Well here goes my first post. I have an M&P 15 Sport that is bone-out-of-the-box stock. I am looking for some budget upgrades, something like optics/scope, bipod, rails, etc. I would really like to have some input from all of you as much more experienced on this platform than I. Will mainly be a plinker range gun and hopefully some varmint shooting as well

Buy quality items and you cry once by paying a tad more then generic products.
If you buy crap from Chinae, you will be dissapointed when you spend more money
on the same crap.

I'd start with some magpul items for the most bang for your buck. As for the items you mentioned they are not budget items expect at least $400 for a decent optic like aimpoint or eotech and about a grand for a trijicon acog. I wouldn't spend any less then $150 on a rail system Troy battle rail and vltor Cas-v are good options in this range. If these items are a bit more expensive then your budget allows for I would suggest you spend your money on ammo and get proficient with iron sights and get a good magazine collection.

Sling? You have one or need one? It's like a holster for a pistol. You need one so test a few out. See what others are using and buy what you like.

Are you shooting more than 300 yards? Yes, you probably want some magnification. No, you may want a red dot, but you would be just as well served to shoot irons.

Magazines? No questions here. Dollar cost average (buy what you can afford regularly) PMAGs in the colors of your choice. You can't have enough. They make great stocking stuffers or trade fodder when you think you have enough.

Stock up on ammunition. This should probably be first, but it seems so obvious it gets overlooked.

Shoot with a bunch of people and you will pick up ideas on what you want based on the kind of shooting you like.

Get to know the local shops. Go to Bear, Jensens, Bowers is great if you get to Denver. Keep an eye out for stuff here on the board. Your money will go quickly.

Be safe.

How about just shooting it as is and becoming proficient with the weapon? Buying a bunch of crap to hang off of it before you even know what you might 'need' usually results in a box of unused crap and wasted money. Resist the urge till you've had a lot of trigger time. Spend your money on ammo.

That said, if you must buy stuff:

1) A quality sling.
2) Lots of quality mags.

All the other stuff - optics, rails, bipod, etc are high dollar items and shouldn't be cheaped out on.

+1 and buy some mags. GM2 nailed it too. You never say 'this quality product sucks, wish I had a crappy version of it.'

I wish someone would post a picture of the over tacti-cool AR. It makes me giggle.

Mags, ammo, and lots of range time. Try squeezing an optic of some sort in there. [Beer]

Another thing less weight is better IMO grams turn to ounces, ounces turn to pounds, pounds turn to pain just remember that

A cheap upgrade I really like are a set of JP yellow trigger springs. They lighten it up just enough to take the edge of the trigger pull. That and get a pistol grip that fits you. I'm a Magpul MIAD fan since they have the different backstraps. A BAD lever is a pretty good addition, too.

All of these things are pretty cheap and make a noticable difference.

Lots of ammo...
And maybe a nice free float rail that will actually make it shoot straighter, not just for looks and to hang crap off it.
And some more ammo...

KISS

Works with rifles too.

Doesn't sound like I'm alone in my view on the AR rifles and the "KISS" principle:

I have an EoTech on one of them with MagPul sights. I'll usually swap out the trigger guard for a "winter" style guard from MagPul or RRA and maybe a new grip. That's about as "upgraded" as my rifle gets. Standard GI-style sling. No rail. No lasers. No lights. No tactical anything. My favorite is the Colt AR6520 lightweight Gov't Carbine. A2 sights, MagPul grip and trigger guard, standard GI sling.

My advice = lots of ammo and a about a half-dozen (to start) PMags.
