ok here is the deal. i have had a problem with a chicken robber for some time. he is really gun and people shy. i have bought a $450 call but i cant get him to come to it. i have never been able to get a shot off at him at less than 250yds at a full run and i guess im not that great of a shot at a running target.

i woke up this morning to the SOB standing at my fence, about 50yds, waiting for a chicken. not wanting to shoot at him running again i placed a clean shot off of my bed through the screen with my suppressed 10/22 and hit him right in the lungs. i did forget i had it loaded with subsonic ammo "for the rabbits that live under my house". he fell got right back up and ran like hell and yet one more time i took a few shots with my SIG 556 at about 200-300 yds. with the aimpoint i came close but no hits. wife would have killed me if i would have shot it in the house.

i feel bad that he was able to run off with out knowing for sure he is done for. do you think he will wander off and die? what are the chances he might live? i know the shot hit on the mark as my 10/22 is a tackdriver shooting MOA at 50 yds. i guess more than anything i'm hopeing i didnt make him more gun shy. i guess im bothered by the fact that i threw away all my hunting values to protect my chickens. i know they would be safer in a fence but being free range cuts down on feed and keeps my yard free of bugs and ticks. what do you think?

Shrap;

Coyotes are tough, but if you nailed him than I would think he was dead. Would have been good if you could have followed him and followed up with a 2nd shot if necessary to assure he was dead. No matter how big a pain he was, I hate to think he'll take a while to die. I'm no coyote expert but I would have to think if you nailed him with a lung shot, then he's gone.

I bet there's a few guys on this forum who would love to try and call that guy (or others) in, and with some of the expensive scoped AR's I see in the pics section, I'm sure they could get the job done. Maybe you should consider a dog calling day at your place.

Best of luck.

i tried to get him with a second shot. but he was too far off and running too fast i missed five times. i think i might need to have a few people over for some calling lessons. they come around 2am is the problem and they have been shot at alot. i hear shots almost every night. thats why i shot out the window instead of going out side. the window didnt leave enough room for a follow up shot. i hate to think he might be suffering as well. i have lost 25 chickens and a goose this year alone. last year they took around 35 chickens as well as my wifes ducks and her peacock. i'm worried they might take our rat terrier next. maybe ill see if some other ranchers will let us hunt their land as well so we can have a few spots to hunt from.

If you put a good lung shot on him he didn't make it very far trust me. Anytime you wan't to do some yote hunting let me know. I drew antelope again this year for that area. I have no idea how on earth I drew with 0 points but I did.

I know quite a few people out there that would let us hunt yotes on their land. One person who would gladly and probably thank us for it is Mr. Orcid I hunt antelope on his property. Every time I ask for permission he says the same thing if you see a yote shoot it.

Shrap do you know where the old school house is that somebody has remodeled and turned in to a home? Orcids place is about 1/2 mile north of that on the west side of the road. I have several other places we could get permission for also.

I will be heading out that way anyway to knock on some doors to get permission for antelope this year. Maybe we could do some yote hunting while im out there.

I'm not an expert Yote caller by any means, but I would be willing to help. I got a Yote to respond to an electronic rabbit distress call last weekend. I shot him at about 75yds with a 150gr winchester ballistic silvertip from my 300wsm.

The only animal I have ever lost was a single coyote earlier this year while goose hunting near Guernsey Wyoming. He bled a lot and I tracked him for about 2 hours. I guess steel T-Shot didnt have as much energy as I thought.

If you put a round in the lungs, chances are good that his buddies are eating him right now.

I shot him at about 75yds with a 150gr winchester ballistic silvertip from my 300wsm.Was that as spectacular of a hit as it sounds, or did the bullet zip through before fully expanding?

I shot him quartering away on a hill. The bullet entered in front of his left leg and exited out of his right lung. There was alot of damage to the internal organs, lost all of its blood, we did'nt find the bullet. The coyote was moving, got hit, turned around then dropped. Judging by the amount of trauma the bullet caused it probably expanded.

HunterCo:
Ever hunt antelope in Pawnee? I have SEVEN points up there and still haven't drawn. It used to be every other year. I'm wondering what's going on up there. I wrote the DOW but never got a response.

RYAN50BMG:
I'm fairly certain you need either a small game or a furbearer license to hunt coyotes legally. Maybe it's different on private property, someohe here will know. I never have connections so I'm always stuck to public land, and then you do need a license

i would be down for a hunt. im about 5 miles north and 2 miles west of yoder. between judge orr and 94. i have 40 acres and we can shoot on to around another 200 acres around me. the cattle rancher next to me is down for us shooting on to his land and the guy behind him has about another 200 that we should be able to call them from. the only down fall if these coyotes are very shy to people. a freind of mine is tring to get acess to another 300 acres to hunt. if you know a few other places to try it should make for a good time.

i'm not sure it would be worth the drive to just hunt my property. some of the ranchers are a little leary of me because i am so heavly tattooed. peoples first impression of me is not so good unless they really sit down to talk to me. so approaching some of the old timers dosent work so good for me. i'm not sure about needing a license either. i also have a small shooting range if the hunting turns out to not be so hot. about 80yds or so. hunter let me know when your heading out this way. i would love to learn some tips for calling them in. so far i have got 2. one in my boxers and the other in a bathrobe. every time i set out to get get one i get skunked.

wonder what a 50 does to a yote??

A 750 AMAX at 820 yards didnt open up, although the coyote was DRT.

A 800 Barnes VLD or maybe a Harlow solid did the same thing at about the same range.

You don't need massive firepower. Set the call as far away you can get get it, set up a hide, and wait. Coyotes, espically the talented ones, can see and smell far better than we take for granted. They often circle the call, looking for trouble.

My 2 cents from a couple Wiley expeditions...

better than that pop a rabbit and set him out in the field and watch it

Thats why I really like either a 12 gauge loaded with #4 buck or a 6-284.
