The Noveske Multi-Gun Championship is slated for April 3-6 at Colorado Rifle Club. This will be USPSA Level 3 match. Lots of very cool things planned in terms of sponsors and such. Details will be released as they are confirmed.

Will need a few stage designs from experienced 3Gunners and about 30 total match staff, so if you are interested in working the match, drop me a note.

Mark, will the cost of the match be the same as it was last year? Can't wait to shoot it this year!

Probably will be $150, was $125 in 2012.

To put this match in comparison, I just shot the AR15.com Pro/Am 3gun in Kentucky about a month ago and also shot this match this year. Aside from the prize table, the Colorado Noveske match was far above a better match in terms of fun and giving shooters a shooting challenge based on their own skills to solve, something that was sorely missed at that Bigger match.. This match is one you don't want to miss.

I agree. I shot Larue the weekend before the Noveski CO state match. The Larue match was a massive production which was obviously worked very hard on to put together and the organizers derserved more credit than they received for the sheer magnitude of that event. That being said... the stages at the Noveski match were way, way better. They were certainly more creative, challenging and more fun. I have already blocked off time on the calender for this match 2013. Also, it shouldn't be about prizes, but often is. There were about 70 competitors at this match 2012 and I think I remember hearing that there was something in the ballpark of $50k on the prize table and Noveski was happy enough with the match last year to pick it up again this year. Pretty good support for a first year, smallish match in a state not really known for it's competitive shooting (at least in multigun).

I can't give out details until they are confirmed, but this year will be better on all the fronts you all enjoyed. It won't be the biggest, but I am sure it will sell out this year.

3 weeks earlier should make the weather be a bit more behaved...

Mark,
I'm planning on hitting up your 1 March training and the 2 March 3G. As a complete novice, what's your thoughts on signing up for the USPSA membership and the Noveske 2G?
I don't care if I come in dead last, I'm just interested in getting out there but if I can save $30 and sign up now I would probably do it.

(side note: how to we officially register for the March 3G?)

thanks

The March stuff, we'll get that later as we get closer and make sure the weather complies.

As for the Noveske match...If you shoot and live in Colorado and don't sign up, you have made a big mistake. The shooting/stages won't be simple, but anyone with a bit of skill should be able to complete the match no worries. There will be some clinics on Friday monrning as well. You will learn more shooting one major than shooting 10 local matches. The majority of people who shot it last year who also shot other majors have told me it was the best match they shot in 2012.

The first batch of competitors is loaded into match self squadding on USPSA.org (http://www.uspsa.org/squadding/index.php?action=list&indx=233). We will load another batch next week.

If you did not get a notificaiton e-mail, you did not provide one or we have the wrong one associated with your USPSA membership.

Remember, Fri/Sat shoots BOTH Friday and Saturday afternoon. Sat/Sun shoots BOTH Saturday and Sunday Morning.

If you shoot Fri/Sat and leave, I can get your prize and ship it to you, or you can have a buddy walk for you.

Since I know this far in advance (though specific details would be nice), I don't mind working it (hauling, loading, etc) if you need a decently strong pair of arms and a back. I've never been to one so the experience (watching) could be fun. Let me know if ya need the help. I'll need to be paired with someone that knows what is going on though... I'm a newb.. hahaha.

