Thinking about getting a k5 blazer...what do you all think for shtf/emp. Here's the add:

Surprised it's that cheap, check carefully but the K5 was a tank.

I love K5's. Motor looks clean, make sure it dosen't smoke. Good wheeler.
If it has electronic ignition (I mean an ignition module), or a PCM, it is not EMP resistant. Looks pretty clean though.

Will it pass emission requirements? You serious about EMP? Get a magneto ignition! Another serious note about EMP, is have a grounding clamp near where you park, and ground the truck frame to earth ground. Auto transmission probably needs a large transmission fluid cooler added in front of the A/C condenser coil. You are gonna probably want to drain all the fluids, and transmission pan included. Is there a date code on the coolant hoses? Don't buy it if he won't let you test drive it down the interstate! I have had a few C/K series Chevys...do you have another $1000 for stuff that probably needs doing? Brake hoses, spark plugs, coolant hoses, valve cover gaskets, etc. A/C is R12 type and very expensive to repair.
Sure you don't want a real CUCV? This one sounds better...

that's why i posted this, i gotta figure out what i need to get. Not real familiar with the k5 line, but gotta learn it. Any other ideas? I like the idea of the diesels, but don't those have the electronics in em? I need some help from you experts out there...Selling my hybrid tomorrow, and gonna roll it into a blazer/bronco/international that I can trust for a shtf....let me know!

if you want diesels just get a 12v cumins. there's a nice one in chyenne on craigslist now.
gas k5s kinda suck in my opinion too wide for jeep trails too short to tow with. then again all the trails I've seen in co are 2 width jeep trails compared to the pnw.

Anything pre 73 is the ticket, minimal if any emissions, point & condenser ignition. Dig up an inline 6 ford pick em up, or binder with a 345 cu in motor. You worried about an emp? looking in the wrong closet. Think economic issues vs, emp burst over the US.
I'd lean towards food supply and water contamination way before foreign or domestic attack.
Then again we have already been invaded by a foreign country. China hold paper on say 40-55% of Americas .gov debt.

Get a 1st gen dodge cummins they are tough as nails and are as emp proof as it gets I have 308000 miles on mine. Also they get better mileage then the crappy 6.2 I get about 18mpg average

what year is your dodge?
they stop the first generation at 98. 98.5 is second generation.
If you buy a '78 or earlier Blazer, they are emissions equipment exempt...classified as a Heavy Duty (6200lbs). '79 that changed. As long as it is tuned correctly, it passes the sniffer test.
I know someone selling a 77 highboy been stored most of its life but its got a 460 in it gets 6 city 8 highway.

what year is your dodge?
93 it only requires 2 wires to run all mechanical baby. And actually 1st gen is 89- 93 but 89-91.5 were non intercooled so I prefer 91.5-93 standard trans only. Second gen is 94-2002 but the mighty 12valve is 94-98 these trucks would also be emp proof or solar flare proof and they are also the most desirable because they have the p pump. And the holy grail would be the 1998 12valve 4x4 it's 1/2 year only it has the rear doors that open and is has bigger valves and the injector pump i think has bigger delivery valves and it is rated at 215hp instead of 190hp. But a nice 1998 12 valve is hard to find and they will cost you I searched for a year and finally found my dad a 98 short bed extended cab white sport package fully loaded 5 speed 120k and he gave 10 grand. My brother has 2x4 dually that is a 1998 and he gave 7grand

You could buy the K5 blazer. Drive it. Buy a Cummins 4BT diesel later. Then install the Cummins 4 cyclinder when you are ready. They make bell housing adaptors to bolt the Cummins directly to the Chevy transmission. I read guys were getting over 30 mpg on this little diesel. The Cummins 4BT was in some of the older bread trucks and aluminum bodied delivery vans. Or you could go Cummins 6 cyclinder like this guy...

How much are those Cummins 4BT diesels? I wonder if one would fit in my Amigo? Never mind. Not allowed to swap a motor into a vehicle that is newer than the motor right?

I tried and I tried.. I even begged Graves if he can hook me up w/ one. No go. UPS/ROYALCREST/MEXICAN Food truck fleet apparent destroyed their vans upon retiring them. You may get lucky w/ craigslist and ebay.. but the jeep guys whom I know that have swapped into 4bt bought crate engine. Conversion can be in the upward of $8000. And the holy grail would be the 1998 12valve 4x4You rang? [Flower] And yes it is a 5 speed. LS in back and a brake on it. I paid $10K for it in 2001 and it now has 175K on it. And I have driven it with no electrical. You have no dash, lights but as long as that solenoid is wired open it will run until the fuel runs out. That is it. One could take the batteries out and bump start it if ya had to. My alt went out miles from home. I jumped it to start and locked the solenoid with safety wire.
Lost the dash and lights a few miles down the road. drove another 80 miles and it never missed a beat. [Coffee] When I got home I cut the wire and it promptly shut off telling me that I had less than 6V in the system.

she gets about 26mpg average but some people get into the 30s and as for reeliabilty ive seen some dudes get over 500,000miles and more so I would say yes they are verry reliable and proven. Also they are verry easy to work on since they are inline 5 cylinder and the germans know what they are doing so everything just makes sense. I have fallen in love with the old Mercs. also the 240d has a 5 speed but it doesnt matter because everything is controled by vacume on these cars inuding the tansmision.

Good choices brother just make sure you look over them awesome rides real good but I think the dodge might be a auto if so don't touch it with a 10 foot pole DODGE CAN'T MAKE A GOOD AUTO plus they are electronicly controlled so in a emp or solar flare you might go 35 mph. 5speed gets better mileage also

Or just get a 5 speed one thing you should be aware of though is the nv4500 has been known to have the 5th gear ring nut back off and you loose 5th gear. It is caused by lugging the truck in 5th gear. It can be fixed 3 ways 1st ring nut retainer clip 2nd you can weld the nut to your input shaft this is the best way if you plan on building the tranny later on 3rd get all new billet interals and have a bullet proof tranny

There are some things about the 12V Dodge that one needs to be aware of Like the 5th gear nut and the dowel pin and the return hoses but all in all with a little TLC they are damn near bullet proof.
Other than one alt and a repair on hoses mine has been trouble free for over 10 years. [Coffee]

Just get up 30-40 and back out of the throttle. Then push the button and it should be very clear the change. . Mine is on/off with a switch and vacuum operated.
When on it engages anytime you back off the throttle but I have seen manual ones. They are very useful on the Dodge. [Flower]

That is sad. I had work done on my front end after I bought it. I still remember the guy telling me the change in price on the drag link. [Bang]
I do have one new issue that will be hard to track down but I may just shotgun it and be done. Had the leak on the return hose that I fixed but now I have the "not holding fuel after 2 days" issue. I think the best way is just to replace the lines and be done with it.
All in all the $$$ I have spent in repairs is minor compared to the time I have had it. It was my daily driver for 6 years and that was not good on it since it is only 4 miles to work. [Flower]
