I've got a Bulgarian AK-74 with the 'plastic' furniture. I'd really like to add a folding stock to it...

I don't know a lot about 922r stuff, but aren't there some rules to be followed in order to add a folder stock?

How would I go about adding a folding stock?

Thanks.

What kind of folding stock? Like a triangle or AK-100 series stock? Or a Tantal or tacticool?

I would talk to Bert at BPTacitcAl. If you want to get real fancy contact Jim Fuller @ Rifle Dynamics.

Any kind really: triangle, Tantal wire folder, or something like this ATI: ATI AK Folding Stock (http://store.carolinashooterssupply.com/servlet/-strse-1233/ATI-Stikeforce-stock-AKA3600/Detail)

Probably in order of preference would be triangle, something like the ATI and then lastly, the wire, Tantal-style.

A tantal wire folder will not work with a forked ak74 rear trunnion it needs a solid akm trunnion but a Romanian or east German folder will work, or you could remove the rear trunnion and cut the right holes and drill the extra rivet holes to rivet in a left side folding stock (Russian and bulgy style) also you could use an ace folding stock

Now did your Bulgy come with U.S. furniture?Or does it still have the arsenal stockset?
If it came imported with the original stockset-mind you as a whole gun not a parts kit-then It would be safe to say you can put on a Bulgy sidefolder or any other folder.
FYI the rivit pattern for the Bulgy sidefolder trunnion is the same as the fixed stock.

If however it came with a U.S. stock then technicly you need to put a U.S. made one back on.
I think KVAR has a U.S. sidefolder that just slips in like a regular stock.

If you want to keep it simple and not have to change the trunnion you need one of these
http://riflestocks.com/store/product63.html

Or these depending what the trunnion is. This one requires cutting the top tang off

If it is the top one touch bases with me, i have one somewhere in a parts bin.

Going with an Ace stock or one of the other mfg keeps you 922 compliant. If going with a com-bloc stock, you will need to add 1 more us mfg item. say flash hider, gas piston pistol grip. Something cost efficient to avoid running a nice outsourcing of your money.

Those are cool! They look like the 'originals' that the ATI stocks are imitating.

I'm not 100% certain what's on my Bulgys, they're Century built imports, I think. I'll have to snap a few pics...

Those century 74's are bulgy kits with us barrels built on nodaks, they sold for 400$ and were put on sale for 360$ they were a good buy when they were around.

The ati stocks are FAL para style which is exactly what the galil stocks are as well, the ones in the link I posted are the brand new poly coated israeli galil stocks and then I course the galil folder with an ar stock adaptor

Those are nice, I have a template to mod the receiver for a bulgy left side folder and AK-builder has a very nice reproduction of the bulgy side folder trunnion, stock and hardware for a very reasonable price

Polish is my specialty ;)

FYI -you might have to re do the plastic on the arms, and the butpads might be a bit beat up but they were issued items. Not raly a big dael to fix unless the butpads are compleatly whipped. You could always ask for a good condition one and ask if your not satisfied with it can you send it back.

The ones from Poland,of course would be harder to ship back but from what I hear their in realitively good condition.Just the arms need re doing.

I talked to KVAR about adding the side folder to an Arsenal a while back and they sated that it needed some light machining to fit.

Piece of cake!
You probably just have to sand/file down the sides a bit to get a nice snug fit.You want to be able to tap it in lightly with a hammer to get it to go in,but not where you realy have to muscle it in.Too loose and it wobbles

That bulgy 74 looks good with a beryl stock, bob, you still need to build your polish under folder 74 ;)

That will probably be one of my winter projects Justin.
I have to bird dog the parts first which in actuality for me is the most fun ;)