You will learn tons by working. Seeing a stage design from the inside and then helping build it, with exposure to the thought process behind the design is a real eye opener. Some times it looks as though the targets are just sort of scattered around out there for you to shoot at, but most of the time (and certainly at larger matches) the designer put a lot of thought into how to force the shooters to do demonstrate certain skills. Shooting on the move, popper/mover timing, speeding up and slowing down, managing ammo in your shotgun or just plain how fast can you burn it down... All part of the thought process. Designers will often design in subtle challenges, like "do I take the targets through this window or do I hook the wall and take them on the move?" "Do I take the slug reload at the slug target, or do I candy cane?" "Do I take the 100yd rifle targets off hand, kneeling or prone?" More experienced shooters will seize opportunities to shave valuable time, where less experienced shooters might not even know to look. During the match, you not only get an opportunity to see the gear everyone is using, you also get to watch them break down your stage and then run it. You would think that as the competitors get better and better, they would all start to see the one best way to run a course of fire and all naturallly migrate to that one best way, but the opposite is true. I watched Jerry M, Michael V and Daniel H all break down a stage I was working, completely different. They shot it similar, but there were differences in possitions and footwork which were thought provoking. Little details stood out, such as; Daniel brought 3 mags out with him on the walk. He used them to check clearances both under his rifle and also which mag would get him over the hump in the ground while monopod. It was so simple and I never ever thought of that before seeing him do it. Many competitors got to that spot that day and were skipping rounds off the ground. When the experienced guys got there, they all magically had the correct magazine in the gun to monopod over the rise or to get into possition, without the magazine interfering with the branch. If you pay attention, you will learn more in a few days of working a match than the whole rest of the year. I love to shoot the match and ultimately, that is why I am there, but working the match is a huge draw for me as well because it's really interesting seeing the inner workings, stage designs, competitors, gear, thought processes. Watching competitors and staff solve problems is very thought provoking and helps me with my problem solving skills outside the match. This might sound a little deep, but the skills translate directly to my work as a lean/efficiency expert/industrial engineer. Time management, rule interpretation and how the differences between individuals impacts the end results at the match and at work are not so different. Good stuff for sure.

Ok ladies and gents. The Noveski multigun match is now only 6 weeks away. Time to poop or get off the pot. Get those applications in ASAP or you will miss out on the opportunity to purchase match ammo. You should run something in the ball park of a couple hundred rounds each of rifle and pistol and Freedom is gonna let us buy up to 500rds of 223 and 9mm, at what they claim will be good prices. Just the opportunity to shoot one of the biggest matches in the state and walk away with a few hundred rounds for your hungry beast should be a pretty big draw. Last year's match was excellent and this year should prove to be even better. Sponsorship for last year's match was also off the chart. I won a set of the really cool ESP electronic ear plugs last year and now I don't know how I lived without them for so long. This match will be fast and furious, but it will be doable by everyone (Mark made me pull an especially challenging feature off my stage, claiming I made it too scary for the general crowd). Anyway, my point is, you don't need a fancy $3k rifle or pistol to hit 5moa targets and with the longest shots at only 200yds, anyone with even a little rifle experience should be able to hit everything. Mark wanted to make sure that anyone with a basic 16" carbine, an 1100 and a factory glock would be able to get it done. Get signed up and come have some fun. It will be a great way to kick off the shooting season.

Oh, and here's a shout out for the guys who want to keep it real. There are only 4 guys signed up for Heavy Metal and I just can't believe that we are the only He Men around. If can scrounge up a few hundred rounds to run through your 308, dust her off and put some rounds down range. One of the HM shooters will be running an M1 Gerand in 30-06. He wins all the respect right off the bat. And speaking of respect. The HM garner respect just for showing up with the big guns. My close buddy Frank is planning to shoot, just cuz he wants to run an FAL he's been working on for several years. 308 irons, 12ga pump and any 45acp. Doesn't get any more earthy than that. So grab that M1a, fish that 870 out from under the bed and clean up those 1911 mags. Come shoot the Noveski match and show us your HM side.

Due to the madness in the industry right now and thinking about shooters needing ammo to compete, I am working on a way for competitors to order ammo online and have it all shipped to CO for pick up before the match. We will have one load for 223 rifle and one load for 9mm pistol. Once I get the details finalized I will send the link to all registred competitors.

Note there is a limit on the amount you can order,500 per for 223 and 500 per for 9mm.

(good price for the ammo too).

This is getting close to being complete. But there will be a cut-off date. We are seeing an increase in the volume of registrations, we still have slots, but if you want in the on the ammo deal for the match, you probably only have a few weeks left to get your application to us.

Thanks FREEDOM MUNITIONS!!!

