Unemployed vet needs legal help regarding a civil/family matter in Colorado Springs. Long story short, ex-wife is suing (again), this time for an exorbitantly inflated amount from an unpaid debt that arose out of a divorce. Vet is unemployed and trying to go go school to get back on his feet but can't due to the continual harassment from his ex. In the last couple of years, he's had a heart attack, a stroke and was forced into bankruptcy due to layoff and incessant harassment in the courts from his ex.

Can anybody point to a legal resource in the Colorado Springs area who could at least talk to this guy or point him to an attorney who accepts pro bono work or low cost work.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks

Does the JAG provide those kinds of services to disabled vets? He's not retired, just disabled.

I'm not sure. Might be worth a phone call to find out.

No. The JAG is like the DA's office. They are NOT there to assist anybody but the .mil dept. they work for.

I wsh I coud offer a suggestion for an attorney but I can not. Good luck with the search.

If the harassing is that bad, he should put a restraing order on her and half of his problems will be solve cause the crazy nut will violate it and be in jail.

It's really just harassment in the courts although, he has been the victim of of domestic violence from her in the past. She has a severe personality disorder and will likely not give up easily. Unfortunately, I don't think a restraining order will help with the court harassment. She makes over 150K/year and he's on unemployment and can't even afford his heart meds and she's continually dreaming up law suits because she know's he can't afford an attorney. That's why the question about pro bono or low cost legal help.

Color me skeptical, but this sounds like a load of sheet. Any good lawyer, or public defender for that matter, should be able to tackle this easily.

and if he is broke and honorably discharged, the VA will pay for his meds. Unless they are the special Colorado meds.
Only service connected....Go to the court house and there is a place for legal aid.File a restraining order.Counter sue....

not true.
you can go to the VA no matter what, if you are honorably discharged. You will be given a certain classification, based on income, length of service, and level of need medically. I went for years before I was ever rated service connected. I know many people who go to the VA for medical care, who are not service connected. If you make a lot of money, you may have a co-pay. If you have a small need, you may have to wait a while for an appointment.

There are priority groups 1-8. If there is no Service connection, you will be in the 7 or 8 group, based on income.

these are the questions they ask FIRST. then it goes off of your need and income, but you will get in.

You were discharged or separated for medical reasons, early out, or hardship
You served in theater of combat operations within the past 5 years
You were discharged from the military because of a disability (not preexisting)
You are a former Prisoner of War
You received a Purple Heart Medal
You receive VA pension or disability benefits
You receive state Medicaid benefits
Served in the Republic of Vietnam from January 9, 1962 to May 7, 1975
Served in the Persian Gulf from August 2, 1990 to November 11, 1998
if none of the above is true, then it will be based on....

Do You Qualify For VA Health Care?

Based on the information you provided, your eligibility for VA health care benefits may be based on special factors such as military history factors or household income. We encourage you to apply now for VA health care benefits (https://www.1010ez.med.va.gov/sec/vha/1010ez/).
Submitting an application is the best way to find out if you qualify. Plus, if in the future new regulations take effect, VA will automatically reassess your application to determine if you qualify. If we have your application on file, we will be able to notify you if new rules make you qualified for health benefits in the future.

Agreed but lately ive seen more of the co-pays and longer waits depending on if your an OIF/OEF vet.I'd stay away from the VA unless you have to or your in the top tier.Do the walmart $5 co pay:)[Beer] Also my VA Docs have recommended "special" CO drugs.

Doesn't the bankruptcy get rid of the debt; just file the discharge order with the court hearing the debt case.
