Got a new lower yesterday, and my LPK will be here hopefully next week. It is my first build from scratch. I don't want to scratch up the receiver and loose my mind trying to keep the detent and spring from flying across the room.

Does anyone have the tool I can borrow?

Side note once installed how the F are you suppose to remove the detent once installed?

Use a small flat head to push the detent and sprig down.. Use a toothpick if you ever need to remove the detent.

Another trick you can try is finding a drill bit the same diameter, or slightly smaller, to hold the detent in and then when you install the pin it will press the bit out. Should work basically the same way as the tool, just use the blank end of the bit. Or if you want something that works the same way as the tool use a 1/4 clevis pin. If I remember correctly, you're not far from where I lived, and if so the Ace Hardware at Iliff and Buckley has them, I believe.

I used an Allen wrench. Flat on the detention just get as close to the pin size as you can and push the Allen wrench out with the pen

I have several tools. I built several of them one day when I was bored. They work pretty well.

You're welcome to have one if you want.

Just use the tip of a triangular razor blade, like the kind used in a box cutter, to hold the detent down while you push in the pivot pin. No need for a tool.

We had things called change bags that would allow you to work with the camera open to change film, data backs, bulk canisters etc.

In a reverse concept when assembling an AR lower you can put all your parts and lower in a clear heavy ply garbage bag so you can see what your doing but springs, detents and any other little parts that might be tempted to go flying and induce appropriate expletive vocabulary to be used - can't get away.

Its not Fool Proof, so I don't expect any admissions that this didn't work for you. [Luck]

If I remember, I'll bring you one next time we meet up. Maybe you can use it on your next build. [Beer]

See this $1.99 pivot pin tool
http://www.eaglearmory.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=276

ANY hardware store carries the same item only called a hitch pin for $0.75
I own 2 of them and they work great. OR you can buy this tool from any gun supply vendor for 3X the coast.

Until you think you know where the detent pin and spring landed. Never work where the floor is carpeted.

I've used a (thin) feeler gauge to hold the spring and detent depressed while sliding in the pivot pin. Just takes a bit of practice to depress the setup and slide the feeler gauge over, but once you do, it's cake...

I just finished my first lower build and ditto on the allen key, I only lost one detent as it shot across the basement somewhere... Note to self - always keep a couple of spare detents on hand when building a lower.

man, i never felt like it was necessary, maybe i got lucky, but i just used a flathead screw driver to hold it down and pushed the pivot pin in with ease.

I used to install the pivot pin with the help of a small screwdriver. But the tool is so much easier. Insert tool, drop the spring and plunger through the tool, depress plunger with a paperclip or similar item, rotate the tool 90 degrees, push the pivot pin in. Done. No need to try to hold the spring and plunger under tension while installing the pin.

My tool cost me nothing. Just took a 1/4" bolt I had laying around and cut the threaded part off and cross drilled a hole through it. I threw a small o-ring on it so the head of the bolt wouldn't scratch the receiver.

But, to each their own.