Have a few slots for ROs if you want to shoot Thursday and then work the match. Free match, free food, $100 cash for gas. Also need a few more set-up helpers on Wednesday, also gas reimbursement.

The ammo deal is done! Thanks to Jansen, James, Rudy, Hannah, Dan and Oscar of Freedom Munitions for their work in setting this up and working with the match to provide an ammo source for our competitors. I will be sending a message to registered competitors in a few minutes.

Not sure what MagPul will be doing at the match yet, but we appreciate their fight, products and support. By my math, Freedom is basically sponsoring every competitor who buys match ammo for more than the match entry fee. WOW!

If you have wanted to try 3Gun, this is a perfect opportunity, and one you should not pass up!!!

I got a few questions reagarding the ammo orders from Freedom which I will answer here...

The last day to order will be March 16.

If you no-show at the match, I will not ship the ammo to you as this is only for people who shoot the match. If that happens, we will figure out what to do, but i'd rather not be in that position for myself nor Freedom.

The two ammo types are it. They put in a lot of work on this so I am thankful that we have a solution for most competitors.

I was at Bass Protoday and they have PLENTY of birdshot on the shelves still. Buck and Slugs, not so much, so try to source those yourself in the next 5 weeks.

Are there enough people for a HM tactical division or just the standard He-man? (A scoped 308AR, 45ACP with 10 rounds and auto loader 12 guage will work for heavy tactical, right?)
Is the ammo still for sale? Some 308 and 45acp available?

The sessions are Thurs & Friday afternoon (shoot booth days) or Shoot Sat or Sunday? Do we express our preference on the application?

No entries in HM-Tactical so the division will not be recognized. Only .223 and 9mm is available (only 3 days left!). Open squads include Fri/Sat afternoon and all day Saturday. You self squad, so the sooner you get the app in, the better choice you have. No string pulling. :)

And then you would be be guilty of a crime under the current verbiage of the bill. You can not transfer a mag for use. Also, sponsors will pull support. There are venues in NM, WY, NE, KS where majors can be held without the risk.

This next Friday I fly home to CA to spend Easter w/ my folks, and I'm grabbing my M1A. I fly back with it on Tuesday. In Squad6, I compete on that Friday. Last time I shot my rifle, it was at 300m silhouettes at Angeles Range.

Since stage-matches don't start until 1pm on Friday, if I arrive early enough I should have enough time to zero on one of the other, non-berm ranges, right? (I am a member of CRC) I assume the Schuetzen range will also be "closed" as it's Stage 9 according to the email, so I think the Silhouette range should be appropriate?

I think I read somewhere that the targets would be at least 5moa, does that mean that the 200 yard targets are 10 inches? Just trying to figure out if I want to run an ACOG or just go with a red dot. It seems most shots are up close.

Hawk that you?- you help running the show?

(The enter key wouldn't work for line breaks until I put my explorer browser in compatibility mode? Haven't has issues like that since the web site re-launched in the new format.)

In general, I read thru the 3-gun USPSA rules and I didn't see anything about mag holders and such. I thought regular USPSA had restrictions on mag holder placement (distance from body?). Does any of that apply for this match or is it hang you reloads where you can? I'm going thru the stages trying to figure out if I have enough mag and shot shell holders.

MarkCO
03-27-2013, 16:40
There is no specific restriction on ammo carriers and such, just the guns.

Yes, 10" plates at 200 yards is the "smallest" target. Most of the stages will be pretty "busy" so a wide FOV is certainly going to be a good thing.

Friday, there will be some cool stuff at the range.

Pro Clinics by Colorado's own James Casanova of the Noveske Shooting Team will start at 9am. James won both his Division and the Team match at the first major of the year this past weekend. Shotgun loading, rifle hosing and stage breakdowns will the the three topics.

At 11am, there will be a suppressor demo by Alan of Machine Gun Tours.

At 1pm, the competition starts. Some of the top names in the game will be here to compete, probably for the last time in Colorado.

