View Full Version : lets hear some vermin spots
anyone have decent spots for prarrie dogs, rabbits, or even coyotes.
I had a trip planned for Weld county and i think that got put on hold so I am looking for another spot. would like to find a local spot. Alot of dogs between pueblo and canon but I have no idea who owns that land.
I think guys will generally guard "their" spots unfortunately.
you basically have to get out there and start knocking on doors of people with p dog problems. One day this summer I knocked on 7 farm house doors and scored 2 solid spots to shot all the p doggies I want. I just walked up and said hey and that I noticed you had quite a few p dogs and could I please help you out. 5 said no and 2 said yes! one yes was plenty.
One spot I can turn you on to up in Wyoming though is the shirley basin area just north of medicine bow (the town). Its all BLM, so bring your 4x4. Its a long drive but as the ranger told me "you can melt out a couple barrels up there if thats what you want to do..." and he was spot on! there is so much $hit to shoot up there and all you need is a hunters saftey card....no small game tag required...epic spot...make a weekend trip out of it...you can free camp on the BLM land or head back to medicine bow to one of the little motels there.
I'm new to Co. Where are some good places to look for farms with pest problems?

Free Prairie Dogs ....
I saw a sign like this on State land just across the Nebraska border years ago. lol
You can get there in 3 hours. If that sign was in (Boulder), [Flower] Colorado "Peta" would have a fit! Probably have news crews, helicopters, and protesters swarming the place.

I know it's a little bit of a drive, but once you get out around Limon they are begging for people to shoot them.
Coyotes too.
The closer you get to Kansas, the more willing people are to let you hunt their property.
A bonus, once you get to know these people, most will also let you hunt their "prairie maggots" as they call them.(Antelope)
If you get a yes from somebody don't forget to ask if they know of anybody else that has a problem that they would like help with and they will usually tell you the next person to contact....so the door knocking ends.
I usually go out to Seibert and Flagler, just south of I-70.
Stopping at the little towns and going to local businesses like the Co-op usually works as well, since everybody knows everybody and knows where the problem areas are.
Some of the "problem" areas are miles wide and miles long.
Thank you very much, sir. I don't mind driving to Kansas or Wyoming. Limon os nothing. I'd be glad to make the trip. Thank you for the advice.

Coyote and dog rats, goto LasAnimas or east of LaJunta. The cattle farmers down their will be glad to let you have at it. East on Hwy. 50
This may be a stupid question, but I've never tried p-dog sniping. Is a scoped .22 rifle adequate for this? Or do you really need a faster, flatter shooting varmint rifle? I'd love to do some rat shooting, but I don't really want to buy a special gun for it. Might be fun with my Mosin though....
Hello? Same question about using a .22, thanks!
I know people that shoot 50 bmg. They take mile long shots. A 22 will get you 100 yrd shoots. It's just what do you like. A (close)friend of mine is DEADLY WITH A SLING SHOT.P-dog drops over dead.[ROFL1] I like the 223 w a 55gr v-max because they explode.[Help][ROFL1]
Thanks! The reason I ask is because...
#1 - I don't really want to buy a new rifle just for this.
#2 - I have an old Remington 514 single shot .22 with a large cheapo scope on it that's just deadly accurate. I can hit bottle caps all day long at 50 yards with it, and shoot the center out of targets easily. It'll make quarter-sized groups with no problem.
#3 - The grandson has a Ruger 10/22 with a scope also.
I just didn't know what kind of distances you typically have to hunt pasture poodles at, and I didn't know if regular .22 rounds are fast enough to hit the rats before they duck back into their holes.
I do have a Mosin Nagant 91/30 that would probably make a good mist out of 'em too, but I haven't got a chance to even shoot it yet, so I don't know how it would do. Have a couple of Colt 1911's that are pretty dang accurate too, that would be a good challenge out to 50 yards or so.
Reckon I need to do some door-knockin' to find a place.

As others have said you can get by with anything. I've used my .22 rifles for in close with a max range of about 100-150 yds. When it gets longer than that, I revert to my .22-250. I've taken them out past 450 yds with it. They don't hear the shots coming before the bullet gets there with either rifle. And when I'm shooting out past 400 yds they don't see you either so if you miss and just kick up dirt around them, they don't tend to permanently spook. They'll go down their hole and pop right back up within a minute or so.
.22 lr works great and its cheap all day long
problem is the little doggies almost always crawl back into their holes after being shot with only a .22lr so no real glory and a slow death
.17 HMR works pretty good sometimes they still manage to make it back down under though
.223 SP and some HP with blow them up under 100 yds and flip'em if you hit'em right at further distances
.22-250 is what the video guys use and those are so amped up it explodes them pretty good

Well, I have 600 rounds of 7.62x54R Bulgarian heavy ball for the Mosin, that oughta pop 'em like water balloons! http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b150/rinselman/smilies/anim_m91-30.gif I'm dying to shoot it, I don't know if it's accurate or lucky to hit a Volkswagen with yet. It's just that with my .22, I could make head shots all day long.
the mosin is supposed to kick like a mule
have fun with that one

Can't be any worse than an '06 or a .308, or any other big .30 cal. or larger. I'm sure it WILL be fun!
A gentleman never kills and tells.
Go with the .22! I shoot them behind my house quite a bit with my scoped 10/22 and a old remington .22 i've got.
I like trying 250-300 yard shots with them!!!
I've shot them at 300 yards as well as 10-15 yards and it doesn't seem to matter as the .22 doesn't do ultimate damage unless its a head or neck shot.
The worst is if you hit them in the back and it paralyzes them except for their front legs.... Makes you take a second more to make a bit more accurate head shot.

Where do ya live? I'd be happy to help clear 'em out! [Tooth]
