View Full Version : RTD Security - Barney Fife Alert!

So I like to take my old jeep out around the neighborhood and check things out. I specifically stopped to look at a piece of the RTD Lightrail here in the area.
There were two RTD Security vehicles at the intersection I stopped at. Whatever, I parked and proceeded to walk over and check out the recent modifications to a station.
Mr. Fife (who was leaving the location) slams his Dodge Nitro into Park. (with the pimped wheels and stuff). Jumps out and gets in my face "What can we do for you?" (Hitler mustache and mirror Top Gun Sunglasses)
Nothing, just checking out the recent modifications/fixes to this station.
(this location has had open holes with re-bar sticking out for a long time!)
"Well you can't be here and I ask that you not cross the tracks." "It's an active construction zone!"
(but his Nitro is safe parked on the tracks in the construction zone)
Um ok, so I look around for a moment and go back to my beater jeep.
There are no caution tapes, warning signs or other items to indicate it's an unsafe location. Just some pieces of re-bar laying around.
I cruise the hood a few laps, making sure he's seen me at several light rail crossings. [ROFL1]
Man what a douchebag. Must have flunked out of the Academy somewhere else?
I wanted to do and say all kinds of things to this guy, but figured I'd get a trespassing ticket from this dork. Could have been so much different but this guy takes it over the top in the wrong direction in my opinion. I know there have been thefts of copper from the lightrail stations, but man.
I believe someone on the forum work(s)(ed) for RTD security, but can't remember who. PM me if you'd like.

Yep, no biggie, just ranting I guess. Some people. Just makes you a little scared of what they are doing out there sometimes.
RTD has had a lot of copper theft. Even if the guy was a Dick, at least they are patrolling. I don't want to subsidize tweakers stealing the light rail cables.

Completely understand, but guilty until proven innocent is not good for public relations.
Wackenhut is subcontracting to RTD . . . they are the guys in the white SUVs and brown uniforms who cruise the bus stops all day long asking people "Why are you on the bench?" With all due respect, half the bus stops on Colfax have junkies and homeless sleeping in them, and if it wasn't for the "Why are you on the bench" patrol they'd be camping there indefinitely.

Yep, sounds like the guy. I ride the bus to and from work, 9th inbound through GKI gang territory and Colfax home usually. I understand.
Just thought it was an interesting interaction with the security dude, since I don't really look or act like anyone that would be causing trouble.
Two more weeks and RTD is having a Bicycle Tour of the west corridor line, so they bettered get to work on finishing everything up. [Beer]

If you feel the need to publicly post what you did, I will do so as well. First, the name Wackenhut no longer exists. Secondly, the Dodge Nitros came stock with those wheels. Third, name calling such as "Mr. Fife," "Douchebag," and "dork" to describe one of my co-workers is unnecessary and particularly offensive when you use "Hitler." Its because of that kind bullshit name calling and disrespect that some security officers act like dicks (as do some police officers when you use "Hitler" to describe them). Oh and by the way, the felon with the gun on the light rail train last week didn't particularly "look" like someone that would cause trouble either. Rant over.
I personally dealt with more than 8 G4S RTD Security guards.
Majority of them were as professional as SRVP of S&P500 companies.

Speedysst, if you've worked security, then you should know well that there are a fair amount of douchebags who are attracted to security jobs. Anyway, all those rail crossings down 13th street have had open pits and uncapped rebar every where for well over a year now.

Wackenhut, someone else made that reference, I didn't get a detailed view of all the stuff embroidered on his uniform. What is looked like though.
What I did? I did nothing, and especially nothing to this security person. I was polite, respectful and never once called him names. I followed his every word, stood at a distance, looked at what I wanted to see and left. I did cross the tracks though, as it was an open and active intersection. (in my car)
Not all nitros came with those wheels, only the RT I believe. But this doesn't make any difference, was more of humor towards his actions and look with the vehicle. His actions for the situation were an extreme I feel, thus why I posted it. More for humor than anything else, as I really don't give a crap. Not cop bashing, nor security bashing, tough job, I get that, see it every day. But I do not give nearly as much respect to anyone in a public servant role who acts like as you say, a dick.
Descriptive items used were mearly brought on by his demeanor and look. Sorry for the reference to Hitler. I'll take that back. I apologize.
Felon on the train with a gun? So please describe this in further detail if you could. So it was an existing Felon with a gun, or become a Felon because he had a gun on the train? What did he do, show his gun? CCW is legal on RTD I believe. Maybe you can start another thread to this for our education. I'm truly interested. Yes, felons come in all looks, shapes and sizes, I see them everyday.
Peace?

No kidding, one reason I was particularly interested in this one site - it's been an open hole with rebar for a long time. They finally got to working on it, and I wanted to see what the deal was. Obviously a engineering change or over site for some reason. RTD Security couldn't do much about it anyway, but you'd think someone would have put more barricades around it or something.

That's probably true, but sometimes statements are made because of the actions observed, not the other way around. I can say with confidence that gnihcraes was certainly polite and respectful in this interaction. If you suspect otherwise, you don't know the man. Whatever insult these security officers may have taken in the past is not an excuse for unprofessional rudeness in this case. Gnihcraes acknowledged and apologized for his harsh post. Please, take his peace offering.

he used the word Hitler to describe a MUSTACHE and its a common description.
And anyone with an assertive or overbearing demeanor to excess accompanied with a sense of overcompensation is often referred to a barney Fife...Mall Cop, Security Guard or Street Cop

It went way over the top I believe in person and on this thread. :)
My bus was horribly late this morning. Karma I guess.