Non-competitors are more than welcome to come out, check out the vendors and demos and watch the stages. Eye and Ear protection is required and please check in at Stats to sign the waiver.

If you shoot sideways, on the ground, your gun and eyes will not like you, but it won't be necessary.

I'd bring boots, gloves, hats if you have them.

There are a few stage tweaks (not drawings, just words) and the final stage descriptions will be posted tonight.

Just FYI...If you bought ammo, you can check in at Stats for its location.

CASH only to buy meals, BUT, she won't be selling until after 7:20 in the morning and after 12:20 in the afternoon. Meal tickets, again pick up in stats, can be used about 6:50 and 11:50 for pre-bought meals.

Berm 7 will be available from about 10am until noon on Friday to check function and zeros. Noon on Friday, it will be designated a safe area. Berm 6 may be partially available thereafter, but is a sponsor berm so that will be left to those sponsors who set up in that berm.

Some answers to Questions...

The bottom slot on #5 is generous, but who knows if it will be beneficial to actually use it...

I was under the impression you had to use all the slots:

Upon start signal, engage PT1-14 with pistol only.
Abandon pistol on safe or empty in dump bucket. Retrieve
rifle and engage RT1-14 only through wall ports, no more
than 4 targets may be engaged through each port.

Mark, for those of us that were late to the party and too late to pick our own squads, is there a place we can find out which squad we're assigned to?
Thanks!

Got to give a shout out to the sponsors and support one last time before the match...

First, Noveske for being the title sponsor and for providing support, prizes and encouragment. If my name were Denise, I would have tears on my Keyboard. If you don't know about John Novekse and his legacy, go find out...it is inspiring! Everyone associated with Noveske should be thanked many times over. If you like the match, let Jansen, Rob and James know and we will explore options for another venue if we can't get the legal issues resolved for a 2014 match in Colorado.

Next to our stage sponsors:

MagPul just overnighted over $4k in prizes to the shop. They will have a shooter at the match, so please take the opportunity to thank him for his companies work on the legislative front and for the match sponsorship.

Freedom Munitions for the ammo purchase deal, the prizes and the pallet of water for you all to drink at the match. Again, they should be at the match, so thank them in person.

Center of Mass, for their prize donation and the RO gifts. Another shooter to thank in person.

Blade-Tech also kicked in a huge amount of product for the match.

Brownells, Burris, DPMS, Hornady, Shooters Source, SigSauer, Stag and Warne were also generous with their donations.

Thanks also to all of these prize donors for the match:

Atlanta Arms and Ammo, Berger, BoomerShooter.com, CarbonArms, Combat Applications Tools, CED, Comp-Tac, Decot, HiViz, Hogue, J Dewey, LaserLyte, LET Targets, Leupold, MachineGunTours, MGM Targets, Nighthawk Custom, Militec, NAA, Ranier, Redding, RM Targets, Shilen, Sierra, Tifosi, UniqueTek, Wilson Combat, Zero, Volquartsen.

We had a few sponsors bow out of sponsorship this year because their $ went to 3GN instead of smaller matches. We also had a few that just could not come up with product and meet their obligations to customers with orders. For the most part, the sponsors you see listed above made an extra effort to provide product and support this match, so they deserve your patronage more than ever.

I also had several match staff (and competitors) that bowed out due to ammo shortages, funds, deployments and other issues. We wish them all the best, but make sure to doubly thank your match staff for their hard work. We have several staff that are working the match and not even shooting!

Thanks to Dawn for the food she is going to be preparing to keep you all going.

Thanks to USPSA, especially Endersby for the encouragement and work on our sport, McManus for the stage reviews, and Amidon for keeping track of us all. Thanks to Westcott for getting all the prizes for the prize table!

Last, but probably most deserving of thanks, James Casanova. Yeah, James is a close friend, but his dedication to the sport is exemplary. Not just a Championship winning shooter, but an example of giving back to the sport at every turn. He runs local matches, helps out shooters with guns and gear issues and more. He is putting on a free Pro-Clinic, built walls, hauled stuff to the range, got my stage drawings produced and generally helped keep me from totally freaking out. Some lucky shooter is also going to end up with a great prize table walk from James!

