View Full Version : Getting a new phone tomorrow
Finally time to replace my p.o.s. Blackberry. (No, "p.o.s." doesn't mean "point of sale" [Coffee])
Not sure what I'll end up with. Figure I'll go into the store and fondle a bunch of phones and ask questions. I'm not really an Apple fan so I doubt I'll get an Iphone. But you never know. I want to check out the Samsung Galaxy S III. I've never had an Android phone but I hear good things about them.

Who's your carrier? I'd suggest the SIII unless you have Sprint. Then I'd get the Evo 4g LTE.
Sorry, I should have mentioned... I do have Sprint.
Headed to the website now to check out the one you suggested.

I waited to get a new phone until the S3 dropped then I still went home with the Evo. The screen is .1" smaller but the way Samsung does the pixels makes the screen look much cleaner on the Evo even though they're the same resolution. The camera is really nice too. Plus physically it feels like a much more solid phone. Go compare them though. Those two phones are the best you can do right now.
Here's an example of a photo from the Evo during a crazy rain storm down in Denver a little ways back (compressed via facebook mind you):

Photo and video capabilities will be very important to me on this one as it will be my primary camera for all of the pictures and video I take on my Hawaiian vacation in a couple of weeks.
Internet browsing and email will be important too because I am hoping to leave my laptop at home for the trip and just rely on my phone.
I'll definitely have to lay hands on the phones first. Darn near every one of them seems pretty similar on-line.

Like I said, go check them out and see which one you like more. The Evo and SIII are pretty similiar hardware wise (processor, RAM, etc). I know you shoot some vids at the range so you might want to check that out. That's one thing you can't really test at the store though. Playback always looks good on the camera's screen. It's when you get it on your computer that it makes or breaks it. Unfortunately I haven't seen any video/photos from an S3 outside of the phone itself.

I have verizon but i went with the Droid Bionic from motorola because its my only internet at home so screen size was important. Its way faster then the iphone i have at work, i hated i phones already but after getting one from work i really prefer the droids and androids.
Sounds like you are the yang to my phone needs. http://fc09.deviantart.net/images3/i/2004/11/0/b/Yin_Yang_emoticon.gif [Coffee]

Ha. I would guess probably 80% of today's cell phone users are the yang to your ying.

If you're going to Hawaii and not staying on the main island you better get verizon IMHO.
Droid Razr Maxx for me.

If you like latest and greatest then avoid iPhone till they announce their next model in a couple weeks. Any apple product makes you feel like it's outdated when you walk out the door with it but nothing's worse than signing a new 2 year contract days before they announce the new model with a larget screen and faster processor.

Staying on the main island.
Also, I don't plan on making/receiving calls or texts while I'm there. Just want to take pictures and video and maybe use the Wi-Fi at the hotel in the evenings to check e-mail, post pictures and videos on-line, and (of course) keep up with the forums here.

I'm sure you aren't too far off. http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f292/jens360/spit-water-smiley.gif
If I had to go with a smart phone, it would be an iPhone. It just works best with the iPad and MacBook. I really like the idea of being able to used it as a remote wifi hotspot. The ability to interchange Square register with the iPhone/iPad is another plus.
All things I'm sure your will not be doing in Hawaii. [Flower]
Rezzing this thread from the dead.... Anybody recently buy a Sprint Android phone that you love/hate? I also have Sprint and it's finally time to replace my old LG Optimus S. I've somehow limped it along for an extra year beyond my service contract.
I've got three phones on my list right now: HTC EVO 4G LTE, LG OPTIMUS G, and MOTOROLA PHOTON Q 4G LTE.
I've had a string of bad personal experiences with Samsung and am not considering the GALAXY for those reasons.
Battery life has always been a non-issue for me so I'm not even considering that. My current phone has a stated battery life of 5 hours and I've never had issues with it, and all the phones I've listed above are 7.5 hrs plus battery life.
My fat thumb tips really miss the days of the QWERTY keyboard and i've found the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE that has android OS and the slide out keyboard. Anybody have experience with this phone? I'm really interested in this one for this reason.
Thanks if anybody has feedback.

I don't know much about the Sprint lineup of phones, but I just picked up an HTC DNA with Verizon and it is amazing! Extremely fast and the 1080p screen is bad ass! If HTC makes an equivalent for Sprint I'd highly recommend it. With that said, I'm a huge HTC fan, and have owned their products for my last three phones, so I don't think you could go wrong with anything from them.

Curiosity got the best of me, so I started browsing around. Looks like the HTC one is about to hit stores, judging by the specs, that phone is certainly one to keep in mind.
Thanks for those suggestions. That HTC One is getting some really good reviews. I found some sprint threads that suggest the release will be in the end of April. But I'm wondering if it will be released at the $100 price point??? I'm a cheap ass and won't pay more than that for a phone.
The Galaxy S4 comes out in about 2 weeks. I've been using BBs for the last several years so I'm looking to change too. I'm going to look at the S4 and the Z10, not sure what else I'll look at. Email is the biggest concern which is why I've stuck with BB. I get about 200 emails a day I have to read and reply to.

That's not true. Android phones are updated constantly. The Samsung Galaxy S2 came out like 6 months ago and now the S3 is out. iPhones are usually good for 2 years on their cycle.

Yeah the one looks bad ass! Unfortunately it will likely be around the $199 price range with new 2yr agreement, so I doubt it would meet your price point. Not sure how flexible Sprint is, but when I picked up my DNA 2 weeks ago, I just told the sales rep at Verizon that $199 was not within my budget and he dropped it to $150.
