View Full Version : For the Electronic Hobbyists

Came across this.
Would be pretty cheap to add parts to a good crystal radio to your preps. Would be absolutely one of those things to get the young kids involved with and a foot in the door with a good prepping skill for them.
What is everyone's thoughts? Am I beating a dead horse? Or is this completely a dumb idea?

Huge amount of work, so it looked to me. Kids have too many other distractions to be interested in that much studying.
I'm sure it all works as intended in the reading I did of it.

..and thus succinctly encapsulates the issues with today's youth.
Every child should make their own radio. Its trivially easy to do and it teaches them so much about the world.
I started out this way with the old Tandy kits(Radio Shack)
I would love to get a hold of a couple more to get for my kids but I dont think Radio Shack has anymore radios-funny as to how that's how they got their name.[Bang]
I feel it's a great way for the kids to learn on all levels-most of all to see something they built actualy work.

They do have electronic project kits. I have bought a few, the components snap together with what looks like buttons. Good for the younger children so they don't hve to deal with ires and smaller parts.
I do agree that this is how children in this day and age are going. However, it is my job as a parent to sometimes not worry about disappointing my children or making them do something they don't want to do to prepare them and give them an edge later in life. I am not interested in being my childrens' friend. I am here to prepare them for life. If I have to have them do some "mandatory fun" then so be it.
My task in the link would be to read up on it... do it myself, and sit down with my children, teach them and give them the knowledge on how it works. Making it as fun as possible in the process.
Is there a local Radio Shack that has them?Or is it something most of them carry out here?
New York didn't carry the kits, but they can sell you a cheesy cell phone contract.

Be careful. I will teach them how to build things. With a soldering iron. [Flower]http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/jerrymrc/audio/canning355Medium.jpg
Fun for kids. Hardly practical for survival use.
The levels of signal you will be looking for wont even register on one of those devices unless the broadcast is on your block, or they have a commercial antenna broadcasting for them.

Its a way to start the kid's out to learn and go on to bigger better things.
True the signal will be weak, but it would be usefull for local trafic.
Remember the movie Stalag 13? The guy with one leg with the radio in the pants leg? It was better then nothing.

This^^^^ Got to get them going somehow. [Beer]
I bought one of those kits from Radio Shack in college and put it together. I immediately forgot about it and it was way less cool than I anticipated.