See you on the range! Spectators welcome...however appropriate attire required by USPSA rule, and we will have Media pressence.

I don't know the official answer but since the staff is shooting today, I suspect getting an answer might not happen. I'm poor so I built my own caddies out of Kydex. I saw that stage and built another 6 round holder. I hope I don't miss to much or I plan on digging rounds out of my pocket.
Since I'm in squad 8, I'll shoot that first. If someone wants to borrow a caddy, I'm happy to loan one out (cost more in time to make them than actual cash so if it walks away, it is what it is).

Some kind of gas issue. It choked hard on the rifle only stage (12 FTE for this idiot. I kept trying to get the gun up instead of just moving on and shooting (at) the rest of the targets with the rifle in single shot mode.. [facepalm]). As near as I can guess the H2 buffer in it is too heavy to use with the gas system on suppressed (bolt doesn't fully cycle so it fails to pick up the top round in the magazine) and too light to use with the gas system open (cycles too fast and causes failures to eject with the spent brass wedged above the new round trying to get into the chamber). That's just a theory though, I haven't had it back out to the range to try and diagnose the issue.

I got lots of immediate and remedial action practice on a couple of stages before I swallowed my pride and accepted Kestelbike's generous offer to alternate with his rifle for the rest of the match. Very frustrating.

On the up side, I didn't pitch my rifle down range in disgust. Which I consider a personal win.

My second 3G competition ever so be kind. (I shot my first pistol IPSC/USPSA pistol on the previous Monday). There was a large learning curve but had a blast!

http://vimeo.com/63646242

Couple of notes to answer any questions: I’m still pretty new to rapid shooting a rifle at the 35-50 yard range so I hedged my bets with triple tapping some of them on purpose. I did better than I figured so I won’t be doing that in the future. My plan for stage 9 was two shots per target and move. I didn’t want to get bothered sitting there forever with a 1x optic with a 4MOA hoping for the best. Some jerking of the pistol so I’ll have to work on that a lot (but I’ve only had it for about 4 weeks).
I took pictures of various parts of the stage with my iPhone so I’ll incorporate those into a longer video. It was shot in 1080p on a ContourGPS.
I ran a 16-inch mid-length with an Aimpoint M2, new Springfield 5.25 9mm, and a used Mossy 930 SPX that was converted for 3G (welded lifter, XS sights, mag extension) and all homemade kydex holsters/caddies.

Mark and James put on a great intro to 3G course which made all the difference between having a blast and being frustrated. http://www.ar-15.co/threads/71443-Intro-to-3Gun
Had to miss the awards due to: http://www.ar-15.co/threads/97449-Recall-John-Morse (wish us luck)
The pros were really impressive, ROs were great help to a newbie, and it was great that Freedom helped with ammo.
Lastly, Mark did a great job! Hope to do it again a year from now.
Now I gotta soak my feet.
(ok, I have a thick skin so any recommendations/tips/pointers are welcomed!)

Edit: Added still pics of the stages (minus one)

Brandon, couple of little comments per stage.

Stage 1. At the start, you are low ready, so shoot the low target first. Saves about a second. A little hesitant on the pistol, try to figure the best flwo and slow down enough to flow smooth.

Stage 2. At the start, you should again be looking AT the target you want to shoot first. The left two targets ar what keep you pinned at the start, so shoot those first then move on the ones on the right. On the shotgun, just start on the steel array and then move while loading for the rest which are the clays. Saves a long transition.

Stage 4. Start with pistol, otherwise you are doing a standing draw and it costs and extra second.

Stage 5. Start on the second target in so you can start to leave sooner. Then the further right targets followed by the ground target. On the first 2, and the 2 gorund targets, depending on mag capacity, you can get away with slowing down a tad and shooiting 1A, then 1A on the head behind the black hardcover. This saves you a reload and avoids the potential of a 180 issue on the reload. Overall, it would have saved you over a second. On the rifle, you only needed the left and right ports, which wold have saved you about 3 seconds.

