I highly doubt there are any decent ones out there. You can get a good 1-4 for that price, though. Burris makes a some and I keep seeing more of them actually in use by satisfied customers.

Going up to 6 will cost you some bucks. After a couple quick searches it looks like even 1.5 and 2-6 scopes start at $1000. There's a couple 1-8 scopes out there but they're upwards of $2000.

I'm in the middle of the same thing myself, and the above is all correct. The Leupy 1.5 - 5X runs $900, and is probably as close as you'll get. It appears to be very nice.

Burris MTAC 1-4x is the best bet on a 1-4 for under $1K. Until you pass $1K, there are not quality 1-6x optics. 1.5-6 and 2-7 you can get, but not 1-6.

If no one in your area has one you can road test come on up for the day. I have nikon's & 2 mtac's, just mounting one on the gallil and th eother is on me wife's ar. Also have a 332 was looking at selling and going to the 556. Burris is local and i can literally be there in 10 minutes. Not to take away from the ACOG's, have had a few myself, should have kept them, but, hey people sticking presidential advisers in my face, what's a po boy to do?

The wife went from a red dot (no magnification) to the MTAC and last range outing she was 85-100% hits on 12 x 12 steel @ 100 yds, based on rounds fired per mag - hits. Considering she has not ran her guns for say 6 months and was doing average of 50-60% with a non magnified dot, we are both very happy with the results. Not only that we were road testing some first time reloads. Her shooting day was very positive and going to do another "family day" soon.

Pretty sure you meant Burris MTAC there jim. I didn't think you had any Nikon optics.

I have used all of the MTACs now and the 1.5-6 is a pretty decent optic. The reason I use 1-4s on my ARs is that the number of targets that are close and fast far exceed those that are past 400 yards. The true 1x on the 1-4 is so much faster than the 1.5. Also, on the 1.5-6, the FOV is much less than the 1x...you actually feel like it is less at 1.5 than 2 due to the way the scope is set up geometrically. Plus, I've hit every target past 400 yards this year, most on the first round, so I don't need extra magnification above the 4x.

I have played with the 1.5-6 on my .450 Bushmaster and my .308 bolt gun...went to the 1-4 on the .450 and the 4.5-14 on the .308. Even hunting, I like the 1x on the .450 when still hunting and such. I am not going to be shooting it at anything small and 300 yards is about max. For the .308, I don't plan to use it in the woods, but will use it for some medium range precision matches and maybe some hunting out to maybe 400 yards. The 6x is not enough for 1 MOA targets out at 400 yards and beyond, so I needed more there.

The 1.5-6 landed on my Open AR-15 project rifle that will also have a red dot for the close in stuff.

About three months ago I put a Nikon P-223 3-9x rifle scope on my Colt M4. Price was $199, and at the time Nikon was offering a $30 rebate. I have been very satisfied with its performance. It's been knocked around and flown across the country on my M4, and has retained it's zero. On a recent shooting trip to AZ, I was shooting ~1" groups with M855 green tip ammo at 200 yards (hitting small tannerite targets, too) with it.

Also, the objective lens is big enough that I can shoot it with both eyes open. A nice little feature is the adjustment turrets that allow you to easily reset it back to your original zero if you have made adjustments in the field for distance/windage. Great scope for me with my near-50 year-old eyes! Overall, very happy with this scope, and wouldn't have any hesitation recommending it as a good option for someone on budget.

Downside? Well, some people might think it is a little large (see photo below), but that doesn't both me. Also, the way that I mounted it made it a bit difficult to readily grab the original charging handle, so I added a BCM Mod 3 handle with the large paddle. The BCM handle helps a lot (see other posts on this forum for "BCM"), but it will bite, so I generally wear Mechanix gloves when shooting. An illuminated reticle would be nice, but then we're talking about a higher price point. Next year, I'll get a QD mount for it and an EOTech with QD, so I can swap them out.
