Hello Everyone,

I apologize if this has been asked already – but I’m curious about answers (and why) to these questions:

Scenario 1: Major natural disaster strikes and you have room for only one rifle and one pistol to take with you. Which rifle would you take (and why), and which pistol would you take (and why)?

Scenario 2: Major rioting is occurring in the inner city and you HAVE to make your way into town to pick up/protect an elderly family member. Which weapons do you bring with you (and why)?
I’m curious about make and caliber along with reasons. If you don't own the weapons you'd like to bring with you, list what you'd like to have vs. what you own.

1) we are not going anywhere. if needed to relocate we have items ready to go, guns, that's my business

2) there is not one person i know of in the inner city, anywhere near us.Nor anyone i would risk my health & safety for.

3) perhaps better off posted in the survival / discussion forums. Where IIRC there was one of these already going.

well at least it isn't a football thread, though you don't specify the reason for the riots :)

handgun wouldn't change, P228. It works, I trust it, good holster, etc.
Rifle probably would:
A trip in a vehicle for recovery probably a folding AK. short & handier. Weapons would be out of sight but handy. My experience with the King LA riots says the action is isolated and there is a good chance of nothing happening. Wouldn't want to draw attention with a gun.
something more major (why am I leaving again, I'd want to hole up) I'd take the FAL. Its a heavy beast but I know it well.

Plan to hunker down right where I am but guns? Folks on this board tend to fall victim to a lot of boating accidents, tragically they went down with the boat...

SBR AR-15 in 5.56 and Glock19 for both scenarios. Keep it simple, stupid.

I'd bring what I have since that's what I train with. My 14.7" PSA midlength, and my Walther PPS.

Might not have the most capacity or best ballistics but bringing a weapon you have minimal training with is not the greatest idea.

I would stick with my 1911 and an AK in either situation. I trust the reliability on both more than anything else I own.

I keep an 870 and a 92PT in my car along with my survival pack plus my CCW firearm. If I am not at home, I have these supplies and tools to get me home.

Scenario 1: Unless my home is burning, this is where I go and I have what is in my car to get me there. If I am at home and need to leave, I would take one of my AR-15s + (spare bolt carriers) and (92F)…5.56 and 9mm equals lots of ammunition and parts out there (civilian, law enforcement, and military), and it is light so I can take a large quantity of ammunition . I have an ’87 ¾ Suburban and pop-up (or tandem axle car trailer)…I can take a lot so doubtful I would not have a shotgun and bolt rifle plus lots of ammunition for all of them. If I am forced out, my alternative site is my sister’s ranch in western Colorado.

Scenario 2: No family members near any city. I would not go anywhere near the city. If I am stuck in it, I have what is in my car to get me out.

Great posts - for me weapon and caliber are important.

I'd choose Glock 19 and AR-15 due to function and availability of ammo/spare parts. AK-47 makes lots of sense to me as well, but mine is chambered in .308 and it's quite heavy. Gotta figure on traveling light and fast.

No matter where I'm going - I have a nice little Kel-Tec SU-16b that folds up real nice to give me a bit of "reach out and touch" - but I agree, only leaving my residence if I had to go...

All the prepper stuff makes me smile - they even have prepper foods at Costco now.

All the food and water in the world won't matter if you have no way to defend yourself :).

Great answers! Interesting thoughts behind them as well. There really iis no "right" answer...

I had to laugh when watching a prepper show on TV last week. One older prepper couple was (on national TV) showing all the provisions they have in their home, then explained how they don't have any guns, because it's not who they are. Now that they've broadcast it, guess where the bad guys are headin when the SHTF. [Smart]

Well, since I sold most of my guns to pay for car repairs, I'll just rely on my 5-shot .38 snub and stay at home with my cupboard full of canned soup and start filling sandbags. Then, when the looters show up and fall into the punji pit, I'll just take whatever guns they're using. [Tooth]

nor I that lives there but I treated the question as an oh crap situation. get a call and someone is stuck. (though they'd be best off just staying inside with head down)

I'd go with gas piston ar rifle and 40 S&W pistol. Maybe a 12ga pump with buck for doors...

