Does anyone know where I can find some snakeshot (rat shot or whatever you want to call it) for a 500 S&W? and can you even shoot this stuff though a ported barrel-not repeatedly for practice but for an actual snake or will using it even once mess my gun up?

I've used it a few times in a few of my guns, but none were ported. I doubt it would hurt, but I wouldn't use it without knowing for sure. Oh, BTW, OMFG IT LIVES!!! [Shock] Still in Idaho? How's school there? Lots of flying yet? When do I get my "Ride along" buddy ol' pal? [Muaha] Karl.

Speer makes empty shot capsules that you can load with what ever will fit in the capsule. The problem is the capsules are in .38, .44 and .45 diameters.

There is a cap (base wad) that fits into the capsule to keep it in the capsule until you fire the round. Upon ignition of the round the plastic capsule explodes and the cap or base wad is what delivers it down the bore....so a comp or none it will work fine. The expansion of the shot is about 1" of spread for every foot out the barrel.

Here's a link to Cabelas site and the options that CCI offers:

If you are out toward Falcon/Peyton I'll give you a few loaded in 38 Special....about 15 years ago I bought 1000 capsules and will never be able to shoot them all. They have #9 shot in them.

If you are interested PM me.

I guess I should change my profile, I'm in Columbus MS now... I don't reload, so I guess I need to find someone around here that does, might me kind of hard since I'm spending 85-90 hours a week with my job. Has anyone out there tried to load snakeshot into a pistol round that's not in one of the pre made diameters or knows where I can find one that’s 0.5 diameter?

Karl, I've been having a blast down here, its really busy, but a lot of weeks I'm getting 5-9 sorties/week in the mighty T-37 Tweet. Even had a few area solos (yes, the Air Force let me take a twin engine jet out to a MOA and do advance aerobatics buy myself!) At the end of next week I should be starting formation so I'll see if I can fly 3 feet away from another jet at 220 mph and not kill myself.

So no ideas how to do this? I'm thinking about trying to use a regular 500 brass case just make a wad to go between the powder and shot and somehow cover the end with a piece of plastic with stress cuts, but I really don't what to experiment with my gun to find out if this works, so if anyone has ideas they want to throw out there please feel free to do so

You should be able to use a muzzleloader shotgun supplies.

Here is the load sequence:
pistol powder
over-powder (heavy card) wad
fiber cushion wad
optional shot (thin card) wad
shot
over-shot wad

I would hesitate (over-kill) to use the heavy and thin card wads and just use a fiber cushion wad and an overshot wad. To keep it a little more secure you might want to seal the outside end over-shot wad with a little wax....key here is a little...very little.

I would use the Speer data for their shot capsules in 44 mag as a start for powder volumes. Obviously you won't be a able to build pressure to do any damage to your gun with an over charge...just complete deformation of the shot creating an inconsitent pattern.

Speer manual #11 page 461
44 Magnum with 7.5,8 or 9 shot
Powder.......................Weight(Grains)....... ..........Velocity
630............................10.0............... ................1054
231.............................7.3............... .................1133
Unique.........................6.8................ ................1097
Bullseye.......................6.0................ ................1101
HP38...........................6.0................ ................1061
700X...........................5.7................ ................1105

thanks, I had no idea where to try and go with this. I'm going cross country this weekend and will have my instrument check next week, so it might be a while before I can try this, but I will let everyone know just how much #9 shot you can fit into a 500 round

Guess I just don't understand why you'd want to hunt snakes with a massive gun like that. I'd go for something much smaller and lighter, unless you're after anacondas or pythons.

Still haven't had a chance to try this yet, been too busy learning how not to kill myself flying, rondog, I bought the gun when I was in ID to carry when I went small game hunting, now I want to hunt wild boar with it here (yes a little overkill, but I'm too cheap to by a .44) and I want to have something for the snakes that this state (Miss) has.
