember your views.
Thanks again for contacting me. To do my job well, I need to hear critical feedback from my fellow Coloradans. For more information about my positions, please visit my website at www.house.gov/markudall and sign up for my email newsletter.