Well, since you had an RTD moment, I want to share the north Denver frustration of paying taxes for a transit system that serves the Hell out of south, east, and west Denver [Rant1]
2040 and we might see light rail. Somehow I think the line running to Lone Tree will need revitalization before then and no one up here will see any thing for the millions we have poured into the political bog known as RTD.
Back to your OP, did you consider just whipping it out and hosing down the wheels on that fancy ride [Tooth]
Also, it sometimes comes in handy to just play deaf when the private security walks up and you don't feel much like conversating. If you don't talk, or react in any way, most of the personnel will walk away. This of course assumes that you are not on posted private property.
Be safe.
Don't EVER get into a car accident with an RTD bus. They are self insured and are NOT members of arbitration. So that means when they tell you, "We're not paying for your totaled ride because buses have right of way at all times and can run a red light so it's your fault." There is no way you can fight against that ruling.

I have to agree with Monky on this one. If you get in an accident with the light rail it's your fault but if a bus runs a light at 8th and Lincoln hitting your vehicle, throwing it into a billboard stand, and killing 2 people in the car it's theirs. You can google that incident. It happened 2 years ago. My ex worked for the law firm that represented RTD at the time.

When do you think the new fitness video will be out? Perhaps he will teach some of his secret mall ninja techniques..... or perhaps his super-secret method of getting away with illegal transfers outside the gunshows?
Prob not a very good guy.

I've worked private security before... we were always trained from day one: Problem? Call the police. Security cannot do much of anything- hell most contracts do not even allow detaining suspects, that's what police are for. Basically security has two rules: Observe, and Report. [Coffee]
If you're armed security, don't even think about drawing your weapon unless you have a very good reason, they don't have that "special" person status that PD does.

Armed security (in the traditional sense) exists because they are more economical to employee than off-duty cops. There is not much more to be said.

In some sense, YES.
Depends on who "wrote" the insurance policy, some corporations/companies might have stricter policies than others.

Oh, I see where you guys are going here. Of course you can still sue RTD. My example was exaggerated as well. Don't get into an accident with RTD though, because as far as insurance goes, they are not easy to deal with.

I've heard about that... someone I know had their car sideswiped by a bus, they were legally parked, and instead of going through RTD they went through their own insurance, hoping for subrogation, and their insurance was only able to recover 25%. Too late now, but I would have said "lawsuit" because the person had to go through so many hoops and spend more money than needed because of the whole process (rental was rough too). A person making just over $1,000 a month having to spend almost an entire month's paycheck on their deductible was bad enough. Yet another reason I hate RTD and hate having to pay them just because 2 buses come up to Evergreen (Which I never have and never will use!).
Wow...first time I read this post. Unfortunate about the things that were said, considering I know the RTD officer involved. From my experience with him, he's a good guy and does his job well. All I can say, is there are always 2 sides to every story, in many cases what "really happened" is somewhere in the middle.

He might very well be a good guy, he never gave me a chance to find out. First impressions of him were over the top. I was polite, never rude, or called him any names, followed his instructions/orders. Then promptly left the scene. TRUTH. His rather quick exit of his vehicle, harsh demeanor and terse delivery of instructions were uncalled for. TRUTH.
Things could have been a lot different.
Hello.
Hi. How are you today.
Good, is there anything I can assist you with.
Neah, probably not, I'm just stopping here to check out what the recent changes were to the track since it had been an unfinished area for a long time now.
Ok, yes, it's been a work in progress. It appears to be under construction still, so be careful and don't get over in the area of their work. I've got to run along and check some other areas.
Ok, great, not a problem sir. Have a good evening.
You too.
I'll gladly stop and say hi to the gentleman if I see him again somewhere in the area, see if he has a different demeanor 2nd time around. (in a "Safe" area just so there is no reason for it to go any other direction but positive.)
Squeeze: I'm only a couple blocks from where this went down, send him over to my place if ya want, I'll gladly talk again to him as nice as I did the first time. (and I'm not being sarcastic) Truth. I'm a nice. guy. He just never tried to find out. Send me a PM.

Not always. Sometimes it is the truth (A), people trying to outright fabricate the truth (B). And, no "middle ground". Ask me how I know.
That reminds me, did you ever solved the case with the illegal 'tenant'?
I had one of those Dodge Nitro stuck in my front yard last winter. Yes being driving by the RTD security. God this guy was a fucking dumb ass. Guy said he was trying to turn around. In my front yard? Granted he pulled way the fuck off the road and slid all the way down into my fence. Then when I'm trying to help said dumb ass out of my yard and off my fence he gets close to the top and lets off the gas. Slides all the way back down. This happened several times. I really wanted to made comments about the guy being competent enough to carry a gun. He sure the fuck couldn't operate a motor vehicle. Finally when I was about ready to hook a chain to his piece of shit and drag it off my property he kept the gas down and I pushed him all the way into the neighbors yard. See lack of common sense here. At that point another security showed up he was stuck across the street. I went inside. Wow that guy couldn't find his ass with both hands but I guess he could observe and report somewhat.
P.S. If this was you I'd just keep quite.

Security is paid in cash to remove assholes. Regular LEO have policy, procedure and command staff. I love working security.
I know few federal building security people.
Funny how ~few% of federal employees treat them like a trash. I know at least 2 who are in MBA and law school. 1 that is in PhD program.
One day, one of those security guard might become their boss. It would be really funny to see.

Paid in cash.. right.. I'm sure the insurance required to be a 'security' business, that ANYONE would hire, unless they wanted to accept all liability for the 'stuff' that can be done to people.. would require people be paid on the books, which in turn would be the ONLY way they would get the insurance to cover their employees..
Nice try though.
