any members in walsenburg

Do any of you guys live in walsenburg. I might take a transfer for my job out tgere. Im not a big city guy so im thinking about it. Whats it like as far as living cost. Shooting rsnges, hunting ect.ect. Thanks.

I don't live there, but I worked ambulance there for several years. The cost of living is fairly low. There was an indoor shooting range out on the highway that shut down, but I am now hearing rumors that it is reopened. There are two shops there that sell guns, one is a pawn shop, the other is Hollowpoint Sporting goods. Her prices are a little high on some things, but she has deals as well. She is a super nice person, as is her husband. Shopping there is not that great. There is Safeway and another food market, and two Dollar stores.

For hunting, you have the national forest about 20-30 miles away on the Spanish Peaks. The Apishipa State Wildlife area is about 30 miles out east and is good for dove, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep. The Lathrop State park has good fishing, along with waterfowl and game hunting on and around Horseshoe Lake. I would say you would be within 40 miles of hunting all but moose. I have seen mountain goats on La Veta pass.

Don't do the bar thing. There are some really out-house bred individuals who have nothing to do but cause trouble.

We moved out to Trinidad FROM the Chicago Metro area and have never regretted it at all!!
I guess it just depends if you want to get away from the larger city and it's potential problems and can settle for a lazy LITTLE town like Walsenberg where there's not a whole lot to do unless you are satisfied with hunting, shooting, ATVing and a lot of other outdoor stuff. If you want to buy almost anything major, you may have to drive from Walsenberg up to Pueblo or we do have a Super WalMart down in Trinidad for the day-to-day type stuff. Of course being retired like I am, probably makes one hell of a big difference in location choices.
Also, the CCW is very easy/simple to get down in this area and open carry is NOT frowned upon......[Beer]

I'd get a place outside the city limits.I just looked at a house on realtor.com on 4 acres and they are asking $120K. I was there last week and it looked like they had some really nice lakes close by. 2 hour drive west gets you into some really nice mountain country. Looks like a great place if you value your own space, or want horses, etc.

I've done business with people in Walsenburg for many years, and also belonged to the (now defunct) Twin Peaks Metallic Silhouette Club east of town in the early 80s.

My understanding is that they don't take to outsiders easily, since most families have been there for generations. Make friends with a few locals though, and don't sct superior, and you'll likely be welcomed.

The Jerants, who own Hollowpoint, are very nice people and easy to get along with. Gerald competed with us at the club, so he's a shooter too.

Take a look at La Veta, just up the road a ways. It's a neat little town filled with retirees and aging hippies and deer. A winter commute from La Veta to Walsenburg could be dicey at times, though.

I don't know about that. Every time I asked someone that I was transporting, "What brought you to Walsenburg?" they would say their car broke down and they never left. You are right though, there are a lot of families that have been there for many generations.