Stage 6, there were a LOT of options, but, you had a wasted transtion when you went from the first steel to the first paper array. If you dropped the tripples, you would have been a few seconds faster to shoot all paper with the rifle, the left and right steelarrays with pistol and the cetner steel with shotgun.

Stage 7. Look at the first target before the beep. On the left, take only the tight inside paper and step immediately to the right to shoot the poppers and paper through the right opening. From the front, shoot the other paper and popper on the left. Saves over 2 seconds. Shoot all the steel with pistol saves the standing reload (and 4 or 5 seconds) at the first openiing to the right.

Stage 8. Shooting the slugs first or last eliminates the DQ potential. Taking the 2 clays on the windmill before ti is activated is actually slower than shooting the activators and then letting the windmill rotate to POA while pulloing the trigger. Also, seated was faster by 3 to 4 seconds.

Stage 9. You went to the sweet spot, but then left a paper for later, costing at least 2 seconds. Shooitng with a prop on the right of the ejection port can some issues.

Glad you enjoyed the match!

On the stage where we had to shoot thru the single port at the clay-oreos, how was the gun set up then? I was just going over the pics and it seems that the brass is moving really slow compared to other rifles I've looked at (albeit most of those were 223 rifles). Your brass is moving about 1/3 or less the speed of other ones I've looked at so far. Just a first look, if I notice anything else I'll pass it along.

FromMyColdDeadHands,

Thanks for the pictures. This is a good one of my OBR testing my patience. I'll have to get things sorted before the Lake George match at the end of the month. [Beer]

Not a problem. Check the link to the Photobucket page, there are some more pics. You OBR seems to be ejecting brass at the low end of the variation of the ARs I've watched, but some are close. I still haven't gotten a chance to run my Noveske Upper, I'll tear it down probably tonight.

I think these matches are a get opportunity for people to bring out their 1/2 MOA-never jams rifles and just see how fast stuff goes sideways!!

Yeah it's funny what can happen when you actually run a gun a bit instead of plinking off a bench. ;)

You know I was thinking about it and the last time I had that OBR out for any real shooting, it was still wearing a rifle length receiver extension (same setup it had at the Magpul Precision Rifle course). I've got some different buffers and springs on order to play around with but worst case scenario, I'll just go back to a fixed stock on that rifle.

FMCDHand, no worries at all! FromK is awesome and came along to support & coach, and took video of my day2 stages (so I can see just how turtle-slow I am). you got 2 AMAZING shots of NickS with the muzzle-shot and the 2 brass flying out.

Lake George April is going to be damn fun, if it's set to go.

I also really enjoyed talking w/ -DJ- who has given me some good ideas for next match. (I still gotta buy Enos' book!)

If you are going to buy a book, get the trifecta...

With Winning in Mind, Enos' Book and Seeklanders Book. Read them once a year for four or five years...Seriously!

Yep. For trainers, I also suggest this one: http://www.amazon.com/The-Talent-Code-Greatness-Grown/dp/055380684X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365616878&sr=8-1&keywords=Talent+Code

Cool, got WWiM and Enos. Thanks for the suggestions! (I will have to check out Seeklander's a bit later)

<off topic degree="completely, totally, inexcusably">

I have a pile of books on my reading list; the four MarkCO suggested are woven in with biography, some rather esoteric mathematics, etc. I'm wrapping up Brandon Webb's "The Red Circle" tonight, and toward the end, when he is discussing his work with sniper training, he went to some length discussing Mental Management. For some reason the names didn't click until he mentioned Lanny Bassham's book "With Winning in Mind", which DID click and was sitting less than a foot away on my desk. That one just gravitated to third on my pile (there's a math book between Mr. Webb and Mr. Bassham, though I may be interleaving those two for technical reasons). Math is production, the mental, motivational, and leadership material is directional, shooting is recreational. All of it ties together. Thanks for the recommendation, Mark!