Scenario 1: 16" 5.56 AR, because A. It's my only rifle at the moment (sad, I know), and B. Familiarity and commonality. Plus my Springfield 1911, because it's what I've been training with, and what I'm most comfortable and accurate with.

Scenario 2: 16" AR and 1911 again, same reasons. I'd also have my .40 cal SIG 229 handy as a tertiary, and if I had a trusted person willing and able to ride shotgun, I'd give them my tacticool 870 Super Mag, and maybe the SIG.

Simple answer: Baby Eagle in 9mm (my EDC gun) and my AR in 5.56. Echoing the thought of others: Gonna take a damn good reason for me to leave my home, and an even better one to go wandering around the urban shithole that is Downtown.

For scenario one, I would have my AR that I'm building with my two uppers (458 Socom & 223), and my USP 45. I would carry the same for #2 also (I have a cool backpack that holds one rifle with and upper). I would take the USP because in any SHTF scenario, you need a gun that works, and might have to work continuously without a cleaning for a long time while being able to take a shit load of potential abuse, and for that, you can't bean an Hk. The AR is because it has a lot of different applications, and well, it's my only rifle currently. If I had it my way, I would change out the AR15 for an AR10 with two different uppers, one in 308, and one in 300 WSM.

I don't bug into big cities, that's just asking to get killed.

If I HAD to go for some unfathomable reason. Short AR and G19.

Chose the glock over the USP, XD, Beretta, M&P, 1911 for 2 reasons Reliability+ highest capacity (30rd mags)

Chose the AR over the AR-10, FAL, SKS, Bolt gun for compact length and capacity.
Chose the AR over the AK for comfort of shooting, and accuracy if needed.
Chose the AR over pistol caliber carbines for range and precision if needed.

I just wish I had a catalog of guns like that to have to make the choice.

+1 me too. I would also bring my 3 buddies I train with. The medic, the muscle and the boss. And like the rest, the first question is why would we leave. Hunker down and defend the fort.

I'd choose Glock 19 and AR-15 due to function and availability of ammo/spare parts.

In even a mild disaster, you can't so much as find a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread on the shelves and most gas stations are pumped dry within the first six hours of the event or forecast thereof. Pray tell, where are all the gun part & ammo vendors that are open for business during these SHTF scenarios that I read of?

Ha! Ha! Ha! Nobody is open for sure, but you can "obtain" ammo. It's all a scenario for sure - but in a real world situation, I'd like to have something on my hip I could easily resupply with - so no 5.7 or the like for me.

Never owned an AR pistol, but was looking at a few recently. G19 for me (ammo), but I love the G23, G30 and G26 as well.

AR - yeah, I like the AK platform, but the AR is light, fast, and sweet.

4 of us run the same set up, for the most part. I have 2 19's as well as a few of us. We all have multiple ARs. Availability is what you have on hand (parts drawer) or back ups.

I think the Darwin award will be rewarded to those that decide to rob a gun store. Just saying.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I hear ya... I'd never rob anything, that just makes me as bad as the rioting hordes... If I were stuck in a city (and I agree, last thing I'd do is head into one), I'd rather have a weapon that I could feed easier than one I could not.

It's all a scenario, and I agree, robbing a gun store would be stupid. If I had anything to barter with, I'm guessing 9mm would be easiest to obtain - but again, all a thought exercise (thankfully).

So some key takeaways from the thread so far:

1911's or Glocks - more folks w/the latter, but both were represented (as well as other models)
Caliber isn't a concern for many
ARs mentioned the most so far...
NOBODY is heading into the city...
Gotta wonder how it went down for folks in New Orleans...

#1
Sig P228, 9mm
Armalite AR15, .223

Why, my Sig never fails, and uses NATO/Common ammunition.
Dito on the Armalite.
I might consider the G19, common to find an extra mag/ammo for if needed. (security, police, etc)

Not sure that I'd go rescue anyone. (If they were inner city) If Rioting is active, no reason for me to be there.

Not sure I'd take any long guns, AR or Shotgun with me into inner city major rioting. Too easy to have the weapon used against me. What can I possible do with a weapon against a crowd of people.

Go watch the LA riots on youtube, doesn't look like anyone wins.
