sHiNy ThInGs....... barrel is too purdy, how to de-purdy a barrel.

Got my new CMMG 16" 308 upper, very nice, the barrel is Stainless but it is too shiny. Way too purdy for my ugly arse.

"Other" than replacing the barrel, just in case that was the suggestion, anyone else have a similar problem with their purdy toys?

Is there a coating that I can paint on to cover it up and withstand the heat, literally?

I read some people have used GunKote on a stainless barrel.

I am wondering what prep has to be done, the review of Gunkote was the person sandblasted the barrel first and then coated it. I was thinking of a wrap for temporary hiding of the shiny thing.....

Never tried it on stainless, but bbq grill refinisher? Basically the same stuff as porfiriozg said, just sold at lowes instead of autozone.

Yep. Bead blast that sucker. If that isn't good enough then use the BBQ pit paint. It'll take all the heat you can dish out. And if it scratches, peels, flakes, or whatever you can just touch it up. One can is just a few dollars and will last a long time.

I have access to a couple of good glass bead cabinets if you need some help. Here is a 1911 I bead blasted. The original stainless was just too shiny.

That would be an industrial blast cabinet.
On the other bench is another big black thing that contains tools.
308 platform tools to be exact.

Nope. No buying "sand". Plus, it isn't sand. Sand blasting will make a pretty rough surface and remove a bit of material as well. What I have access to is a glass bead cabinet. It uses glass beads. They leave the surface dull but smooth and don't really remove any material.

You would need the .308 tools though. Or we would have to take some time masking off everything we don't want blasted.

The 1911 I posted earlier started life looking like this...

Yep, that barrel would shout "here I am !" if you were trying to sneaky Pete around.........there's nothing to figure out, take the upper off and take it to Bert. You won't need to let him know you are coming, the glare reflection from your barrel will be seen from half way across town....[Tooth]

Late to the game here, but.... Why not black Krylon? It'll stand up to any heat short of a Beta-C dump, and when it comes time to sell or otherwise revert to shiny, a $1 can of brake cleaner will take it off in a couple minutes.

The barrel is so shiny it repels anything, including light............ I actually sprayed a bit on the end of the barrel. I literally peeled off the dried paint like it was nothing.

I need to rough it up first. Will probably do the BBQ grill paint. I don't exactly plan on selling it, always wanted one and I sacrificed a bunch of toys to get it. I am not a Randy........................... [Coffee]

I have a plan, just no time to take off the hand guard and experiment.
